Is anyone victim of an olympic burnout ? This schedule was nuts and there is still one to go tomorrow. It did take away a bit of the enjoyment tbh Being cranky certainly has a lot to do with. Plus we can't get videos easily so the only commentaries I heard where during the live stream and they were russian, boy can they talk even the kids keep mentioning it hearing so much Russian all season long :D Milan will be a breath of fresh air with the schedule and the choice of commentators available to us.

Ugh I did two nights in a row with only 3-4 hours of sleep, let me tell you that I'm not very productive at work... plus I'm going on vacation on Friday so it doesn't help my motivation. I'm a zombie...

On the other hand, the Russian commentators give me hope that my country doesn't have the worst commentators, esp in figure skating. They keep mispronouncing the names, telling nonsense or misinforming the viewers and their bad pronunciation of technical elements is just the cherry on top. (Papadakisová&Cizeron - three-time European champions although they did comment this year's Euros..., Moonlight Sonata choreographed by Christopher Dean, a perfect set of 'tvízles' The list goes on ) The worst thing was that there was hardly any other way of watching it live...
I'd love to see the ESP version, for example. I've only seen the ESP version of MR and at the end, both of the commentators wished for a split - give the gold to both teams. That was nice. :D

I am a bit, and the day between the 2 Ladies events doesn't help :cold: For me, it's 99% the schedule, it's just the worst part. Canot wait to be back on European schedule ! :cheer2: And can't wait for Milano too because we'll feel like it's back to normal

I can't stand this schedule anymore. Headache almost everyday for lack of sleep. Half-asleep in the office and drinking lots of espresso. Ugh!

Which Russian chanell it was? The Russian Eurosport commentators usually are not so incompetent, especially when it comes to elements (and the pronunciation/names of elements and sometimes even pronunciation of foreign names is what it is in Russian - very different from the original pronunciation), although sometimes they definitely can say incorrect things about skaters themselves/injuries/other things, and I wouldn't be surprised if they said that P/C's FD was choreographed by Dean. It seems like they are too busy with other things to read and remember a lot of information about skaters.

Or was it a Match TV or Channel 1 stream that you were watching? The commentators there are not so incompetent either, but I think I saw some videos where someone other than the usual commentators was commentating.

In any case, the so beloved by many British Eurosport commentators have much bigger problems with skater's names than any Russian commentator that I have heard, and they definitely also talk a lot of misinformative nonsense.

I love Chris and Simon, but this is true. They are terrible with names, despite knowing the skaters for years. And they def. talk a lot of missinformation on the technical aspect. Especially in the ID which they aren't very knowledgeable. Nicky Slater, who used to be an Ice Dancer, was the only one who knew but he hasn't been commentating for ESP for a couple of seasons now.

Chris and Simon are like the two grandpas in the Muppet Show except less grumpy. They crack me up but they do say inaccurate things. However, I love the way they say Guillem instead of Guillaume. Guillem is catalan and the equivalent to William in the English language. Why is he choosing the catalan pronunciation probably because it's easier than the French one.
I love this photo posted earlier https://78.media.tumblr.com/df7a94fd9dd04f896149eb0d4123a76b/tumblr_p4ijlzdCST1r0p4u6o1_540.jpg
Some skaters are really getting along and this season C/B, H/D and P/C seem to be hitting it off really well. There is also this lovely photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bffwd-ylmLF/?taken-by=splashmadison

At the moment the only competent B.ESP commentator is Mark Hanretty, also a former ice dancer, who is currently a coach and choreographer. Mark always seems to do his homework before the broadcast and is up to date with the rules. Unfortunately he only commentates occasionally, especially now that he's involved with Dancing on Ice. Also Mark is a total PapCiz fanboy :D

Me too. :D And tbh, I do love the fact that they are usually very positive about skaters in general, but without being cheesy and biased. Because of that, I tend to forgive the inaccuracies.

Oh yes, I've heard him commentate some of the GP's. Who's commentating the Oly's on BESP? I am following it with the Italian commentators, Ambesi and Dolfini, so I have no clue.

No, no. I tried to give an example what it's like to watch figure skating on a Czech TV station. Things I wrote were a mixture of our national tv and the ESP Czech version. I've never watched an event on a Russian channel, so I have no idea about the commentators, their knowledge and things like that. I've only seen a few dances and I remember the guys at the microphones were talking throughout the whole numbers, which I find quite irritating. But they're definitely not the only ones who do this.
To the British Eurosport - it absolutely isn't flawless. I just mentioned their reaction to MR because I found it quite nice that they acknowledged MR and didn't forget about MS as well. :)

Gwillem sounds so medieval to me, don't know find it endearing. When can we hope for all the videos to pop up ? It took a long time after Sotchi didn't it?

Guillaume is the norman, northern part of France form of that name. In the southern part of France it is Guilhem. It is not far from Gwillem and indeed is medieval. I read that in the XIIth century if in a room full of sitting knights you called "Guillaume" three quarters of the knights would stand up.
Nowadays there are still a lot of Guillaumes, Guilhem is not as common.

I still don't understand what the French skating president has against P&C? They are pretty much the face of French skating so why is he picking fights with them? He needs them more than they need him.

We need Gwendal Peizerat to run the FFSG.

Yes he shared a video where canadians talk about how ridiculous Didier is and makes the FFSG look bad... He tweeted about it and tagged Gabi and Guillaume in his tweet... :sekret:

I saw it... hoping some can take actions. We need a real leader not someone who is interested in his own little self.

I'm not sure how Gaillaguet holds the FFSG like this - but it will probably take an alliance of all top French figure skaters past and present (Peizerat, Candeloro, Joubert, Papadakis&Cizeron) and the French minister for sport, to topple him. And I don't think that unity is likely to happen.

V/M won the Olympics before they won most everything else, if I remember correctly. Dom/Shab were the favorites going into the 2010 Olympics and I'm not sure there were many who expected the podium order to be like this.
P/C already have two world titles, four European titles and a GPF title. Olympic Gold would have been the icing on the cake. I don't think it would have been a given that they would have retired. I think it would have depended on how much they enjoy performing and creating vs still having the motivation to stick around. Contrary to V/M they would have had won everything there is to win if they had won. Getting another shot at winning gold in four years should be a strong incentive to stick around though.

DomShabs were the reigning world champs but they were carrying an injury into the Olympics. They were not the favorite for the OGM, particularly with the Olympics being in Vancouver.

V&M won only a bronze at the 2009 worlds but it was clear that they were OGM contenders by 2010. I don't remember how the season went, but i am sure they did well. I had expected them to win the OGM in 2010 before the games began. As juniors, V&M had won nearly every competition, including JWand had success very early as seniors, Their OGM in 2010 was not surprising at all.

I don't know but he got rid of a lot of people around him to make sure he's the only one in the running. What's needed at this point is a State intervention. It might be difficult to rebuild a good program when you get rid of the men behind all of this, but having Gaby&Guillaume carrying the team will make sure that you constantly have someone at the top for the next years, not putting French figure skating into a hole.

I'm not sure the government is really interested in what's happening in figure skating tbh...

Probably not, but it should be part of the minister for sports job. It's currently Laura Flessel, former athlete. Gwendal Peizerat has participated with her in a campaign to encourage young people to vote in the European election, so he may have some leverage there.
