2019-20 Canadian ladies news and updates

Just 2.5 seasons ago there were 2 world medalists in the ladies and right now their best scoring lady is Veronik who is just recovering from injury and has no lutz and above.

I like her skating, I really do. But I am still hoping Alaine and Gabby get themselves together. Given technical advancement, I am guessing even their best from 2 / 3 seasons is barely enough for top ten this season.

I don't have any reason to think Gabrielle won't keep improving.

Alaine has retired. And I don't see her as being a factor if she was competing. She's been on a downward trend for a while. It's early in the season. I'm sure Gabrielle will keep improving. Canada is on a rebuilding phase. All of our big stars save for Gabby have retired.

I'm glad that Veronik skated well at Skate America and now has another event. But if you were a betting person on her at SA, they wouldn't have even listed her in the sportsbook her practices were so bad. All doubles for the most part. Lots of coach chat and skating around the edges. Seriously, her practices were nothing like her competition and I was overjoyed that she came out with good programs. In retrospect, if she was still on the recovery from injury that would explain her practices, lets hope that she has two solid programs again and fingers crossed for a good short today.

The landscape in all disciplines changes quickly. Canada wouldn't have predicted 2 ladies world medals coming out of the 2015-2016 season. There is some real talent coming - how quickly it arrives depends on their development.

I can't get excited about Mallet. In the least. She doesn't look well trained and her TES would only put her in position to win the Canadian Nationals in 1998. Should we ever decide to hold that event again, I'll back her to the max. Otherwise, I'll mostly be focused on Gabby until Aurora and some of the others are cooked and ready.

Pineault skated really well too (clean triple triple, but under rotated on the loop). A huge step up from her summer competitions for sure. Mallet was not as good as Skate America.

Hasn't Daleman only been cleared to train for a few weeks now? All things considered I think she's on the right track. I think her free skate, if performed to potential, is going to be spectacular.

What happened to Gabby? Can't she catch a break? :(
Nothing happened that we didn’t already know about.

Short program was a big improvement in just a few weeks (though she should immediately go back to her previous costume). Free skate was also an improvement, though a long, long way from her best, and she’s clearly still in the process of regaining stamina.

Not a great day for the Canadian ladies...still I was heartened by the overall quality of Gabby's program (I hadn't seen it before). Lots of time left in the season and I think if the pieces come together she has a lot of potential.

Veronik definitely didn't skate as well as she did last week, but Alicia's free was her best in quite a while.

I'm looking forward to seeing more Canadian women get their TES minimums at upcoming events. And hopefully Cotop will be ready to go in Poland next month. It would be great if Cotop, Schumacher, and Bausback could put up a season best score that would get them picked for a grand prix next season - it won't be easy, but something to aspire to.

Overall, Gabby's performance was definitely better than Finlandia. Another stepping stone for her.
For sure....it takes time to rebuild, both on and off the ice. She got her triple toe triple toe back and that was her big money move. I don't know quality wise how close it was to before(just because my knowledge of jumps is zilch) but she did them and they were clean and I think at Finlandia in the short she might have done doubles.

If Gabby regains her form in time, then great. If not, she should take her time. The short program performance gave me hope and put a smile on my face. The free, not so much yet, but as much as I find that Celine Dion song dated, I can't help but feel Gabby must be very inspired by it to push herself on. She used to be so good and it's ALL COMING BACK TO HER NOW. If she paces herself right, she can create a huge moment at Nationals.

She stepped out of the second triple toe, but it was pretty close. She kept fighting and kept up her energy despite the mistakes. She will keep improving and she tends to peak later in the season. Comebacks take time. I'm just glad she's in a good place this season after what she went through last year. That's what matters.

I was so relieved to see Gabby smiling after her free skate. It wasn't a great skate but it was pretty good for her, all things considered. A couple of years ago a performance like that would have been devastating. To see her smiling was wonderful.

I believe in the long she landed a clean lutz which I didn't see her hit in practice so that is also a positive sign.

That is so true. She was devastated when she finished fifth at Nationals last year. Sometimes, going through trials and difficulties can put things in perspective. I think that's the case with Gabby. Ands hard on herself will help her mentally and help with her skating.

Gabby has withdrawn from Cup of China. I'm not surprised: although she was smiling and bubbly in the KnC at SC, her coach looked worried. If her skating didn't improve drastically over her SC performances, she couldn't expect the generous scores she received on home ice, and that wouldn't be good for her emotional recovery.

Kaiya won Alberta Sectionals (by a lot). Notably, she's now doing two Lutzes in her free skate, and landed both of them, including one in combination with a 3T. The solo Lutz got a !, the ones in combination there and in the short (the one she fell on) didn't.

The impression I got is that Ruiter is a natural flip girl, not a Lutz girl, so it's interesting that her coaches are evidently going all-in on making the jump work for her. With some success.

Wow, she nailed a 7 triples LP. Great for her!
