Mirai Nagasu Cheer thread: Return to Olympus

Triple axel launches Nagasu into history books
Skater joins Ito, Asada as only women to land jump at Olympic Games

http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2018/02/12/266306222

At that low point in her lengthy career, and for much of the next three years, it was almost impossible to imagine Nagasu blissfully soaring the way she did Monday, reaching a height no U.S. woman had attained in the history of Olympic figure skating: landing a clean triple axel.

And not just any triple axel: a brilliantly executed 3 1/2 revolutions in the air, followed by a totally secure landing.

The way PCS are awarded is so subjective. Mirai has been dinged for not emoting - accused of having "stone face" but if you watch her movements, she holds the position to the tip of her fingers and to me that should be counted for something. Mirai skates from the heart, nothing fake about her, no masking - unlike the "over the top" facial expressions that the judges shower high scores upon. If that's Mirai's downfall then I'd much rather watch an "emotionless" (as she's been accused of) Mirai and focus on her movements - all the way to the tip of her hands - and now her 3Axles :cheer2:. So happy for her - and so proud.

I was worried at first when I read an interview with her parents last night and they were still in Arcadia. They wouldn't watch the reporter's video of Mirai's performance, they wanted to wait until they got home. But I'm SO glad they're going to Korea next week. They've sacrificed so much to get her to this point. They deserve to go watch their daughter live out her dream. Her parents are as adorable as she is!

Oh that's too bad they weren't there! I hope Mirai can have 2 kick ass performances in the individual event too. I wonder if she could try to rack up a few more points by sticking her hand over her head on a few jumps, tack on a double toe on something, or backloading the program at this late hour? Watching Zagitova, I'm impressed by her jumping ability but think she could be another Sotnikova, getting her medal and leaving the competitive scene quickly. It would be awesome for Mirai to get another medal.

Mirai only got level 3 on her combo spin and footwork. Don't ask me why. Hopefully, her coach knows and they can fix it before the individual event.

I remember thinking the combo spin went by quickly. Perhaps with all the adrenaline she just didn’t hold a position long enough. I could see how that would happen. Probably good in a way if that is the case. It will help her to remember to count slowly during the individual event.

I am sure I will get killed on here for saying this, but Mirai (even now) has always come across in post-skate interviews as someone very sheltered and probably not mature for her age. I would think she's a teenager but then you find out she's 24 years old. I'm glad to see this is probably an inaccurate perception or at least doesn't tell the whole story. She obviously has some kind of cojones to have come back from 4 years ago, written off by her own federation, basically told to retire and go away, barely continuing on meager resources...and now she's once again on Olympic ice making history! First of all, how cool is that?

And then I saw a video about sex in the Olympic village the other day and she had that innocent teenage response that she wouldn't know because she has a boyfriend. Then you read that article and even see her holding a beer in her hand. Just a cool story. She seems like a well-adjusted, really sweet girl.

She deserved to! But they both skated well.

She did. Gabby was tight and a bunch of her landings lacked their usual flow. Kurt talked about it bit during the replays after Gabby’s skate. If I had to bet, I would still put my money on Gabby in the individual event. Both have benefited greatly by skating in the team event. Mirai because I think the judges will look differently at her now, and Gabby because she has had such a season of problems with illness and surgery it was good to get out and get run that program one more time before the big show.

Will be interesting to see if Mirai’s success with the 3A will encourage Gabby to go for the 4T next season. Can you imagine both of them at the same event? Excitement!

I am not too worried about a repeat of the Lipnitskaya history because Mirai is older and more media-experienced and Tom Z will help keep her focused.

No worries there. Mirai already knows how to handle being dumped ... She slayed those biatches with her blades!

Duhamel especially jumped up and I almost expected her team to have to restrain her.. LOL..

Yeah, well Meghan knows how hard it is to do that jump even when thrown!

I don't really know how to post tweets, but I am trying to post one from 9NewsSports Denver on Mirai's job before she was landing 3As. Fabulous pix! Mirai's comment: Gotta pay for skating somehow.

OK, the second was more official. Hopefully one works.

Ummm ... The men are taking notice.

LOL Are these photos real or photoshopped?

Sweet Mirai, baby girl you are forever an Olympic medallist! :respec::rockstar::cheer2::cheer:Many had you in 5th in the Team Ladies FS, but you came in a solid second, with a personal best, and beating out awesome Gabby, and the ethereal Carolina with her mighty PCS scores! And you made Olympic history! You will always be the FIRST American woman to land a triple Axel in Olympic competition! The FIRST female skater to land all 8 triple jumps cleanly in an Olympic FS. Others one day will follow, but you my Warrior Ice Queen will ALWAYS be the first. I could not be prouder than if my own daughter had done it. You're a ROCK STAR!! I've watched that elegant, glorious triple Axel maybe a dozen times already. I am at peace now that you didn't make the Sochi Games, because if you had, I don't think you would have gone so hard for that Axel! And GUUURLLL!! You ROTATED ALL YOUR JUMPS!! Like Adam, I was in tears at the end. Actually, I quite disgraced myself when I saw the tears in beautiful Adam's eyes! :wuzrobbed I didn't scream so as not to scare the family but under my breath I said 'YES! YES! YES! And I quietly celebrated your victory! I will remember your Olympic Team FS forever! As well as that of all of Team USA's, including Nathan. He had to go out there first and attempt Quad jumps at a crazy hour he wasn't used to as well as most of the other top men in the SP. He fought through - as you did these past four years! You have both had my heart since you were children so I'm feeling a little bit maternal about this. And about Adam! I was overjoyed that almost ALL of my favorite skaters were on this U.S. squad (alas Jason, but he's got his Olympic medal!). You, Nathan, Maia, Alex, and Alexa and Chris! And Bradie is quickly stealing my heart too! I asked the skate gods to smile down upon all of you! And I think the late great legend himself, one of my skate heroes, Axel Paulsen would have been pleased with that sparkling triple Axel of yours! Enjoy the rest of the ride at these Magical Games sweetie! All my babes have a medal so anything else that may come during the Individual Events - like another Olympic medal - will just be chocolate mousse with whipped cream on top! :summer: Love you guys! And special shout out to Team Canada who cheered as much as Team USA when you landed that Axel!! What great sportsmanship!! I'm so happy they got the gold because now Patrick Chan, one of the greats, can retire with his elusive Olympic gold medal. My heart has broken one too many times at seeing the great ones not realize even an Olympic medal of any color, never mind gold! But now my heart is full!!

That is all. :D

There's a lovely full page spread color picture of Mirai on the Olympics pull-out sports section of my local paper. She's yelling 'Yes' in full glory right after her fp skate. When she landed the 3-axel, I was half watching while posting in the AdaRipp thread. I looked up and saw Mirai land the 3-axel, heard the crowd roar and I immediately screamed spontaneously. Oh yes, Mirai, Mirai! You did it guurl!!! :respec: :encore:

Here's more articles celebrating our and Darian Weiss' Queen Nagasu!

Mirai posted a couple of more vids on her IG story! Hurry and watch them! I did download them since they disappear after 24 hours. She's so cute while watching herself on the Today show! As she's shown nailing her glorious triple Axel she says "ME! ME ME ME! I can't believe it!".

She's hysterical while watching the Today commentators talk about the alleged 'tattoo' on her leg! When they do a close up of the athletic tape on her inner thigh, she says 'Oh no! You can see my va-jay jay!' She's a hoot!

Maybe it is zoomed into the area, but it will never be like what Katarina showed in 1988 :yikes: ... Because the ISU made a rule after that about wearing tights!

None the less, candid Mirai is hilarious :biggrinbo

So, maybe this is only because I follow Mirai on twitter and she has been re-tweeting everything about her, but right now (at least according to my Twitter feed) Mirai IS social media! Seriously, the scroll of tweets never ends!

Agreed, it was wild just how many people who I follow for politics or pop culture were talking about Mirai (and Adam). They also talked about Mirai's triple axel on ABC and NBC nightly news last night. I think that it's so great that a lot of the stories are about Mirai and Adam's friendship. The story of them climbing to her roof and eating In and Out four years ago is honestly so beautiful. Even though they are not skaters who are winning all of the time, their skating and stories deserve recognition, and I'm so glad that they get to experience this together. Also, apparently they have matching tattoos?! I never knew that!

Phil Hersh updated his Ice Network story to note that Mirai is the first woman to land eight clean triple jumps in an Olympic free skate. The "NHL Ice Girl" story is another story I never knew about, but it makes sense that it was during the 15-16' season, since that's when she started college (I remember when she won the collegiate championships and said that she wanted and needed the scholarship prize money).

What, you don't think Mirai could look that fab? I think figure skaters clean up (or strip down) pretty doggone well!
Wow So the NHL Ice Girl story is not a fake news? I thought I'm a Mirai stalker but there was a stuff that I didn't know at all. She looks awesome in the photos for sure! :inavoid:And maybe Hersh read this thread before he updated his article re first ever clean 8-triple program at Olys thing. :D
