2019-20 Canadian ladies news and updates

Aurora Cotop is off the list for Warsaw Cup :( A shame her first full season on the senior circuit has been delayed.

This is an exciting week for the Canadian ladies though, with Dawson and Long skating senior at the Volvo Cup in Latvia, looking for those TES minimums (Long has the worlds TES minimum in the free only and neither minimum for the short; Dawson has the 4CC minimum in the short and neither for the free).

Also a possible Youth Olympic spot could be on the line for the juniors in Latvia with Schizas and Carle (Schizas will also be looking for junior worlds TES minimums; Carle already has hers from last season).

Good luck to everyone!

Also I was just thinking about how many Canadian women have skated internationally this season. Of course there's still the Challenge to come, so we don't know the field for Nationals yet - but it seems likely that most of the senior field will have international experience at the junior or senior level in this or previous seasons. Daleman, Cotop, Mallet, Pineault, Dawson, Long, Schumacher, Bausback, Gran, Orzel, Shizas, Bulawka all competed internationally this season or last season. Possible qualifiers with previous international experience include Tamura, Decelles, and Deguise Léveillée (I hope I didn't miss anyone). If they all qualify to Nationals, that's 15 out of 18!

Michelle Long posted an instgram story of her last training before the Volvo Cup - a nice double axel triple toe. Her instagram handle is themichellelong

Yes, there’s no difference between JGP eligibility and JW eligibility.

She is not, however, eligible for the Youth Olympics this year; because of the YOG age rules, she is ironically eligible to go to the real Olympics before the Youth Olympics.

That does seem ironic. What's the cutoff age for the Youth Olympics? 14? I look forward to seeing her develop.

Bummer about Cotop. I hope she will be okay for Canadians.

Yes, the Youth Olympics have a hard age cutoff at 14. The interaction of that with the ISU's junior eligibility means that people like Kaiya who are born too close to the minimum age of junior eligibility can't go to the YOG.

The American junior pair of Martins/Bedard similarly can't go because Martins is too young, even though they competed on the JGP.

Catherine Carle and Madeline Schizas skated very well in the short program in Latvia, sitting in third and fourth. The scores are very close - 57.60 and 56.45. Carle was very clean and Schizas had a turn between her jump combo, but had higher PCS.

I rewound the live stream to watch it so catch it while you can: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbAeQEFryrE (Carle skated in the first group and Schizas in the fifth).

Kaiya is adorable. I would love to see her skate to the Little Women soundtrack next season... or I've always wanted someone to skate to the music from the Kevin Sullivan Anne of Green Gables miniseries, which had a beautiful soundtrack by composer Hagood Hardy.

Aaaahhh! I've always loved the soundtrack of AOGG from Hagood Hardy and hoped someone would pick this whenever worlds was in Canada. It could also be a good piece for the quiet middle portion of a program before the big finale. It has a Somewhere in Time quality to it. It would also be great for an ice dance team.

Are you listening David Wilson? Marie-France Dubreuil? Lori Nichol? Lance Vipond?

I’d love that too!!! 25+ years of watching skating and still waiting...

(((Gabby))) :(

Carle and Schizas ended up fourth and fifth in Riga. Carle attempted 7 triples but unfortunately had a turn between her 3toe 3toe attempt and lost credit for the second one, which was very costly. She fell on a double axel late in the program, but came back with a nice 3sal-euler-2sal combo. Schizas had a couple of falls but landed a nice triple flip at the beginning and came with a good three jump combo late in the program.

Both scored significantly higher than the other YOG eligible Canadians who were on the JGP this year, so hopefully Carle will get the nomination.

And Schizas got the jr worlds TES minimums in both programs (Carle already had them from last season), so that adds to the depth of skaters to choose from for the junior worlds spots.

And I managed to see Dawson's skate from Latvia on the stream just now. Triple toe no combo, triple lutz fall no combo :( So no worlds TES minimums. She still got the 4CC minimum (which she already had from SLC). Hopefully she'll get the 4CC minimum in the free. And good luck to Long who skates later.

Dawson: 3t, 3ze-fall-no combo
Long: 3s, 2a, 3lo-fall-no combo
Dawson ended up 18th, Long 21st

4 Catherine CARLE CAN 153.83 3 5 (96.23 FS 47.13/50.10 -1)
5 Madeline SCHIZAS CAN 150.71 4 8 (94.26 FS 44.86/51.40 -2)

Schizas landed her final 3 jumps well (3T, 3S+2T, 2A+2T+2Lo) had the 4th highest PCS in the FS, which I was glad to see. Was the female cover of "The Sound of Silence" a new program for Madeline? I recall her skating to Miss Saigon earlier this season.

Carle landed 6 of her 7 planned triples cleanly (including 3Lz; 3F was called<) in her Samson and Delilah FS but only got credit for 5, as explained by @danafan above. She had a nosebleed as she was getting off the ice.
And Schizas got the jr worlds TES minimums in both programs (Carle already had them from last season), so that adds to the depth of skaters to choose from for the junior worlds spots.
:)

We have a legit horse race in juniors to see who goes with Ruiter to world's

Seniors? Basically anyone left standing with minimums will probably be put on a plane (or in a cab depending on where she lives). Bleh.

It seems like we have some promising juniors. And we're all in love with Kaiya.

I miss Alaine. It's strange not having her on the scene. The second spot is anyone's guess. As long as Gabby's healthy enough, she will go to Worlds.

Here's hoping Bausback and Schumacher get their worlds TES minimums in Poland next week. Of the active skaters we only have four eligible, and one hasn't skated internationally yet this season due to injury.

Long must be so disappointed after today :( It should have been easy for her to at least get the 4CC minimum.

Based on TES minimums, these are the skaters eligible for junior worlds: Bausback, Blanchard, Bulawka, Carle, Cotop, Dawson, Gran, Orzel, Ruiter, Schizas, Schumacher.

I don't recall that many eligible skaters since the TES minimums were introduced! Of those, only Ruiter and Carle are skating junior domestically.

Update to include senior ladies from BC sectionals and Jr ladies from Volvo.

Kinda funny/sad that from the local list, 1st place is too young and most of places 2-5 are either injured (Cotop) or got no senior intl assignments (Decelles & Bulawka). Only Bausback is finally getting a senior intl in a week or so.
