Why are we assuming it’s fan voting? Most sports awards are determined by an organization like the associated press. NFL’s MVP is determined by a group of sports writers, for example.

Not sure it will be translated and posted here on the forum later, but I guess Google Translate will do a decent job with it.

Yes. What did you think all the social media posts are for?

I get your drift. ;) But let's be honest that some social media posts are for want of a better description, somewhat 'ill-advised.' Most posts by skating athletes are seemingly to document their busy lives and to communicate with family, friends and peers, while certain posts are intended by skaters to promote their own careers rather than doing the job feds and ISU should actually be doing for the sport as a whole, but tend to neglect or suck at.

Are you really sure about this (insert thinking emoticon)?

Yeah, I'm quite sure, but then again, I'm not voting. And btw, I sincerely doubt that busy Yalie & World champion, Olympic medalist Nathan Chen gives two fcuks one way or the other. Epically cool Nathan politely minds his own business and takes care of bizness :kickass: without worrying about shizz (trivial or otherwise) that he has no control over. :D

 Press coverage of figure skating has always been dreadful, even by some of the most knowledgeable press-related sports journos involved in surfacely scrutinizing fs. Coverage has evolved and become a bit better in recent years largely because of Internet and social media technologies, and because it's fs fans who are providing other fans with the best coverage available -- thanks @Sylvia, @clairecloutier, @icedance.com, @TwoForTheIce, @TheFinerSports, @InTheLoop, @EuropeOnIce, @IFS.com, @FigureSkatersOnline, @JackieWong, @P.J.Kwong, and formerly @manleywoman, et al.

Most conventional sports press don't understand a dang thang about the world of fs and should not be involved. Good old Phil Hersh, Christine Brennan, Kirk Wessler, and a handful of other actual sports journalists who do know skating athletes and who understand the jumps, the terminology and the judging system politics are few and far between. Thus, no conventional associated press are even capable of voting. They don't even know who most of the skaters are, much less the difference between the disciplines. Altho' whatever, let the clusterfcuk happen every which way but loose, eh. :40beers:

Wowza granny, figure skating has now got it's own Academy Awards popularity f'ing contest! :COP: :watch:

And another thingy: Adam Rippon for U.S. President!!! :soapbox: :cheer2: :encore: :swoon: Buttigieg can be Adam's VP! Rippon/Buttigieg FTW!!!

I can’t wait for all the future cray cray costumes and choreography that’ll mainly be geared toward the awards :watch:

Adam Rippon and Mirai Nagasu have already nailed the Red Carpet fashion awards:

Not to mention Johnny and Tara before them:

Along with Ash Wagner and Adam (before the world really knew the wonderfulness that is AdaRipp):

James/Cipres look fine at a previous skating gala that was a low key, non-publicized event:

As do Ashley Cain (Gribble) & Timothy LeDuc, competing for 'Who Wore It Better?' dibs

True. Theoretically ISU could create its own voting association comprised of more than just journalists. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is comprised of members from a wide variety of disciplines within the motion picture industry.

They explicitly note that the media and ISU members are invited to vote; perhaps they'll apply a weight method such that those members' votes are more influential than votes from the general public?

Or they could choose whoever they want to win and "adjust" the vote weightings accordingly :EVILLE:

Someone had an extra shot of espresso this morning.

Tee hee, I know it's the wrong thread, but it just feels right to promote that bit of ridiculously lovely and wonderful flight of fancy here. And sadly, unfortunately, my tummy can no longer tolerate coffee. :wuzrobbed

Welcome to the wacko world that's happening right before our eyes, figure skating included. Maybe this new ISU Awards gala should be promoted as: Figure Skating's Grab for Worldwide Uber Fandom! What else was the Vegas SA locale about than a push for more relevance in the age of Youtube, Kardashians, and Award show extravaganzas?!

I mean AdaRipp already has been showing the figure skating world how it's possible to actually be relevant and popular, without any help from figure skating PTB. And figure skating PTB are clapping themselves in the head for not realizing Adam's star power all along. USFS was ready to relegate Adam to the scrap heap at 2015 U.S. Nationals. But AdaRipp said, 'Nope PTB, not so freakin' fast. I control my own fabulous destiny!' Attaboy, AdaRipp! :cheer2:

I think they said only the lifetime achievement award winner wouldn't be by public voting but a panel.

If a stern coach ...forces them to practice and skate while injured ...but those kids ultimately won the championships, does the coach then become best coach?
If you're Tom Zakrajsek, and you're chosen as PSA Coach of the Year and nominated again two years later.

But they already did it for Team Challenge Cup and probably thought it was fair and correct

All I remember is that fans selected people that were more well known, and the Russian Fed calmly replaced Kovtun with Kolyada anyway. (Which didn't help as Kolyada didn't skate well & I believe had new skates). There was a lot of griping that fans of other teams had purposely selected certain athletes to make the opposing teams less competitive. I think, though, they just selected athletes that had been around longer.

Popularity contests are popularity contests.

One big question: if this thing flops, they will eliminate it just like they did to that challenge cup several years ago, right?

If this goes on for a few years or forever more, I think the best thing is if/when the Most Entertaining Program, which “[h]onors the Single Skater or Pair or Ice Dance Couple for the music selection, expression, creativity, contemporary implementation, originality and overall performance” will be one which does not have the highest PCS marks or even close to having the highest PCS marks in the Choreography/performance/interpretation categories, losing out to a skater with much higher TES in actual competition. Maybe this award will make the judges rethink that skater for the following season.

I’m most looking forward to these categories:

Best Costume - men, ladies, Pairs, dance and Coach in Kiss n Cry

Best Music (a way to bring the pop music industry into the mix)

Most Improved Skater Trophy

Best Performance by a first-time country competing at a Worlds

Imagine the possibilities!
