Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

I missed the live stream, but Kelsey Wong scored 60.43 with clean short at the Golden West competition last night. Free is later today. That's a higher SP score than others who have had international assignments confirmed. I hope Skate Canada is paying attention ;)

Quoting you here just to reprint your post! Kelsey is one of the most underrated of the Candian ladies IMHO. She also scored this score OUTSIDE OF CANADA. I hope SC takes notice. Senior skaters should be competing outside of their Section with a different set of judges.

I take the rule as preserving them from psychological and mental point of view from overwhelming events like Worlds and the Big O. Just look what it did to Lipnitskaya and a few others. Too much pressure, too young. I'd increase Olympics age by one more year if it were from me. Keep them mentally sound!

Except that there is no proof that it is protecting skaters from anything. One or two anecdotes do not mean anything. I could find just as many for skaters who competed young and were fine. What Lipnitskaya is going through is a tragedy, but correlation does not equal causation and it is just as likely she would have ended up in the same place without going to the Olympics, but she would have ended up there without an Olympic gold medal and without the financial resources that medal allowed her to earn.

Yup always felt with the right coaching staff Kelsey could be a top 5 skater in Canada. Always felt she was constantly overlooked by Skate Canada infavour of Joannes other pupils.

When you are young and a middle-pack skater, you can get along fine. When the pressure and all eyes are on you at 15, it's a different thing. And you know the 15 yo, if she makes it to the Olympics, is hot stuff. (Yeah, not all at the time, but most of the time). There was that sad long documentary on Yuna Kim and her post-Olympics depression, Baiul, Lipinsky, Flatt, etc. It is not just skating. It is the same with the young new hot stuff teenage singer, actor or musician. It is about one own personality not being forged fully, not knowing who you are and thinking you are only your wins. Not all go crazy, but a good amount do go through some kind of dark passage.

Not just other of Joanne's students, but other BC skaters. She has, IMHO, some of the best skating skills of all the BC senior women and she does not tend to get credit for them. She has been trying and landing Lutzes and triple triples for a few years as well. I think she needs better packaging and choreography, but that is no excuse for the PTB at SC overlooking her. You cannot underestimate the power that being an SC darling can do for someone's skating, and conversely, the negative affect that getting hosed on second mark, especially SS, can do to a skater's confidence.

Skate canada does have it's pets for sure...hopefully new blood there will eliminate this or at least tone it down....Does anyone have a vid of Kelsey's skate. Would really like to see it so I can form my own opinion. My trust in Canada's domestic judges has reached an all-time low since challenge last year.

Cotop was assigned to JGP #6 in Poland. Here's hoping she has a better short program...Tons of subs are listed. Including Gran even though she hasn't skated this summer at all.

I wonder who will get the last JGP spot.

Daleman is going to Finlandia. The only other senior international on the Skate Canada assignments page is the Warsaw Cup and I sure hope they send a lady there. Interestingly there have been no subs listed for any of the senior internationals so far.

IMO Wong and Tobin both deserve to get something based on their summer results. Let's see if Skate Canada agrees!

Of course we are still waiting for the Skate Canada International host pick to be posted. It's very likely to be Austman but I would like to see it made official!

I also really liked the look of Emilie Decelles.

That is a wonderful score for Wong, and hopefully that trend continues throughout the remainder of the season. I've always enjoyed her skating and she is extremely athletic, reminding me a lot like Daleman in some aspects.

Wong was assigned to Ondrej Nepala last year and did not have a very successful outing:

So to say she is overlooked isn't entirely accurate. She received a non-host/overseas CS assignment when others like Austman did not. And as she failed to qualify out of Challenge last year, she is most likely being scrutinized a bit harder compared to others already assigned to the first set of CS events and with solid Summer Series results. There is still an open assignment to Warsaw in November (based on the International Assignments page on the Skate Canada website)

I personally hope that she has her best season yet and using the next 4 year cycle to make her mark.

Wow Schumacher ended up fourth after the short program in Riga. This is one of the best Canadian ladies short program performances on the JGP in some time. Now it will be difficult to maintain this rank after the free because the two Japanese skaters right behind her had major mistakes. But still a great debut and I hope she will skate well being in the final flight for the free.

What a lovely short program in her junior grand prix debut for Alison Schumacher!

I really enjoyed her short program, great choreography and transition. She is an aerial touch to her skating, she floats on the ice. I guess with time she will be able to feel and interpret the music more. (A trivial comment, but I'd like another color to her dress, somehting brighter)

I'm torn because I think the "Summertime" program could have been really good if given a chance to grow. But on the other hand, her Edith Piaf program is one of my favourite of all time and she got such huge scores with it last year. I wonder if she'll rework it to do the triple lutz in the second half.

I guess we'll know soon because the Autumn Classic is next week!!

Good. My only two thoughts are:

1) She only started retraining this last Thursday and as such will be competing it on 2 weeks practice? Wonder what forced the decision last week rather than say after the summer comps or even right after HPC.

2) Is the lutz going into the second half? I am of two minds of this. I think it's an technical increase that she needs to make, but on the other hand I would hate for any of the original structure of the choreography to be changed. It was so beautifully matched with the music as it was that I have a hard time imagining what they could do to it to get the lutz into the second half without totally rearranging everything.

Good for her. Good luck in your international senior debut, Larkin!

I hope she has a great skate, but this isn't her international debut. Larkyn represented Canada on the JGP a number of years ago, as well as competing at Jr. Worlds. She also competed last spring earning a bronze medal at Le Hague. Next week she competes at Nepela Trophy.

ETA: sorry, missed the "senior" part. Anyway, she competed senior internationally last spring.

I am really glad Kaitlyn changed back but I feel that is a guilty pleasure. I was let down when I saw "Summertime" but it is so new & needed time to develop so I decided to just wait and trust in Kaitlyn and her coach.I hope they came to this conclusion on their own and were not pressured into it. Maybe they have ideas to add or modify things in it to up the marks considerably so can't wait to see it. I think her lp needs quite a bit of work so both programs may benefit.

Much of the problem with SUMMERTIME IMO was the poor music they selected. I could learn to enjoy the first part...although there are much better vocals...but that second part...what was that besides bad?

Skate Canada will be Austman's fourth senior international I believe:)

I think it may be her fifth. Twice at Autumn Classic (most of us are trying hard to forget those skates, or was it only once?) once at Le Hague, once at Nepela (next week,) and then Skate Canada. Hopefully she will finally nail that 3S+3T in the short. Rumour has it that she lands it in practice; she just needs to go for it in compeition!

Austman only skated once at the Autumn Classic in 2016. It was her first senior international.

Getting excited to see how Pineault and Long skate today at SLC!
