Hurricane Irma

Slightly annoying to see the graphic with blowing wind/water at the bottom of the Weather Channel's screen. When the live videos are shown, the graphic at the bottom sometimes looks like part of the live videos.

Sorry, I am just plain mad--and I don't totally blame the left behinds on the reporters. But if the tv commentators are everyone's magnet and could/could have lead the way in people's decision making process/es, then every sentence out of news reporters mouths, since last week, should have been prefaced by EVERYONE GET OUT NOW IN ALL PARTS OF FLORIDA, DOESN'T MATTER IN THIS CASE WHAT SIDE--EAST SIDE/WEST SIDE, NORTH OR SOUTH, JUST PLAIN GET OUT, and now here's our story...
.
People have been told again and again and again. If they haven't left yet it's because they have decided not to do so. I feel very sorry for the children and animals who are forced to remain behind with them.

Per Weather Channel, tornado warning for southern Florida. Tornado sightings around Fort Lauderdale and miami dade country now.

On MSNBC earlier, a reporter on the ground was interviewing a family swimming in the ocean. With children. The anchor in studio was clearly struggling not to roll her eyes and actually said something to the effect of they know the cameras are on and are exaggerating for effect. I was very proud of that anchor.

I think in general ALL the major news outlets have done a great job of explaining that because of the size of the storm, it didn't matter which coast it hit, you were going to feel it. I feel sorry and immense sadness for those who cannot leave because of financial strain/disability/no where to go. For people who did stay and could have left, I hope no first responder is injured due to their stupidity.

My friends and their elderly dog from Sarasota are en route to Asheville, NC to the welcoming arms of some dog loving friends. Apparently, there's a shortage of pet friendly accommodations in Georgia and NC.

It's so strange for me to see the mass evacuations, because I lived in Taiwan for three years, and went through several typhoons, and evacuation was never even mentioned for any of them. Not even Typhoon Nepartek last summer, which was a Cat 5 super typhoon that had a direct hit on the town where I lived...I was in the States at the time but my friends were there, not even a mile from the ocean. And they just rode it out right where they lived. Even if they had wanted to get out, I don't think they could have. They were staying in a school dorm which was very solid and safe; not everyone in the city was that lucky. Taitung, Taiwan is a poor county; so many buildings sustained severe damage. My home/school was lucky enough to escape with only part of the roof blown off and a broken outside stairwell wall due to a tree hitting the side of the building.

All my thoughts and prayers with everyone in Florida...direct hits are scary, especially at this force.

I am watching CNN and I had to get up to answer the door. Is anyone else watching? Can someone explain to me why a woman who is pregnant with twins was evacuated from FL Keys to Miami? I am so confused. Is that logical or am I stupid? Not snarking....serious question.

She probably waited too long to evacuate.

Miami is the lesser of two evils at this stage of the game since the Keys are totally unsafe while in Miami there is a chance off finding a place reasonably safe.

@Spareoom  :( I'm glad you didn't have to go through it yourself. Sounds like your friends were very fortunate, maybe storm surge was less of an issue? That's the greatest reason for the evacuations.

I'd never even heard the typhoon's name before sad to say. It must have been frustrating for you to try to get info at the time.

@FGRSK8, thank you. I live in the Midwest and don't know anything about hurricanes. This is tornado alley! We don't evacuate, we go to the basement.

Yes, I'm guessing so...even though my school is very close to the ocean, it has a decent amount of elevation. I have friends who have a house that is right on the beach just a few miles north and they didn't evacuate; they sustained heavy wind and rain damage but the waves did not come up very high. So there must be something about the ocean surrounding Taiwan that makes storm surge not much of a threat.

Yeah, it was scary, and hard not being there, too...everyone said how much of a blessing it was that the typhoon made landfall during the night, so everyone was at home and not out...I don't believe there were any fatalities for that reason (which is a miracle considering). I remember being glued to Facebook and seeing my friend's statuses update during their night, and then seeing all the destruction during the day...

This is a video of the storm taken just down the street from where I used to live (the guy in the green vest is an IDIOT; he is SO lucky he did not get sucked out...): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm04D_YlOPE

My parents live in Ft Myers (not on the beach or the outer islands). They have evacuated to a friends house more inland. I hope they will be ok. They have all kinds of the FL insurance so the house can be replaced. Their lives can't. I'm really worried. :(

The entire FL Keys have been evacuated & all the medical facilities are closed. Because of her high risk pregnancy she and her family were given the option to evacuate to a safe hospital in Miami so medical care is available should she need it.

She's one of about 200 high risk and late term pregnancies sent there. My guess is that it is the designated Level II for her area.

@WildRose and @Aceon6, thank you. I didn't hear the whole story. I would have thought that if you were evacuating you would have tried to get further away than that. I know it's not feasible for everyone. But I was curious.

I am praying that everyone stays safe, wherever you are. The decision as to whether or not to evacuate at this point has already been made. They are reporting that shelters are now turning people away and that people out on the streets now are violating curfew and are subject to arrest.

JHC, CNN is predicting 4+million people without power for several weeks after this storm. This might sound stupid, but I am more afraid of the aftermath than the storm itself.
Florida Power says some of the infrastructure may need to be entirely rebuilt.

That was one of my worries about Key West, that the bridge in and out (am I right, there is one?) would be shredded and not repaired for months.

I wonder if there is a better system to be found for opening up shelters. I heard more than one person interviewed saying that they had gone to multiple shelters only to find many already filled. For instance, could one go to local college or schools in a prearranged manner?

Am I crazy or is there such a thing as changes in barometric pressure effecting pregnancy and labor?

So many questions, that's the Green Analyst in me. This is going to take years to sort out, if ever.

I think those barometrically changed early deliveries can also happen during blizzards.

On CNN I just saw an official predicted storm surge map for Naples and Marco Island, in any storm, scary stuff.

The storm has been stalling over Cuba, they think that is a sign that it is about to turn to Keys.

Yes, they can, or so I was told. My firstborn came that way. And the maternity ward was mobbed. The medical staff had a pool running on who would give birth first. All the money was on me because I came in the door in transition. I ended up being dead last  I heard about it the whole time I was in the hospital.

Fort Myers still picking up people who dial 211 for help getting into shelters and said they might be able to help tomorrow.

Marco Island saying absolutely too late.
