Increasingly likely “Russia” will be banned from Pyeongchang

Russian main tv channels showed few international magazines covers and titles with Medvedeva’s name on it, as if she is one of those athletes who doped and was charged

Haven’t seen those titles by my one, but if it’s true :slinkaway

My prediction: If living in a 'closed city' is accepted giving athletes plenty of warning before random tests then there will be an escalation of athletes living in closed cities.
Your prediction is lovely. Do you imagine what `closed city' is and how easy it is to move there?

I read elsewhere that there is a real fear that even if clean athletes get to compete under a neutral flag, it will be discouraged (if not by official boycott by Russia) as many Russians may risk public shaming if they choose to compete under the neutral flag, and that Medvedeva and others have already said they will only compete under the Russian flag or they won't compete at all.

Definitely. I don’t expect putin to flip flop or order a boycott he may say if an athlete wants to humiliate Russia by competing as neutral they can

It was streamed live several hours ago - direct link to watch (27 mins.): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nldxx9nFNA8

We're just under 2 hours away from Thomas Bach's press conference (I can start a new thread when the news is announced).

Perhaps you could start the thread with link before the news is announced so people will have an easier time of watching the press conference live.

Russia's channel 1 (former ORT) has just reported that the Russian delegation, including Medvedeva, was not allowed to attend the negotiation room. They had their cellphones taken anyway. They were unable to deliver their speeches.

edit: sorry, no links just yet. This is straight form the TV.

Mean while in the Russian TVshows Rodchenkov is shown as a complete nut case (he frankly sounds like one). On one hand they do not claim the Russian athletes were clean, on the other - Rodchenkov is not quite a figure on whom the whole process should depend.

Well, he did seem a bit crazy in Icarus, and certainly did some stupid things (ie. showed a guy exactly how to dope and get away with it). In fact, it seems like other (anti)-doping experts knew he was the only one crazy enough to put himself out there like that in a wide-release documentary.
On the other hand, he did seem very paranoid about getting caught, so all the evidence he presented - the records, the account, the detailed journals was likely the result of all that paranoia. He made trails of evidence and records to back himself up no matter what happened, but particularly because he thought he would be killed and thus evidence would be needed that he didn't need to be alive to give. Based on his behavior in the documentary, I would be 100% willing to believe that those records are accurate.

So yes, if they want to present him like a nutcase, he is very obsessive and paranoid. But that doesn't mean the evidence he's presenting is wrong. Plenty of people keep meticulous records. Lawyers, Doctors, Nurses, etc. all keep records of their work that detailed because they are concerned of legal consequences. And you wouldn't consider them nutcases, right?

Sorry but may I ask you to explain what a "closed city" actually is? The first time I heard the term was on this thread and I haven't got a clue what is is and don't like to comment or judge when I have no idea what I am talking about. Smart asses pls butt out here because I am trying to be educated here not entertained. tks

It’s a city that deals has many people who deal with a Lot of national security or military issues and you need special permission to enter. Like a military base but an entire city version.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that someone isn't out you get you. :D

If anyone wants to watch the official press conference with IOC president Tomas Bach, its here:

Preliminary unofficial reports like insidethegames.biz say that Russia can go as neutrals; ROC was banned. But I suggest we get the official info in the link above.

edit: started literally 30 sec. ago.

It's a city where travel in and out (for residents and non-residents) is restricted (and non-citizens are most often not allowed in at all) usually for reasons of military or other state secrecy I think it started in the Soviet period but I might be wrong about that. I don't know if they never stopped or if Putin revived them...

Thank-you Mafke

True ..as his co-dopper died under suspicious circumstances as he started to work on a book...(used a computer not handwritten) which seems to marry up with outright murders & suspicious accidents which seems to dog anyone who crosses or competes with Putin. I would be scared sh**itless.

Glad that the clean athletes wont be sidelined by a total ban, though they wont be able to see their flag or hear their national anthem if taking gold

Neutral Athletes will be

Best news of the day: former minister of Russian sport Mutko and his assistant Nagornykh were permanently banned by the IOC. They will not be allowed to participate in future Olympics in any way.

These are the highest Russian sport officials. They were unable to protect Russian athletes in Rio, they had plenty of time to solve issues regarding Pyeongchang. Yet all we've ever heard from them is rhetoric, whining and moaning about "eevile westerners", proofless accusations of political pressure, conspiracies regarding the undermining of Putin's presidential campaign, etc. If they had the will to better resolve these scandals then they would've done so. Had they now power or ability to do so? Then why did they get to hold these positions in the first place!? They failed their jobs terribly and if the Russian government didn't want to remove (what seems to be "their bastards", because they should've gone after Rio), then I'm certainly glad the IOC got them away from the Olympics.

And so do many Russians if upvotes are anything to go by:

I don't know why a second thread on this subject was started, but as it is more focused on the current news, I'm going to close this one.
