Long time lurker here. Very rare poster.

I’ve read through this whole thread and unless I overlooked it, I didn’t see any suggestions of other hotels that are close by.

MGM Grand (StayWell rooms won't have a hint of smoke), Park MGM or NYNY are your best bets. That part of The Strip is a 5-minute car ride away from the arena ($7 Uber/Lyft ride, each way).

I’ve been reading reviews for the Orleans Hotel along with comments here and I’ve concluded that it’s not worth the risk of hoping that I get a room that doesn’t smell like smoke. It’s a shame because the hotel has wonderful reviews as a whole, but I react horribly to even a slight cigarette smoke smell (I can handle walking through it, but sleeping in a room that smells like smoke is going to be a problem.) So I think I’ll be cancelling my reservation there. Does anyone have any recommendations of a hotel to stay at that’s close to the arena? I don’t need fancy, but I also don’t need cheap (though cheap would be great). Just something reasonably priced that is unlikely to smell like smoke. I’ve read through this whole thread and unless I overlooked it, I didn’t see any suggestions of other hotels that are close by. I’ve found a few online, but I think they might be timeshares and not hotels? (Tahiti, Desert Paradise, etc) Does anyone have any experience or information about these places? We’ll have a car, but it would be nice to be able to walk to the arena.

No recommendations, but the last I looked, the Orleans was already sold out. They were directing people to another place but it didn’t look that great.

Looks like I won't be working that weekend! I'll have to get my final schedule to figure out when I can travel, but hopefully I'll get to see all the events. :)

I just changed my Fall plans around and cancelled my hotel room at the Platinum Hotel, which advertises as a smoke-free hotel. I have no idea how convenient it is -- I assumed I'd take Uber or a taxi to and fro.

I just canceled my reservation (Oct 17-21) at The Orleans, so if you need a room, move quickly. I decided to go to SLC instead. I wish I could do both events but it's not possible. Have a great time, everyone! I think I'll see some of you in Greensboro?

Don’t trust the MGM. Those rooms may smell like smoke.

If you make sure you're not in the West Wing, you're fine. And if you opt for the StayWell category, that's not a concern whatsoever.

Vdara near Aria is completely smoke free (and it has no casino).

Hampton Inn Tropicana is smoke free. It is close but not walkable from everything I’ve gleaned here. It would be a very short drive if you have a car. I plan to Uber.

Vegas is not a great town for you. I would look for a hotel chain room that does not allow smoking. Marriott or Hilton come to mine. Any hotel with a casino is probably going to be a risk.

I believe Vdara is also smoke-free.

Aria isn't smoke-free, but has one of the best air filtration systems to minimize the smell.

My staywell room STUNK! (they did give me a discount but I just moved to a regular room after 2 nights LOL!)

I just read on TripAdvisor that The Orleans shuttle now just goes to The Fashion Show Mall rather than The Linq. Just a heads up for anyone planning to use it to get mid-Strip (or if anyone was planning to stay near The Linq and take it to The Orleans).

Just booked my hotel (Orleans) on hotels.com - rate was reasonable. Planning on flying in on Wednesday night and enjoying Thursday before going to competition on Friday & Saturday.

Waiting to book flights for now - I think prices will dip again in the next 2-3 weeks. I haven’t bought my SA tickets yet but I don’t think they will sell out.

But getting a hotel that’s close enough to the arena was the most nerve wrecking thing to me, anyway.

So you won't be attending the practice sessions on Thurs? I'm of mixed mind about that since I'll have family with me.

Practice sessions are more boring than you'd think. I think some people like to watch them to see the strategy of the athletes or as a tool to try to predict how someone will skate. In reality they're just skaters derping around the ice surface doing random skills and maybe a half-baked runthrough (although some go all out). A lot of top skaters don't even bother showing up to every practice session so it's a toss up if your favorite will be there - and what they're doing if they are there.
That being said, popping in for a few minutes is never a bad thing. It's always fun to see how different skaters prepare for competition.

NAH. I’d rather spend the day exploring Vegas.

I was hoping to see a show but I don’t see anything interesting for that Thursday yet.

I hate Vegas and I enjoy practice sessions up to a point. But at least half that point is socializing with friends in the audience. :D

OTOH, my fam will be annoyed if I do NOTHING with them all weekend.

Put it in reverse!

Practice sessions are a treasure trove and a gold mine...

Almost ALL my photos with figure skaters come from practice sessions. (And as many know ANL isn't afraid to bumrush). There is no such thing as making a fool of yourself at a SkAm.

If it werent for practice sessions all these personal photos with Joubert, Belbin, Agosto, Delobel, Navka, Peter T, Sebestyen, Frank Carrol, Cohen, Van der Perren (lurve), Ando and my shrine with Angela Nikodinov wouldn't exist.

Hmmmm I think I need to start going to comps again.... I could use some more current photos.

I am arriving on Tuesday so I have time to sightsee and still go to the practices! :cheer: I’ve hired a car too so I can get around easily. If I remember to drive on the right that is

I love practice sessions. :drama:

I like practice sessions because it allows me to see more FS. I don't find them boring at all. I actually find them very relaxing, as they lack the stress and intensity of competition.

I went to quite a few practice sessions at the Vancouver Olympics. Since I could only afford to attend four competition events (because tix were so expensive), attending the practices made me feel that I had a rather full Olympic FS experience.

The Orleans Hotel website notes it is sold out Friday and Saturday but Expedia and others still have rooms available for that weekend.

Rooms may have opened back up. I just changed my booking to Thur - Sun on the Orleans website. $49 for Thur/$119 for Fri/Sat ($99 rooms are sold out)

The website says it's still sold out. :( Maybe I will try calling.

Do call - it said it was sold out several weeks ago, and I called and they said oh, we still have hundreds of rooms for that group. When she asked for a code, I gave her the one on the website and that was it. The only thing is they charged a higher rate, which I need to follow up on.

ETA, it was the Orleans I spoke with and where I got the room, not the other hotel they are directing you to on the website.
