Re Sam's clips, he's working with the Gadbois teams as always but he had a few weeks break because he has been working with the cirque du Soleil. I believe he was back at Gadbois last week to work more on choreography.

So I’ve seen that Galiyanova and Lochead have been assigned JPG #3. It’s weird that they have a JGP assignment but were beaten by Makita & Gunara at both Minto and Lake Placid but M&G don’t have one. Can someone explain this?

For the record, I thought Makita & Gunara were the standouts of the junior event at Minto. Their RD was absolutely amazing. So difficult (constantly in a hold and they had the best tango feel). They have Virtue & Moir type of toe point, matching extension/leg line and posture. Their only downside at this point is she looks a bit young.

Re: Fabbri and her new partner, I get that Skate Canada is high on her but their FD looked rough. Tons of open skating and hand-to-hand holds. I guess we’ll see how they do internationally. She has a mature look and maybe Skate Canada thinks that’s an advantage internationally.

Skate Canada has not been high on her...They totally buried her and former partner at nationals and sent a newbie team to Worlds who broke up shortly thereafter. With her former partner she won a bronze on JGP last yr and a 5th at another JGP.
They were very well rec'd by international judges. According to Ted her skating skills and edges are outstanding and her maturity and drama are well beyond her years. That was when she was 14 and she has just turned 15. This is the first time she has competed with her new partner and I was very impressed with him as well. I have no idea when they got together but it had to have been later than March. What i noticed mostly was their speed and power across the ice and their closeness to each other especially in their twizzles. Skate Canada is doing some back pedaling in her case thank God.

I noticed lots of the teams at Minto were really good but I am going to go back and look at Makita and Gunara again . I love all of Wing and Lowe's teams. (by the way do not underestimate the power of Lane's politiking)

Fabbri’s old partner messed up the twizzles badly in one if not both programs at nationals so that’s why they didn’t place well.

She and her new partner do have speed and power but are never in a hold.

He did NOT mess them up badly....in the short dance he had a slight balance check which Ted said was a tiny mistake which would give them a very slight deduction and praised everything else about the program. Instead they hardly got any marks for the twizzles and were slaughtered on PCS. Forgive me but as Ted with another invented the IJS system I am going to go along with his critique.

Ted is notoriously positive with his commentary. That’s great for enjoying programs but less so for evaluating them.

Let's just stick with your first comment. It made sense. As far as your opinion of Ted's expertise when you get to the pearly gates that might be the deciding factor of where you end up.

What a totally ridiculous comment, especially when wickedwitch is posting something that's accurate and not offensive

You could actually look at the video, where Pietroantonio falls out of the twizzles before Fabri, or look at the protocol and see that it dropped them to a level 1 with negative GOE from 7 out of 9 judges, or even look at the PBP from FSU where it is mentioned.

But don't let facts get in the way of your wuzrobbing ;)

Or you can look at the correct year. Your video is of 2017 nationals not 2018.

Agree with you 100% I guess SC didn’t support Alicia and Claudio probably because of age difference and look. I also agree that they weren’t protected at Nationals! It’s a shame! Ayer is good but doesn’t have the quality of skating that Pietrantonio had

Claudio is great and his body movement for Latin was so good. I do hope he is able to find a partner. I was pleasantly surprised with Ayer and they are with the same coaches and choreographer so their material should be good and their skills always improving. I will see what Ted says at the grand prix.

Valid point, but they still messed up.

They did.
And the team that finished four spots above them in 3rd took a fall.
And the team that got the second berth to Junior Worlds went on to lose to teams that both of those other teams had defeated head-to-head on the Junior Grand Prix. (And blew their own twizzles at Junior Worlds).

Now here we are the following season with teams #2, 3, 5, 6, 7, & 9 from last year's Canadian Junior Nationals all split up. Not sure this says great things about last year's Canadian Junior Nationals dance event. (I could say that about the JGP, but the three teams listed at the top above appeared pretty happy with their results there).

Ultimately, however, if you can't stick together through one poorly skated competition or disappointing set of results, then you aren't going to last through the transition to seniors anyway.

There were mistakes at Junior Nationals. And while you could kind of see that Canada hadn't selected the strongest possible second team for Junior Worlds, McIsaac & Graham did have a comparable placement on the JGP to make selecting them for the team the likely scenario.

The dancers have moved on. In most cases you can see that the new partnerships have more of a size difference than before. Whether this will result in more competitive teams in the long run remains to be seen. Ultimately, a new partner doesn't resolve the weaknesses of each individual. Those will have to be resolved with old-fashioned hard work. But not a bad start for most of these teams at Lake Placid and Minto, IMO. Some of the new teams probably do have more long-term potential than before.

(Having said all that, the team I most enjoyed was Makita & Gunara, who look more like a team than any of the new ones because they have been together longer).

3 IFS articles in anticipation of the JGP starting soon! :D

Artur Danielian who won a medal at 2018 Junior Worlds (silver) after placing 7th in his only previous JGP: https://www.ifsmagazine.com/artur-danielian-zero-to-junior-hero/

There is a way to cover skating — it is important to tell the stories without being negative or critical. You do have to be honest. A bad skate is a bad skate. Call it a tough skate or whatever you want to call it — but you don’t have to be mean. I try to choose the right words and I think that resonates with people.
I have a huge responsibility to be honest and encouraging. The kids get off the ice and they go and watch their video immediately. They hear what I had to say, so I feel a responsibility to support what their coaches are teaching them, the parents who are supporting them and the money being invested in them.
Skaters are not naïve. They know if they had a good skate or not and if they hear from us what their coaches are telling them — ‘don’t give up, here are some little things to improve’ — then there is something for them to build on.

And that is why we all love Ted so much! I can’t wait to hear him again!

I love Ted if for no other reason that he is the force behind getting the ISU to live stream the JGP on youtube. Excellent quality streaming and Ted's commentary is always honest, fair and positive. He calls bad skates, bad skates, but isn't critical of the skater. I can't wait for the JGP to start. It's the highlight of the fall skating for me and often times, better skating than what we see from some of the seniors. Just look at what Trusova did in the Russian test skates.

I don't know what's going on with the Canadian ladies assignments. The Skate Canada site now lists Cotop for Slovakia, Bulawka for Austria and Bausback for Lithuania. But the ISU site now has Schumacher for Slovakia, Cotop for Austria, and Bausback for Lithuania.

Skate Canada has still not changed the entries in ice dance that they did after Minto although ISU has the changes now. I would trust the ISU site based on that or check the skaters instagram.

Except that Emma Bulawka being listed is new. Originally, SC had Aurora for the first one, Alison 2nd and Emily 3rd. And those were the original ISU entries. Then the ISU entries changed. But having Emma listed on the SC is definitely new, not just something that hasn't changed yet.

The U.S. entries for the the third JGP have been confirmed & added to the USFSA assignment page now.
http://www.usfigureskating.org/story?id=84032&menu=TeamUSA

Odd that Torgashev is confirmed for two already, isn't it? Hiwatashi didn't get a second event two years ago, even after medaling at Junior Worlds. I always assumed that was based on his first event scores. And Torgashev didn't make the Junior World team last season. He made the JGPF, and USFS should have enough men's spots for all three of the more experienced & competitive guys from last year's JGP to have two events. But this seems like they've changed their policy, no?

Maybe he requested early events and Tomoki requested late events for one reason or another, school related perhaps. One never knows, but either way, Andrew, Tomoki, and Camden are worth the 2 each.

Now it's Schumacher, Bulawka and Bausback for Canada---no Cotop for the first three JGPs. From what I have heard, Skate Canada is planning to send her to one Senior B and one JGP, so maybe the JGP will be later in the series.
