From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

Russian interview with T/M, right after Euroes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeYPigSR8yw

I can only understand about 10% of it (try the auto translate, it's hilarious), but it seems like some basic stuff. How they met, when they started skating, falls, injuries, etc. Anyways, they're cute kids and seem like nice people. I wish they could have competitive programs that show that they do have actual personalities.

The news about Inna Goncharenko (coach of Voronov, Kovtun and formerly Radionova) leaving CSKA was sort of buried on page 56 among the Stolbova and Bukin talk.

Here's what she had to say - "Yes, I no longer work in the club. I don't want to get into the details which prompted me to make such decision, however, I do not consider it possible to work in such conditions where there is zero support from both the rink administration and the federation of figure skating. I cannot say whether I will stay working in Russia, although I'm ready to consider options regarding my employment here. At the same time, there is a possibility of me leaving the country because such offers also exist."

Voronov's statement - "I'm still thinking about it, I need time [to figure out who to work with next]. I have clear plans for my future athletic career. In regard to this issure (Goncharenko leaving), I'm not thinking about it yet. First off I plan to skate next season, plan to get new programs. We have to see what the situation will be with Worlds and if I have a chance to compete there. I always hope for the best."

Kovtun - "Yesterday (24.01) I was at Inna Germanovna's house. Her husband was there as well and we were in a positive mood, no pain and sorrow. An Honorary coach of Russia will find a job for sure. I support her and will stay with her in any case. For now, I only go to the gym and have no other training. If I get on the ice it is only to stand around so that I don't lose balance."

Well this is really...:wuzrobbed. What sucks the most is that CSKA has recently built and opened a new, high-quality rink in their main camp. Right next to their other rink where everyone trained before. This new rink isn't even used full-time and was sometimes seen empty.

So they have the money for that! Yet they can't (or dont want to?!) support Goncharenko who is arguably their best singles coach, no worse than Buyanova. Oh wait, silly me lol. Buyanova is "favored" I guess. This was rumored and may be just that but how do you explain the total lack of suport for Inna???

Good job CSKA! :lynch:

And good job FFKR!

edit: BTW, there was a long article with Goncharenko from circa 13/14 where she ALSO mentioned problems with funds. This was before Radio went senior... This was before Goncharenko was a name. Sigh.

Mozer: Stolbova-Klimov will not participate in OG even if they will be invited in the last minute, they are not ready to do it after humiliation. :(

I really hope their families and friends will help them not to feel this way.

I can't even imagine what Stolbova Klimov must be feeling right now. I hope there will be better days ahead for them.

Hugs to Ksenia and Fedor (and Ivan)

The less Averbukh choreo out there the better. I just can't stand his programs anymore. So much cringe. In German we have a word for the feeling he arouses in me, "Fremdscham" (= feeling embarassed for someone/something else).

Amen!!

I am assuming Bukin is out, as on ISU team event entry list, it's Z/G.
Can they still change that?

Like Belbin Agosto and White all say in their commentary if bobrova had learned to skate the team may have been successful!
Well they did not say that... But they did criticize her posture a lot (They think Stepanova/Bukin are the better team too).

Quite interesting interview with Bobrova/Soloviev. They comment on the Medvedeva/Zagitova rivalry ...

"Rivalry" is such a mild word to use to describe the reality, when these two girls are ready to strangle each other.... :D. Few fotos from 2 days back, from the practice rink, taken by hidden "fan camera".... It's getting really bad between these two.....:slinkaway

"ri·val·ry
ˈrīvəlrē/
noun
noun: rivalry; plural noun: rivalries
  1. competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field."
All in a right context... Med/Zag competing for same title, but "rivalry for medals" include more than 2 of them; there are Japanese, Canadians and Italian aiming for medals and are rivals to Med/Zag. To narrow it to "Med/Zag" rivalry, when girls time after times said they are not competing against each other, but against their own high goals, is done for no reason but to cause disturbance between two girls. And that is exactly what is attempted by many.

Although some competitions don't seem to have any rivalries, because the competitors are saying politely, "You take it," "No, you," "Please, go ahead." (Thinking of the Mens FS in Sochi, for example) :)
Are you describing British people? Outside the bus - “after you”, “oh, no, after you”, “no, really, after you, I insist”, “oh, alright then, if you are sure...”

Has Russia announced who will be skating in the Team competition? I assume B&S will skate both and ladies will be split. I think they may split the men, to conserve their energy, which means T&M may have to skate both, and then get ready for the individual event just one ir two days later. May be Sui Han were right in skipping the team event.

Sui/Han can easily skip the team event because China is chance-less and has zero chance of winning a medal. If China was a medal contender you can guarantee the Chinese fed. would make them skate at least one segment. No way would they be allowed to skip. Russia on the other hand is a gold medal contender so T/M, as the Russia #1, have to play their part.

Man I am sad. I thought something would come through at the last moment somehow.

Even if it did, I think it's too late. There is no way the RSF will replace A&R or Z&G this close to the competition. It is sad that S&K and S&B could not compete in the Olympics. What bothers me the most is the IOC never disclosed a reason for not inviting, nor provided proof if wrong doing by these athletes.

I heard about the appeals but isn't it too late already? The IOC didn't leave much time for the athletes to do something about it.

So I am resigned to watching whoever is skating. I love them all.

I fear for victims of the crossfire.

On the other forum their saying T/M won't skate in the team event free, Z/E will.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were on the fence about it earlier but after Kolyada bombed in the men's event and gold is most unlikely to happen it made the decision easy. Let T/M rest for the pairs event and just be happy with a medal of any color.

Happy Z/E will get an Olympic medal although kind of sad to see Russia throw in the towel so fast and that means both Med. and Zagitova won't leave Korea with gold medals. The stakes just got even higher in the ladies event though

They had no choice but to throw in the towel. Things went downhill very fast when Kolyada bombed in the SP-the very first event. OTOH Canada did very well, making it impossible for OAR to recover.

The Russian fed. certainly can't be happy with Kolyada at this moment. The pressures (as if he needed anymore) in the individual will be even bigger

It's far too early but I wonder what would happen if Aliev were to beat Kolyada in the individual event like he did at Euros. He would have to really perform well at worlds to redeem himself otherwise it surely makes his days as defacto Russian #1 highly questionable. I would love to be a fly on the wall at a meeting of the Russian fed. :smokin:

One possibility is that Kolyada melted under the Olympic pressure when he first stepped on Olympic ice. It is possible that he may recover by the time the I.E. starts. Right now, if I were the RSF, I wouldn't want to send him back for the LP.
