The Dance Hall 5: Ice Dance Fans 2017-2018

Sorry, all of you are so ridiculous with the things you're throwing out - "unforgivable", "heinous", "isn't forgivable" - and all of that about music/program choices in ice dancing . Sorry once again, I just couldn't help myself. After all, it's all so totally subjective - all just a matter of taste (not good or bad, just a different taste). But all of you are acting as if your personal taste is the only right one and an indisputable gauge of whether something is good or not.

Everyone is just stating their opinion, like the majority of the posts re: programs this year. Which is fine as we are all on fans in a fan board. It's more of a problem if the judges apply this same sort of subjectivity when actually scoring a program.

I’m going to be honest and think fans have such high expectations and don’t consider how difficult the requirements in the SD are these days to allow teams to have the freedom to dance like we want them to. Like hip hop last year I also wonder how much we all really know about Latin dancing.

That's what I've been saying this entire time. People have some fantasies of Latin looking like what they do at home or in the club, and that's virtually impossible to do on the ice with the SD requirements as they are. Plus the fact that this year, the rules only require the Latin rhythm to be used, but not Latin music. Maybe the problem is that it shouldn't be called Latin at all, but rather something else.

Their last Marc Anthony piece is a salsa, a Latin pop version of salsa, but a salsa...I wish it was like 30 seconds to one minute longer though.
According to their bio, the last piece is a samba. It's the first piece, Aguanile, that is a salsa.

Plus the fact that this year, the rules only require the Latin rhythm to be used, but not Latin music.
That's what's been happening with each theme/pattern since they introduced the SD. And USFS rules for testing and the lower levels basically say that the skaters' choice of music just has to conform to the rhythm (and I think can be 1 count off?). I assume they're trying to make dance more DWTS-like, i.e. appeal to the masses by allowing more creativity and variation.

I was at the Olympics for the OD in 2010 and at SC this season for the Latin SD. I loved the OD segment and had a good time for the Latin. The last thing I want are more swing dances and tangoes.

If people have fond memories of the tango osp at the Calgary Olympics, good for you. I don't need that again.

I think we'll have Tango next year for the SD, won't we? :saint:

Brace yourselves people.

I'm not acting like anything. That is just my opinion. This^ is just your warped interpretation of it.

I bet we’re going to get DWTS’s like tangos to “Latch” or something.
You mean to break up all the Libertango, La Cumparsita, Adiós Nonino and Assassin's Tango we'll be hearing? I'll just be interested to see how many people go with El Tango de Roxanne, after such a Moulin Rouge heavy year.

Can't compare scores between competitions blah blah blah, but Papadakis/Cizeron at CoC beat Virtue/Moir on what they got for TES and PCS at NHK for the free dance. I think it does pretty much reflect the reality about who has the better free dance too.

Imagine just enjoying how your favourite team skates when you could obsess about the meaning of 0.50 of a point? What insanity! :drama:
I'm starting to think allezfred is a lunatic. Who contradict himself in a couple of minutes? How low can he get?

Serious question, how are you a mod again? aren't mods suppose to be well you know...not be blatantly biased pot stirrers that are rude to users. You are supposed to stop fights not create them by provoking fans. do your job and stop making fun of people.

Since you only arrived here two seconds ago, let me give you an FSU history lesson. Admins here are allowed have opinions. Always have been.

So you coming in here and telling everyone how FSU should be run? Kind of rude, to be honest. ;)

Actually what you do is not practicing free speech, but abusing power and bullying people. It's one thing to state your opinion on skaters. But coming into fan thread and laughing at posters are clearly crossing the line. And you have been doing that for a long time. So really no excuses for the board to allow such things.

Total out of the subject but my favourite FD this season is the Danes'. Perfect program, cohesive and very well choregraphed, they're dancing to the music, music which is evolving constantly yet staying in the theme. A pleasure to watch.
Isn't it wonderful? Gorgeous skating, great lifts and the perfect level of performance execution (i.e. no overkill). Although admittedly I have not overly scrutinized their levels, I feel like they deserve better scores.

Yes I love them too, I'm already happy they got 99, because frankly I couldn't have stood another competition where they are given a miserable 92. Ugh.
Funny thing : Péchalat thinks Sorensen is a bit bland.... Girl, I don't think we're looking at the same guy. He's :smokin::smokin:.

Also, just after them there were the ukranians : she LOVED them. I have a soft spot for them too but I think they have OTT lifts. It's too much... (and weirdly enough the lifts are why Pechalat loved them hahaha... anyway sometimes I feel she's almost judging a team on how spectacular their lifts are... *cough* Chock/Bates *cough*.)

You know I always said how great that Nathalie wasn't biased towards French skaters...
However, she can be completely blind towards Igor's teams (Fabian is a coach with him).

Thank you for sharing this! I don't ever get to hear Péchalat's commentary. I agree with YOU over her, haha. Nothing bland about Nik! And re Ukranians, I appreciate her opinion but I think their lifts and programs are too packed and for me it looks laboured and without flow. And I usually try focus on the skating the most but I found their costumes too much as well. Distracting. :( But certainly, they have lots of promise :)

Yes I mean of course they are a bit biased towards PC, but Péchalat is always talking about how they could do more spectacular lifts. Lol
And yes, Igor's teams.. maybe also because they went to train with him during their last year? I don't know, I don't get it.

The Ukrainians are never boring, which is why I like them, they do a lot of crazy stuff to cover for their weaker basics. I do wish they were a little less "busy," I especially thought it was way too busy in the SD and that they didn't continue the "feel" of the rest of their program in that lift which bothered me.

I really love both of the Dane's programs this year, the SD and the FD are quite nice and I think the way some of their lifts are timed with the music in the FD are very very effective. It's such a shame that along with giving back the Olympic spot they don't even have 2 GPs.

Maybe I can tell you more about her opinions... let's see :
-so like I said she finds Sorensen a bit bland but she likes their choice of program this year, she thinks they found something there (--> the hotness!)
- C/L : she said it shows that it's early in the season, the music sounded grander than them sometimes. But she likes the choice of music (apparently they chose it to represent the best of Italy at the Olympics, she gets it she said, as she and Fabian wanted to do it as well in Sochi). She loves their lifts (OMG suprise!). But, she says they skate small.

-S/K : can't remember everything but she was positive, a lot better than Minsk. Alban Preaubert (commenting with her) loves Victoria (lol) and said that though Nikita is inconsistent, he is a great skater.

-Coomes/Buckland : very interesting program in her opinion. She says they lost levels on their lifts because some features were missing (difficult exit?), and generally speaking the technical elements lacked polish...
But she says the components were good so they can improve for next time.

H/D : she loves this FD, very impressed. She thinks they are positionning themselves for the bronze medal. To her it's the "surprise" of the year, like the Shibs with Coldplay in 2016 had been.

V/M: she loves their programs. She mentionned Tessa's mistake in the Step sequence and shaky first twizzle.

I think that's all!

Excellent commentary by Charlie White. Great talk about some technical points. I advise you all to watch it. :)
Charlie's wonderful. I agree with him on the final lift, it's beautiful. Disagree that you can't take your eyes off V/M, and that's exactly my problem: when I first saw them live, I was completely engrossed. Here I just wanted them to get on with it. They really don't need to prove that they're more than the "young couple in love" team (which was never a fair critique to begin with), and even if they did want to prove it, there are better ways. Moulin Rouge is difficult technically, but they're so much better artistically than the material they have this season.

She's in a relationship with a movie star. Her standards may have shifted :D

I like the Danes. It's really too bad that Denmark makes it so difficult to get citizenship...
