Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir #48: Long Time Running

A few interesting comments : with regards to Carmen " Although they didn't find it offensive in any way, judges and officials advised Tessa and Scott to tone down the provocative program to make it more widely acceptable. They made the adjustments, but now wish they'd stayed with the original". "....Scott describes it as "a three-and-a-half minute program". "It lacked punch in the final thirty seconds, but they were unsuccessful in convincing Marina to ratchet it up to a more memorable climax". Marina and Igor split "That was heartbreaking for us," Tessa said. "What we loved about Igor and Marina was their dynamic and how they complemented one another technically and artistically..." "We were closer to Marina at the time ....I'm pretty confident in saying that, knowing what we know now, we might have made a different decision".

About having a feeling of isolation in Sochi they say "Almost as if noticing that, Canadian hockey coach Mike Babcock visited them in the athletes' village gym and cafeteria and advised them to be strong between the ears". Patrice Lauzon, coaching another team, came to every one of their practices and even visited them in the warm-up area right before the individual free dance, wordlessly touching Tessa's face in a gesture of support".

Bring back Carmen and make it RAUNCHY!!!!!

I don't want to quote too much more and take away their thunder but it is a very lovely book, full of pictures, many new. Although it does not seem to be an expose and they give lots of credit to both their coaches and competitors, they do seem to be quite open about their feelings throughout their career, both good and bad.

Ok I think puglover will be a lot faster in posting commentaries lol. I'm so busy I'm not sure when I'll even have time to read it fully, but I did skim the first of the new chapters. I thought it was interesting what they said about the Marina and Igor split. They don't go into detail about what transpired between them and Marina, but Scott implies they would have left with Igor if they had known. Some other interesting things to me: Scott dedicates the book to Cale and G Mac, His friend and grandfather who both passed away during their comeback season. From other reviews I've read of the book, that year was particularly tough for him.
Some quotes from the intro and sleeve of the book:
"Everyone is in love with their relationship," says Kate Virtue, Tessa's mother. "It had its ups and downs but they worked every day for twenty years on that relationship. People, all of us, should learn from that."
"I think in all of this discussion about what our partnership means, we're the two people, right in the centre of it, who understand the least about it because it's all we know."--Tessa
"I've been in awe for twenty-one years, since this little girl walked into my life and changed it forever. It's pretty amazing to look back and have shared so much."--Scott

The Thank You Canada Tour starts tomorrow! Who's excited?? Who's lucky enough to go? My whole family is flying to Canada to catch the Quebec show. 3 non-skating fans and 1 superfan (me)...hoping to turn the other 3 into skating fans as well. ;) Figured that this might just be the show to do it!

O, have a good time! Hope your family will love this show. Can't wait reports.

How wonderful! Oh my goodness, safe travels and I truly hope you and your family enjoy the show and Canada of course :)

I am going to the November show in Moncton, New Brunswick. Taking my Mum. She has never seen any of these skaters live with the exception of Elvis at 1999 Skate Canada! She will enjoy it. She used to take me to Canadians and Skate Canada when I was a skater in 80s and sometimes my Dad and bro would come too.

Everyone travel safe and enjoy! And also, please come here immediately post show to share! Hahaha. jk

I have heard a number of times about their "key words" that they use as they skate to remember important points. I did not realize it was introduced to them by Marijane Stong, who came from Canada to coach them briefly in Canton while others were away. They say their favorite key word is "together" but I had to smile that during their frustrating years leading up to the Sochi Olympics they used the key words "screw it". Tessa says she was seriously contemplating quitting after Worlds in London and wasn't sure if she should even return for one more competitive season, but they attended the Canada Olympic camp in May and seeing all the banners empowered her.

I'm going to the Thank You Canada tour in Mississauga - the afternoon show because I'm taking my niece. She is a huge skating fan and was living in Kuwait for the last several years before moving back to Canada and so she has never seen high-level skating live. We're both excited! :D

Oh that sucks. I was planning on going to the Scott Hamilton show they’re doing in Nashville in November. I was so excited, what are the chances that I’m near Nashville now for school and they’re coming to Nashville of all places in the states, only to find out I have an exam that Monday. But anyway everyone going to the Abbotsford show (which is sold out!) and future shows have a great time!

You know they'll be running that segment for a while for all those people who didn't see the vid before attending, so I'm going to wing it. ;)
Hahah! I will have plenty of time and will still probably wing it! Should I try to teach my 75 year old Mum? Giggle.

Is there any talk in the book about her injury struggled, you know the ones where she had to stop half way through a FD or two at a couple 4CCs?

Yes! They talk a fair bit about her second surgery, the recovery, the re-training she/they had to do, and then how it affected them

With regards to Tessa and her leg condition - I can't exactly remember how much they divulged in their first book and can't seem to lay my hands on it right now but -

. lots of credit to Bruce Carven - a sport physiotherapist and strength and conditioning coach from Saskatoon who felt the recurrence of the pain was in the mechanics and how Tessa used her muscles

. they both made the difficult transition of relearning their technique and how they did interval training

. still some pain but greatly reduced and helped in their strength and speed

. this was very much their project - they took accountability - different from how they had previously prepared in Canton. "We took control, we watched the video, we made the changes".

. started having fun because the pain was manageable, sometimes absent and she rebounded more quickly.

. before 2013 Worlds - got a bit casual about things - less time with Bruce Craven, backslid, "We didn't pay the price in October, November and December but we paid the price in February at Four Continents".

. two minutes into the free dance - Tessa had severe cramping - stopped - wonders if she could have pushed through the pain - Scott constantly reminding her how much pain she had prevailed over to reach that point.

. i believe they don't mention it ever again in the book - not in regards to their comeback - would be nice to know - but probably things would be different if it still continued as a problem.

. they really immersed themselves in the games in Sochi. "That part of the Olympic experience was our best one, not Vancouver, not Pyeongchang". Scott smiles "Which is hilarious because when people think of our Olympic story, they're afraid to mention Sochi". They felt no shame in finishing second to Meryl and Charlie.

Thanks Golden!
Wish you could be here!
Cannot wait for Kitchener.
Thank you!! Have a great time and enjoy the show!! Can't wait to hear your report.
I was really hoping for Tessa and Scott doing Art on Ice but I think AoI already revealed all skaters for this year's show. Tessa and Scott and Aljona and Bruno in one show would have been a dream come true, too good to be true in the end :(.

They didn’t announce any ice dancers. Are they not having any dancers this year?
