If you're in the area and you've never gone to Skate Detroit, I highly recommend it. You get to see skaters from all different levels in the sport. There's no charge for admission. You can come and go as you wish. Occasionally, you'll turn around and find yourself standing next to some big-name skating star. It's a great experience. But beware of the skatemoms! If they find out you're just there as a fan of the sport and aren't related to anyone, they'll start trash talking their kid's rivals.

Ann Arbor Art Fair is 7/19-7/22, so if you need a break from skating, drive an hour west!

It's much nicer to visit this part of the country in the summer so when you come back for Nationals, you can say "Oh, this looked so much nicer when everything was green and the air didn't hurt my face!"

Yes, but the difference is Joe Louis Arena is gone and the main arena will be Little Caesars Arena, and the secondary rink will be Detroit Skating Club (about 25 miles away from downtown) rather than Cobo Hall.

I don't think the venues themselves had anything to do with the attack. It would have happened no matter what city had hosted Nationals.

As a Detroiter, I remember one of my initial reactions to the attack was that I hoped it wasn't someone from around here, especially not a black man from around here. (Some of the early news reports had described Nancy's attacker as a black man.) Dennis Archer had literally just been sworn in as Detroit's new mayor after twenty years of Coleman Young. I felt the Detroit police did excellent work after the attack. The fact that Shane Stant managed to get so close to Nancy was not their fault.

Guess I didn't think the venues had anything to do with the attack either. I hope that since Joe Louis can't be used and probably Cobo won't be used fans will not constantly be asking where it happened and what doors were used, etc.

Cobo has been renovated since then, so the layout might not be the same anyhow. The new arena is far enough away that skating fans who were here in 1994 shouldn't experience flashbacks. The whole downtown looks different than it did back then, especially the area around Little Caesar's Arena. That neighborhood used to be the worst one in the city, but almost everything that hasn't been torn down has been renovated and gentrified. The old flophouse hotels are now loftominiums.
