Hurricane Irma

I just came across this link - I really hope they at least went to one of the places listed. :(

My ex hasn't reached them since Friday morning. Maybe they did evacuate. Here's hoping.

To be fair, people who went west from Miami and Ft Lauderdale are in worse trouble. With the last minute predictions, if you don't leave the state entirely you take the chance of heading into trouble rather than away from it.

ETA: saw post from my former rabbi on FB. House that he and his family were living in on St Thomas is destroyed but the historic synagogue is intact.

Last night CNN interviewed a holdout in Key West who said he was well prepared to stay with food, water and lots of guns. Apparently he thinks he can shoot a hurricane

Apparently people think they can... :wall: The times we live in. ...

Well, when he shoots himself in the foot, literally, tell him not to call 9-1-1, cuz they ain't comin'!

That's scary as all hell, hearing that when the storm kicks up that there isn't anyone to call. That's part of the circumstance of not evacuating.

I am watching CNN and I had to get up to answer the door. Is anyone else watching? Can someone explain to me why a woman who is pregnant with twins was evacuated from FL Keys to Miami? I am so confused. Is that logical or am I stupid? Not snarking....serious question.
It's being reported on BBC (from Miami) that Miami will be 'on the outer edges' of Irma's path so maybe that's the safest thing to do. They also report that Irma has moved 14 miles West of the projected path.

According to CNN "They keep finding pets tied to trees". What must a person be thinking to tie an animal outside in weather like this?!

Some people are awful.

Other people are just awfully stupid and probably believe that the dog will be there waiting for them once Irma passes. Never underestimate human stupidity.

Miami Beach getting 70mph wind gust with the storm still 100 miles from them. They stated in high rises that wind gusts around 100 mph.

Landfall in key west.. wow huge hurricane winds there the noise is incredible a link that was in twitter. Even Fort Lauderdale has 70mph winds and its 70 miles from the eye!! I guess not going back to category 3 as over the keys now an back in the warm bay .. next is the Everglades

Slightly annoying to see the graphic with blowing wind/water at the bottom of the Weather Channel's screen. When the live videos are shown, the graphic at the bottom sometimes looks like part of the live videos.

Yeah, during Harvey, it would look like the reporter was standing up to her waist in water. Confusing. And with all of the different small pictures they cram in there and the banners at the bottom (all of them), you can't see anything clearly. Even when I put it in HD to fill up the 40" screen.

All of them keep bouncing back between idiots standing out in the middle of the street being blown sideways and others who say it was really windy or raining hard here 15 minutes ago. Or here is a palm front that got blown to the ground, like that's never happened in Florida.

There has been build-up to this for a week. I know it's terrible and scary for everyone in Florida, of course, and the storm surge will be the worst part, but it would have been more "impressive" before seeing people driving boats down the streets of Texas for days after the hurricane hit land. Maybe that's why some of the people who have lived in Florida for a long time just boarded up and stayed inside.

There is one piece of good news in all this. By virtue of the fact that the eye of Irma dragged along the north coast of Cuba for a 24 hour period, this effectively knocked about 35-40 mph off the highest sustained winds. If the eye of Irma had remained in the middle of the channel between Cuba and the Bahamas, then impacted Florida, we would be talking sustained winds of 175 mph with gusts to 200 mph.

One thing Miami may need to look out for still is that the storm seems to have shifted due north rather than to the Northwest. If a front pulls it back over a bit, then the area may be right where they started. It's only moving at 9MPH.

And a ton of people I know are still on Miami Beach. My social media is filled with their videos of the storm. Most people seem to have lost power now, too.

@Tony Wheeler - I'm following weather channel and msnbc. Most recent info, storm surge is effecting some areas of downtown miami. flooding and crane collapsed on biscayne avenue. The bad news is the storm is moving slower and the current conditions will remain for another 6 to 8 hours and tornado warnings for at least another 24 to 36 hours. :(

Also, the weather channel predicts next landfall marco island as cat 3/cat 4. winds around 130 mph. This looks to be the worse case probability for Naples, Fort Myers and especially Tampa.

Wow the hotel we stayed at for work in downtown Miami has like 5ft of water outside! Miami downtown looks worse then Miami beach an that is without the water surge!

I do not like seeing news reporters almost blowing away and putting themselves in harms way. They can report on what's happening from a little more protected area and still get the point across.
Complete foolishness. It isn't heroic. I appreciate the coverage, but not at the expense of safety. This woman on CNN is hardly 100 lbs. She has no business being outside.

Naples is starting to get hit bigtime. I can't believe they are still outside.

Just announced confirmed wind gust just north of Miami of 109 mph!!!!

The sheer size of Irma and damage the outer bands is doing is just incredible.

Naples, Marcos Island, Fort Myers are going to see devastation.

There is an Israeli reporter standing out in this reporting live on the 8:00 news. :wall: proving that this dumbness is worldwide. (Lots of Israelis in south Florida.)

Of course we have US reporters standing next to Gaza every time there's a war, if the army lets them.

BBC reporter standing there in Miami saying everyone should be in shelters and there he is standing outdoors with wind and rain pounding down .

I feel for the west coast of Florida - they look as if they are getting direct hits from Irma. I hope all FSU'ers are staying safe - or as safe as they can.
