Or recast her. I am sure there are many actresses that would happily get those hallmark deals.
Well, they could just have her leave town and make someone else mayor, but it would probably be one of the men. There aren't any other strong females to take over. (geez, I make it sound like it's real life! I just like it cause it's a Janette Oke (sp?) family friendly story like the Love Comes Softly series, like Little House on the Prairie, and not preachy.) I don't have Hallmark Movies and Mysteries anymore since I downgraded from U300 to U200, but there are other female led "mysteries" on there already. They don't need to recast the one she was in, just take the other actors and recycle them into other shows. The only one I ever watched every episode was the Hayley Dean mysteries, by Nancy Grace of all people, without all the sleaze, after I read the books. Way off topic here. Back to the subject...do these people realize that they are affecting other people's lives if their shows are cancelled because of something they did.

We use Direct tv now 45 bucks a month with taxes and so get the mystery station.

I got the U300 for the price of U200 for 2 years. Then the bundle price special was over. That's the only channel I miss. (And I'll have to get whatever package they have that has the Olympic channel in it in three years.)

So,

Apparently, people didn’t need to bribe the guy, unless that was the only way to get them in?

http://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/26265738/mickelson-hired-tutor-firm-surprised-scheme

"We, along with thousands of other families, hired him and his company to help guide us through the college application process," Mickelson said. "We're as shocked as everyone the last few days."

San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana wants fans to know his kids got into college based on “their hard work and their merit,” not because they falsified applications.

"Our kids, schools are like fighting to get them," Mickelson said. "I say that as a proud dad. Their grades and outside activities and worldly beliefs are things that have colleges recruiting them. [Singer and his company] helped us through the whole process because it can be confusing." “

Excerpt from Montana story: The 62-year-old Montana was named as a client of William Singer — the man at the center of the college admissions scandal involving Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman. Singer pleaded guilty to four charges Tuesday, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and racketeering conspiracy.

Montana, who was not among the individuals charged by federal prosecutors, said his family used Singer as a consultant, but did not engage in illegal activity.

Comment under the Joe Montana story:

"University Admissions: Who is your father? Kid: Joe Montana, former QB for San Francisco 49ers, He won 4 Superbowls .....Application Stamped .....APPROVED"

I suspect they had a different career path in mind for their kid and weren't listening to what she wanted. Maybe they thought that if she only got into a good college, she'd see the light and change her mind? They wouldn't be the first parents to do that.
I sure hope that was the reason - that they wanted to get them off the party track. I sure hope it wasn't so that Olivia Jade would have another venue for her influencer business or that she was whining that she wanted the game day party experience.

Like figure skaters who win some local competition and put that on their college applications as championship figure skater.

Not a college application but I did know a young lady in the youth organization I work with who generously padded her figure skating accomplishments on her yearly bio. The first year I heard her do that, I kind of scratched my head and went "huh? I don't remember seeing her name as a Nationals competitor," then went back to my hotel room and powered up my laptop to do a search for her skating results. I found her listed as either scheduled to take or passing her pre-juvenile tests a couple years earlier but dismissed it, figuring she'd have to stop soon enough because people would cotton to her lies when she never made it to the Olympics. Instead, she continued for several more years and had her own advisers completely snowed. Finally, the last year she did it, I was so fed up at the end of our annual banquet because she had claimed she competed at a JGP in one of the Baltic nations and was aiming for the Olympics, so I went up to one of her advisers and told that person they needed to do some basic fact-checking before the girl submitted her bio the following year, and that this girl was NOT an international-level figure skater. Then, a couple months later, I laughed in the face of someone else who told me the girl was going to miss a yearly training retreat because she had a skating competition in Belize. In AUGUST! Yeah, no, burst that bubble with those folks and told them 1) there are no ice skating competitions in Belize, 2) Belize doesn't have a national skating federation so any competitions would be unsanctioned and the girl would lose her Olympic eligibility if she competed in one, and 3) there are no ice skating rinks in BELIZE! I lost track of the girl after that year, but I do know she's never made it to Nationals at any level in any discipline.

Are there actual people named Biff and Buffy who were not in Back to the Future/busy fighting vampires? Those don't sounds like very 1 percentish names to me.

I didn't know any Biffs but I did know two Buffy's growing up in a small, California Central Valley town in the late '80s. One was named Elizabeth but went by Buffy because, as a toddler, one of her siblings turned the "th" to an "f" trying to pronounce "Bethy", so her nickname morphed from "Bethy" to "Buffy" and it stuck with her all through high school. After HS she went off to college and became "Beth" - can't say I blame her. Her family was middle-class, definitely not among the 1%. The other one was named Buffie and that was not a nickname and they were also pretty middle-class.

I went to a private woman's college in Virginia, where we had our share of 1 percenters but those girls usually had family surnames as first names (or middle names that they used instead of their standard-issue first names of "Ann" or "Elizabeth" or "Sarah" or "Mary").

This entire scandal puzzles and appalls me. I don't have an issue with legacy/development admits, nor do I have an issue with athletic admits. I'm just trying to figure out how you falsify athletic records to make a non-athlete successful enough to be recruited to any college. Even a niche sport like crew has to have more than one coach, right? Wouldn't someone realize, at some point, that the student wasn't on the team? Or was it irrelevant that they weren't on the crew team once they were on campus and in classes?

Jack doesn’t sound like a bad kid at all. As for Lori’s daughters sounds like they were going to please parents and they would have been fine with ASU
I was thinking it would be perfect for Olivia.

Of course she didn't think much of him. He was going to damage her brand.
True. But I read that article and didn't see anything where she cast aspersions on him.

Mayors need to get elected occasionally. ;)

I didn't know any Biffs but I did know two Buffy's growing up in a small, California Central Valley
One of the parents involved in the scandal was called Bambi on the local news last night (Bambi is local to us as are about 1/4 of the 33 parents.)

It was irrelevant. After the kid gets in and school starts, the coach would just list them as having decided not to play after all.

Huffman and Laughlin are both named in yet another lawsuit which is claiming damages against those named by authorities.

In her filing to a San Francisco court on Wednesday, Ms Toy said that her son Joshua applied to some of the schools mentioned in the US Department of Justice complaint "but did not make the cut for some undisclosed reason".
"I'm now outraged and hurt because I feel that my son, my only child, was denied access to a college, not because he failed to work and study hard enough, but because wealthy individuals felt it was OK to lie, cheat, steal and bribe their children's way into a good college," her civil suit states.
A separate $5m lawsuit brought by students from Stanford University claims they were deceived when they agreed to pay the fees required with each application. The students requested compensation for the fees.

We have a local coach whose resume (at least 10+ years ago when he was recruiting me for lessons from groups) claimed himself a 5-time US National Champion. Not totally false, he just forgot to mention he was the Adult Novice National Champion. I think that's a pretty important distinction (and I think the rule book says something about how you can title yourself if you didn't win the senior championship, but I am not sure).

He also claimed to be a world champion. Based on the ISU Obsterdorf competition; which is in NO way a world championship.

He's a decent coach if your goal is to have fun with skating. The exaggerations/lies were just not needed.

Lori's daughters seem very entitled. But I guess that is what happens when your parents have $500,000 to buy your way to college. The strange thing is, they were both vocal about not wanting to go so I wonder why the parents bribed the school and forced them to go? Olivia Jade got a lot of endorsement deals (or whatever you call a partnership with a social media influencer) so maybe that is why?

Do you remember when Mike Pike featured on his website?: "World Figure Skating Champion". Well, yes, in juniors.... I kind of threw up a little in my mouth when I saw that, But then I remembered how tacky his entire family was at Nationals one year. Booing competitors, hollering with joy when a competitor fell, giving high fives. Some will say they were just rooting for their "World Champion". They were obnoxious, and though I like obnoxious people, they were too over the top about it.

I would love to see what the students have to affirm when they send their applications in regarding truthfulness and completeness.

This is what is in Yale's admitted student instructions:

The admissions committee reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission under any of the following circumstances:
• if your behavior brings into question your honesty, integrity, or character
• if any part of the application you submitted is shown not to be your own work and truthful

I got an updated email from the President of Yale today stating:

5. Is Yale conducting an investigation into the admitted student? What disciplinary action will Yale take?

Yale is investigating the allegations and will take action if they prove true. On the very rare occasion when Yale receives an allegation that a current student included false information in an application, Yale gives the student the opportunity to address the allegation. If Yale determines that the allegation is true, the student’s admission is rescinded, based on language in the application that requires applicants to affirm that everything in the application is true and complete.

So yes, a student can have their admission revoked for including false information on the application. The email also stated that Yale can't comment on the particulars due to student privacy laws, but the WSJ reported that the father of this student, who also attended but did not graduate from Yale, is the one who tipped off federal investigators as he was trying to get leniency in his own insider trading prosecution. Sounds like a family of winners...

So these lawsuits people are filing now because they were not accepted at the schools that have been named in this scheme .... how could they ever prove that this 'bribe and cheat scheme' was "the only reason" they were rejected? They could have been rejected for any number of reasons completely unrelated to this scheme. Just because you got rejected from USC doesn't mean it was specifically because Loughlin and hubby bribed their daughters way in. Not sure I could ever vote for that argument if I was on a jury. Just sayin' ..... :shuffle:

An update on the lawsuits. One of the people named in the first lawsuit has since dropped out but others have since joined it.

Though Olsen has since dropped out of the suit, Woods is joined by a woman named Lauren Fidelak, who—after maintaining a perfect GPA and scoring an impressive 34 on her ACT—apparently suffered from an emotional breakdown and had to be hospitalized when she was denied entry into both the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California. Meanwhile, per the indictment, USC accepted academically lackluster influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli after her parents allegedly gave $500,000 to admissions-fixer William Singer.

Aaaand Lori Loughlin's husband believes that there are too many "entitled" people and "takers" out there, getting things that they don't deserve to have because they don't work hard enough. The irony is killing me....

He and Jane Buckingham (of son Jack fame) have a lot in common:

In the premiere episode of “Job or No Job,” which ran on ABC Family in 2015 for one season, Jane Buckingham explains why she signed on to host the show, in which she gives millennials career guidance. “I have seen so many young people trying to find a great job but most don’t have the tools they need,” Ms. Buckingham says. “People under 30 have some of the highest levels of unemployment in the country.”

But, she said, “nobody’s ever told them what they don’t want to hear.”

The conceit of the show was that Ms. Buckingham, the founder and chief executive of a youth marketing consultancy called Trendera and an author of advice books, would coach recent college graduates on real-world skills, like preparing for job interviews. “It’s pretty clear that young people have some misconceptions about what’s acceptable and what’s not,” she told The Observer in 2015 about her motivation. “I don’t think that that’s because they’re arrogant or anything like that, I just think no one’s giving it to them straight and I can do that,” she said.

“You’ll see some people acting so entitled that you want to slap them,” Ms. Buckingham said in that same interview,

I don’t know why more aren’t upset with her. I mean people are going off on Olivia about being honest about not liking school. She is young.

Jane though wow. Her poor kids. You could so sense the son “unbeknownst to me.” I somehow believe him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was project project on time for son to go to college fix the ACT. She is probably annoyed that her son has to compete at all with plebians.

There are many, many other schools that she could easily get into, and get an excellent education at, with those kinds of qualifications. If she had to be hospitalized because she didn't get into the schools she wanted to go to, IMO she has much more serious problems than Lori Loughlin's daughter allegedly taking a place she could have had. Sorry, but I don't think this particular lawsuit is going to go very far.

Okay now see, here's where I have a problem with the lawsuits. If you are that unstable that you have an emotional breakdown and have to be hospitalized because you got rejected from a certain college, perhaps thru the application and interview process they could see that you were mentally unstable to begin with and THAT'S why you were rejected.

It doesn't matter if you got straight A+'s in every single class you had from kindergarden thru 12th grade, took all AP weighted courses in high school, had the highest GPA in your school ever, got perfect scores on ACT and SAT tests .... they still don't have to accept you and they can reject you for any reason they want. Sorry but that's just the way the world works. Maybe they just didn't like you. Maybe you had a sucky personality. Maybe they checked your social media presence and they see years worth of posts that show you are a person of questionable morals. Maybe you came off as arrogant or uncooperative or combative or entitled (okay, bad example) in your interviews. Maybe there were 1,000 other high school kids who had that same academic record as you and they just didn't pick you. This scheme is not the only reason you got rejected. So again, if I'm on that jury, you lose.

Yes if you are having a mental breakdown well you have other problems.

One of the biggest life lessons I have learned in the last few years is to focus on the areas of your life you can control rather than what you cannot.

You can control doing your best to getting good scores and good grades that will get you in somewhere maybe scholarship.

And I don’t think kids life should be all over scheduled over stressed etc.

Why are these parents/students who were denied admission suing? They have the chance of making some money via a settlement of some sort. I’m not denying their outrage or the possibility that they may have been treated unfairly, but honestly, to borrow from Tonya, I think they are primarily “seeing dollar signs in their heads.”

And even more so than the parents, the lawyers are seeing multiple of dollar signs.:bribe:

these people have no legal arguments whatsoever (unless Addie Admissions Officer testifies oh, you’re right, we would have taken you poor put upon Patty and you specifically were denied admission for a fake rower. Which I highly doubt will happen)

and the lawyers should know better. Ha:D

I think admissions fees should be refunded. There is also I am a special snowflake concept there are a lot of really good students.

I do think some of the athletes who were passed up may have a suit.

The only ones I see having a chance at a valid lawsuit are the ones first up on the wait lists. If the fraud students hadn't been admitted, these are the ones that would have been.

I wouldn't even support refunding application fees for anyone else. They would have had to pay those to get rejected without fraud in place.
