Canadian Men 2017-18 season news & updates

Well he can do a quad lutz so I gues he can do a 3 lutz and he did triple loop in his long at nats with a 6.41 score..his triple axel got 10.49.
A lot of skaters can do the 3Lo well as a solo jump or as the first jump of a combo but not many attempt combos ending in +3Lo, especially not in SP. In men, Daisuke Murakami has been doing 3F+3Lo in SP (IIRC) and probably there are some other men I'm forgetting, but the overwhelming majority go for the +3T.

I've only seen a couple of Stephen's programs and can't remember seeing him do +3Lo combos; can somebody more knowledgeable tell off-hand whether he's attempted one in comp? Or has he been training one?

Also, are there current competitors other than Zagitova with a 3Lz+3Lo in SP? (Can't think of one.)

Considering how many men are doing two quads in the short - or at least doing a quad combo - I doubt we'll see many with 3Lo's anytime soon. Has anyone ever done quad+3Lo?

I can only recall quad+3T+3Lo combos in FS (Plushenko, Reynolds) and Abt's 3A+3Lo but quad+3Lo? I don't remember seeing any in comp (and my hip kinda hurts just thinking about it) but that doesn't mean somebody hasn't landed it...

Stephen became age eligible for junior only in December so he has to save his quads in the short until nationals roll around again as he competes as senior there.

I have to say, I love how much it seems like Keegan is taking in these games - I'm pretty sure he's been in the K&C for every single skate so far.

His enthusiasm is awesome! He was there for group one of the dance yesterday with only coaches as Canada was in flight 2, no other fellow skaters until group 2.

Yeah, Keegan seemed so thrilled to be there with team Canada. When the gold medal became official, he (and Charlie Bilodeau) looked as excited as if he had won the gold himself.

I guess it depends on how much he is able to practice..Brian and parents watch him very carefully and limit what he does and how much time he does it. Those teeny bones lengthen and THEN they strengthen but they are not allowed quads in the short program in juniors and I am not sure what limits are placed on the free.

Well, we should expect some kind of IJS revamp after this season/cycle concludes. I wouldn't be surprised if a quad is allowed in the short next year. Will likely depend on how many powerful federations have juniors who can do quads and therefore advocate for it. The others might throw up obstacles citing threats to the physical development of the boys. We'll see what happens, but I expect the issue will be raised at the very least.

Thoroughly enjoying Keegan Messing! He’s putting on a great show. We miss him in the USA, but Canada has welcomed him with open arms! Great job Keegan!

Canada's Keegan Messing "very pleased" with his performance in the free skate. "I did both quads, I nailed a triple axel and honestly I'm really excited I could leave at least one axel out there on the Olympic ice."

Even though neither Keegan or Patrick were perfect, I'm happy they both skated well enough in FS... and landed a nice 3A in FS.

And good for Keegan for getting a PB (FS + total) and some much needed momentum for the worlds! I don't know if Patrick has said anything about his plans but I assume he's not going to Worlds and it's up to Keegan and Nam to keep the 2 spots. Fingers crossed!

Also, why am I not surprised by this?
Fun fact...Keegan Messing taught me everything I know about yoyo tricks when we were kids. #TheMoreYouKnow

Assuming Patrick does not go, I think Keegan and Nam have a GREAT shot at keeping our two spots. Nam was really solid at nationals and Keegan is always fairly consistent (Love both programs, so Kurt-esque).

Nam will have to skate basically cleanly because I don’t think he’ll get any PCS help.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Joseph Phan does at Jr worlds. Also curious to see if he does the JGP next year.

I do hope that the men can keep the 2 places through to Montreal 2020. I actually think that a more open field at 2019 Worlds might help, but someone's gotta step up to be top 12.

At least one person who was ahead of Keegan at the Olympics won't be at Worlds (Patrick), so that puts him 11th if everyone skates the same. Which they won't because it's the men and even the standings between the short and long had lots of movement.

Keeping two spots is possible, but I wouldn't say it is a slam dunk. Both men making the free skate is also important, otherwise someone has to finish top 10. Nam's missed it before. So I think a good short program is more important than ever.

Keegan also made mistakes, but was in the mix. With the same mistake as Patrick (missed axel) they were only 5 points apart in marks. He also had PCS in the 8s at these games (low 8s in the SP, mid 8s in the FP) which might go up to mid-high 8s at Worlds.

If he puts out a clean short, he's shown here that he could probably score in the low 90s. A clean Adam Rippon was less than 3 points ahead of the 'unknown' Keegan with a fall in the SP.

I don't see Chan competing. If Nam keeps his training up and neither he nor Keegs have a meltdown skate in the short then I really can't see our two spots being in danger.

Speaking of Nam, he tweeted "The real king for me tonight was Javi" after the mens skates. (After he tweeted "Patrick" followed by the crying emoji and a heart)

Given how marks often reflect more than just what is put on the ice, I would say a clean Keegan will be about 5 points over a clean Adam. Adam has a very high profile at these games and like it or not that can have an affect. Given Keegan is doing a quad toe which is basically 5 points over a 3 flip, much more complicated choreography, and will go to Worlds as Canada’s number 1, I see a rise in PCS as well.

I was kind of expecting Patrick to be invited to the gala, considering he's now leaving competition, and he's left quite a legacy in the sport.

Instead, he has not been invited, yet Misha Ge (whose gala performances I enjoy) who finished in 17th place has been invited.
