Canadian Men 2017-18 season news & updates

I thoroughly enjoyed Chan, Messing, Balde and Nam, all great and entertaining. :cheer2::)

Reynolds not so much. Without the jumps, his program is rather boring. Makes me sad however but that was my impression.:(

Kudos to Elladj for ending his career (?) on a high with those 4CC skates.

Also, just saw the video of Kevin's gala skate from Canadians. If only he could have shown that personality in his competitive routines!! (And the afro is almost better than his regular hair)
Elladj was invited to participate in the Gala at 4CCs - he did a James Brown medley :)

Kevin's gala skate at Canadians was choreographed by Misha Ge :)

I thought the same thing when I saw his exhibition number. That style suits him, it’s refreshing. His ling program for the last two years has been introved/serious/depressing skating which didn’t help his cause.

Kudos to Elladj and Kevin! And I'm looking forward to the new generation of Canadian men coming up the ranks, including more of Nam and Keegan along with hopefully a beneficial rivalry developing between Nicolas and Roman, as well as Joseph Phan, Conrad Orzel and Stephen Gogolev all battling for top honors domestically and internationally.

It will be a changing of the guard as I would imagine that Kevin and Liam may be retiring along with Elladj and Patrick.

Since graduating from high school, Roman Sadovsky has begun a skating vlog. He has an unexpectedly lively and antic, fun-loving personality that doesn't really come across that way on the ice. Roman recently shared his strong opinions about the importance of the quad, and his amazing expertise in jumping over a moving sports car, ;) not to mention his obvious filmmaking and video-editing talents. Here's a link to the thread on Roman's views and vlogs, started by @skateboy in Trash Can:

Elladj says goodbye to competitive Skating:
"I might be done competing but I'm not done skating": With a heart felt message‪@elladjbalde‬e says goodbye to competitive figure skating after his 8th place at the ISU Four Continents .

Wow, I didn't know that about Elladj having suffered from a concussion earlier in the season. How amazing that with the help of his coaches, his choreographer, medical professionals and his fitness specialist, he was able to regain his health to the point of being able to train and compete at a high level for his final two competitions of the season, Cdn Nationals and 4CCs. I'm so happy for Elladj for his happiness in achieving his goals and retiring on his own terms with among the most entertaining and uplifting performances he's achieved. He's had some very affecting performances throughout his career too (I enjoyed his programs from last season as well). Here's his Cdn gala performance:

I can't remember if it was Firus or Balde who said that the two of them were planning to go on a cross-Canada road trip after the season visiting rinks and doing workshops and coaching.

kwanfan1818, it was Firus, in a Bev Smith article in November:
https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2017/11/23/liam-firus-spinning-straw-into-gold/

"In the same vein, Firus is the guy who is going to jump in his car, drive across the country and give back to the sport, conducting seminars and telling young skaters at clubs about what he has learned. Joining him will be training mate Elladj Balde., another generous soul.

“Elladj has so many different lessons that he has learned than I have,” Firus said. They competed in various countries. They have different technique. He and Balde have set up a lot of seminars already on the east coast of Canada, and they have a few in Ontario. They want to go coast to coast.

“We’re just going to get in our car and drive,” Firus said. “Even if the clubs can’t afford it. It’s not about the money. We’re going to just pop in and say, hey, this is what we’re doing. We want to help.”"

I also found a link to an announcement of a workshop they're doing at CBS Skating Club in Newfoundland in mid-April:

I thought it was pretty cool that they were offering a CanSkate part as well - also that they are including lower level skaters at a lower price. Should be a blast for the kids. (It would even be fun to watch if they end up doing one nearby)

How will Stephen fair in his first JGP season which is coming relatively soon?

Also best of luck to patrick and keegan! clean skates for both! (I hope)

I guess it depends on how much he is able to practice..Brian and parents watch him very carefully and limit what he does and how much time he does it. Those teeny bones lengthen and THEN they strengthen but they are not allowed quads in the short program in juniors and I am not sure what limits are placed on the free. Maybe he will do a new combination...triple axel triple axel in the short.

I think he'll fare pretty well if he skates how he's capable, but of course if he's inconsistent then not as well. Most of the junior guys don't have consistent quads and a lot don't even have consistent 3A, so content wise he's very competitive.

But you're not allowed to repeat 3A in the short, right? And doing 3A3T and 2A in SP just doesn't make sense points-wise, you're better off doing e.g. 3F3T as your combo and 3A as your axel pass (plus the required lutz as your solo jump from steps).

The required solo jump changes from year to year. I don't know what it is next year.

So you can't have 2x 3A in the short even if one is in combination?

No. The only time a jump can be repeated and get credit in the short program is if both jumps are within the jump combination (e.g. 3T+3T or 3Lo+3Lo). A 3A+3A combination would only be possible if someone could somehow pull of a 3 revolution equivalent of this Gary Beacom jump as the first jump, which would be downgraded to the base value of a 2A anyway (assuming it was recognized as an attempt at the first jump in a combination and not just a crazy unlisted jump as a transition) since it is landed forwards, and the skater could still only do a 2A for the axel jump requirement. ;) It would definitely be interesting to see if that could be done, but not a good competitive strategy. :p

Oh yeah, we're talking about the next season. I forgot. It's solo flip then. So the maximal layout would be 3Lz3T, 3F and 3A (unless he can do 3Lz3Lo?)

Well he can do a quad lutz so I gues he can do a 3 lutz and he did triple loop in his long at nats with a 6.41 score..his triple axel got 10.49.

I think he'll do well. I haven't seen him much, but the junior men's field is primed for an influx of young talent. The junior guys are proving so competitive on the senior scene, a slew of them moved up this season. We may see a few back for Junior Worlds, but there is a lot of room on the JGP.
