I also prefer sweet potato pie to pumpkin, but the potatoes need to be well boiled and then beat with an electric mixer to make sure they aren't stringy--also use sweet potatoes rather than yams. I have the recipe used by the pastry cook in the AR governor's mansion for years until she retired. It was Bill Clinton's favorite dessert.
Alas, I've switched to the Mediterranean diet and there are very few dessert options. I have not been able to give up dark chocolate yet and probably won't. A body needs chocolate every now and then. But, no pie.
