I was sitting in the first row for the Gala practice and they definitely came with a general idea layout for the EX, but I could hear them choreographing different sections from where I was sitting. They had their music played twice and stayed on the ice tweaking things after all the other skaters had left and the security was kicking out the fans.

That's so cool :) Thanks for sharing!

I'm hoping those who have lots of experience watching competitions live will provide some advice. I would like to attend the Canadian FS Championships. This would be the first time for me watching a FS competition live and it is the last chance for me to watch V/M live. The tickets that are left are listed in the link below. Should I get tickets that are on the same side as the judges even though it's further back (close to the last row I think) vs closer to the front but on the opposite side? What about the end zones or the corners? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

My preference is the opposite side of the judges and as close as you can get. Ends and corners would be a last resort for me.

During the Vancouver olympics, there was an article discussing recommended seat locations for various sports. Athletes were asked to make suggestions and provide their reasons. For figure skating, Joannie Rochette was chosen. In her opinion, the best seats were behind the judges about half way up. She explained the skaters programs are designed to be viewed from the judges side. Too far up, the skaters look like ants. Too close, you can't get an overall impression of the program. However, I would add there may be other considerations. At SCI2010 and SCI2016, three big TV cameras were located above/behind the judges, which must have been an obstructed view for people sitting in that area.

It also depends on your preferences. Do you like seeing the skaters up close? Do you want to see the K&C? Note: at SCI2016, the K&C backdrop was turned to face the photographers. People on the opposite side had no view despite being close, because the curved shape of the backdrop hid the skaters. Sitting up close in a rink middle section requires constantly turning your head side-to-side as skaters move from end to end. Also, you may get people leaning forward blocking your view. If that annoys you, end seats may be better. First row seats are good if you like to watch skaters up close, but you may get colder feet since you are also sitting closer to that big block of ice they skate on.

In the end, you will need to decide your personal priorities, keep in mind the pros & cons of each location, and make your choice.

Judges side definitely. I have been opposite side and ends and for full perspective they kind of sucked... if seeing skating live can suck?

All the best- first comps are so exciting. Mine was 1998 Canadians

My preference is judges side halfway up or high enough that you see the whole program layout.
Are we allowed to post pics on here @marbri? If yes, I would post a few pics showing where I have been seated.....I always buy all event passes. I like to face the judges myself. I also like to be close to the ice, although I appreciate @rvi5's comments and Joannie's :)

Thanks for answering my question about the ex program. It's always great to hear the perspective of people who saw everything live. (I'm in Europe, so unfortunately I have no chance to see Tessa and Scott live this season or maybe even in the foreseeable future.) The ex performance is even more impressive considering the limited time they had and that it was planned by them. They should consider following in MP's footsteps ;).

I was in the second row opposite the judges and loved my seat. I could see the expression on their faces. Normally I get 5 or 7 th row. I felt drawn into the programs.
Yes, I love 1st or 2nd row for lots of reasons but especially because Scott talks a lot to Tessa during their performances and when you are close to the ice you can hear him. It's awesome. You can often hear him on the videos of their performances as well.

they were amazing at SCI, the Olympic gold should already be theirs I am just worried of what Didier might do at the Olympics knowing his shady past, I have nothing against the French team but their SD is embarrassing, and their fd to moonlight sonata is average, when I think of that piece of music I think of Gordeeva and Grinkov and they pale in comparison.

I like up close centre also. The first two competition I attended (SCI and Nationals), we were first row near centre rink. The first competition was good, but it was at the second we had the people next to us leaning forward. The person I was with politely asked them not to do that, but they sometimes forgot.

At the 3rd competition, we were closer to the K&C in the 2nd row. I think I would have preferred the ends instead since we couldn’t see the K&C anyway, although I have never sat there or on the judges side. I like to face the judges myself, since there are no 1st row near centre seats on the judges side.

For dance, VM, I prefer the side opposite the judges a few rows back so there aren't cameras blocking. I find the judges side is often blocked with the cameras but I do sit on the judge's side for the practices to see the other side!

Thanks everyone for the advice on seating (love my fellow V/M fans). The pickings are slim at this point - anything that's not the at the end or corners are farther back (row 18/19 for both judge's side and on opposite side). The closest seats to the rink are at the end and the corners away from the K&C (row 8/9). Availability in the K&C corners is somewhere in between. What can I say - it looks like Canadians love their figure skating!

I guess I'll have to weigh the pros and cons of farther back but on the straight vs closer but at the end or corners. I will just have to be more organized and purchase early the next time I decide to attend a live event.

I was sitting at the end during the European Championships last year. My problem was similar to yours - tickets were already sold out everywhere else. So judging according to my experience, I'd definitely recommend the ends. If you happen to be sitting somewhere in between or closer to the rink, it's not such a bad place. ;) The visibility is fine; every time skaters skate closer to your side is superb - you're able to see them quite in details. Yet when they're skating in the middle or on the opposite side, you can still see them and enjoy the program. :)

Until recently the Phoenix Art Museum had a large board - very visible while driving - about an exhibit 'Virtue and Valor'. I read it almost always as 'Virtue and Moir'. This went on for at least a month before I started reading it right. :)

Wait P&C got 81 at Cup of China? Lol how..I am literally stunned because there is no way that SD is anywhere close to V&M..they skate to Ed Sheeran for god sake, it's Latin theme..& Gabrielle just cannot come close to Tessa's ability, this score for P&C worries me cause that should not have been that close imo..just no lol

The Grand Prix Final should be very interesting.

Saw the results for both segments for the COC and was like what? These 2 teams don't have the same level or quality at all ! Very upsetting getting frustrated with figure skating it better not be fixed or I might stop watching it altogether after the Olympics! Seriously I'm getting very tired of all this... I hate injustice! I loved how the judging at Skate Canada was on point though!I guess we'll have to see!

The conclusion we can draw from each having their debut now on the GP is that the battle between them will come down to levels. That is what the judges are showing us. It doesn't matter what team or program you prefer, this looks like it will be decided on levels.

So here´s hoping for a tech panel at GPF and Olympics that has a Canadian and a French member (and some third neutral random, not the US )

This. The judges have made it clear that they're both going to get sky high component scores, and it's going to come down to who skates the cleanest. Obviously, I find V/M superior or else I wouldn't be posting in this thread over others, but they know more than anyone else that they're going to have to hit their levels and nail everything. I think they're up for it.

That said, like last year, it all changes a bit when they compete head to head with the same panels. As a V/M fan, I'm not worried at all that the writing is on the wall against them (like Sochi, where it was clear the judges had them marked for silver no matter what they did). The gold isn't going to be handed to them, nor should it, but to me, it looks very much within their grasp.

Well the British Eurosport commentators said that V&M are in a league of their own & they can't see these programs being beat so not sure what the judges are trying to prove at Cup of China..probably when they are together in a comp we will see V&M seperate themselves from P&C..

i would be actually surprised if they're allowed a second oly gold.
they won once already, the second time it was US turn, next will be France's.
levels, bobbles, performance in the day etc etc...dont matter.the real issue is 'geo-political'. Gailauget wants the gold for France. he even twitted about it.
in ice dance is much easier to pretend one team is better than it really is. just hand out record scores. only a few know something about ice dance. judges and feds are free to make their deals.
i'll just keep adoring VM, but since i'm fed up by the score situation and the nonsense i see on boards this will be my last post on fsu. much love to you :) marty

Haha P&C got 119 & set another FD world record today in Cup of China..you have got to be kidding me, this is ridiculous, I may not be watching if this crap is allowed to continue..
