Program music news passed along to me from the Philadelphia (Aston, PA) rink where the senior international men practiced earlier: Max Aaron ran through his short program to Les Miz (Bring Him Home/One Day More) and the jumps he reportedly landed were 1T (planned 4T combo), 4S & 3A.

Sean Rabbitt did his SP run through to "Tequilla" complete with PeeWee Hermann gestures.

Is Maxim Naumov age eligible for JGP? He still needs a triple loop but the Lutz and flip are both very good.

Interesting message being sent to the other U.S. Men in Philadelphia, with Andrew Torgashev getting the highest components.

Maybe this is exactly what happens when the judges know not the competitors and their "ranking" and therefore judge in a "blinded" way as in medical research (ie, no preconceived notions).

I do like HIM, and I fist-bumped HIM (and said good job) at Glacier Falls in 2015 before he got rich and famous, but it took last season to really sell me on his skating.

Now he's Nathan freakin' Chen, b**ch! :rockstar:Ready to take on the world and make a liar out of people.

Max and the classics are such a match made in heaven. Even for an August not-clean outing that Bring Him Home/One Day More SP was so, so beautiful. And it was such a clever idea to splice the two songs. Ending it with One Day More is sort of even more tear-inducing in some ways - this Olympics, Max, is this your one day more? Or is there one day more after that? - but also he powers it incredibly well.

 Your powers of observation are a bit weak then, when it comes to Nathan Chen. Kid has been great for quite some time. You weren't paying good attention. Of course novice and junior skaters with talent can go by the wayside as easily as saying boo! And Nate too had his struggles with that unpronounceable and not fun bone growth mess of an illness. But boy did he stare that f'ing bozo down!

Nathan has always possessed huge gobsmacking talent, along with something that seems like preternatural wisdom, confidence, chutzpah, and out-of-this world determination mixed with an unflappable nonchalance about his freakin' ability to get the job done, man. Nathan has always been cool and nobody's fool.

I also have versions cut from the stream - but you'll need to PM me for that link.

I just don't usually pay full attention to juniors until they're seniors, that was the first time I've even seen that fluff of him. I enjoy watching the grown-adult skaters. I had no clue he played hockey in his living room with his family. :rockstar: but yeah whatever, at least I know now right? It's all about learning, Nathan Chen is a yes.

^^ Yes, it's not a knock. A lot of people don't pay too much attention to Juniors and lower level skaters. Sometimes those fans who do must caution themselves not to get over-excited because uber expectations can be dashed in a flash.

It can be rewarding though having followed someone like Nathan Chen since he was very young. Recalls to my mind following Michelle Kwan's career since she was 12. :encore:

BTW, is anyone else having problems getting current videos to play on Ice Network?

Yes. I had to download Firefox to play Jason's videos from Glacier Falls - wouldn't work in Chrome.

I am in love with Jason's FS. The cut of The Room Where It Happens in the SP is bothering me even more now that I've heard it right from the start.

^^ Ahhh yes, I love the way Alex moves, and I also think the music is cool. The choreo really sings! And as usual, Alex is fully committed to it, which is why he's so good.

BTW, Alexei K's sp seems a direct copy of AdaRipp's 2012 sp, right down to the red top. I think the music and program really work for Alexei, but maybe he should get a different color top? :p Not that the red doesn't look good on him. It looked great on AdaRipp too. :D

To wear red color is very common in Russian folk dance. Men usually wear either red top or red trousers, or at least have multicolored costumes with red being prominent. Now obligatory, but common.

Max's new programs are looking wonderful. You can really see all the hard work he's done coming to life. His spins are better, his turns are better, his steps are better, his overall movement is better, his programs have an energy about them. God, if they don't recognise it this year at US Nats...

And the jumps are there. He was credited with two rotated quads in the short and three in the long and the intended fourth was popped to 3S. And that's in August. He's looking better now than he did in October last year. Come on, Max. Blitz this season and show everyone you're not done yet.

 I love men's skating today and I do agree that they are every bit as good as skaters of yesteryear - in different ways. But John Curry a parody? Painful to watch? If you can't appreciate just how difficult it is to skate with that much control while the body is that stretched and to create such intrinsic and flawless beauty, then your world must be a very grey place. :scream:

And while he did want to be a ballet dancer when he was younger and was very honest about that, and while he only wanted to win 'the Olympics thing' - his words not mine - so he could create his own company, skating was John's passion and to suggest otherwise is an insult to the man himself.

Thanks for asking @SmallFairy! Between 1972 and 1976 there was a definite growth with Terry Kubicka regularly attempting programs with all 5 triples (up to lutz). But the standard was two to three triples; toe, sal, loop. Robin Cousins won the OGM 4 years later with very similar content and while others had harder programs his superiority in overall skating and the tremendous quality in what he did was always rewarded over the likes of Igarashi, Hoffmann, Hamilton et al who were doing triple lutz and/or triple flip.

The boom came in the early 80's. In 1980 Scott Hamilton had one of the most difficult programs out there; a triple lutz and multiple sals and toes. But by 1984 and the advent of Orser & Boitano, his content was dated. Robin Cousins commentating for BBC in 1983 was shocked how many men were doing triple lutz combos' in the short. Then by 1988, if you didn't have a triple axel you were always going to struggle.

That said it certainly didn't happen as quickly as the quad boom of the last two seasons. But with the IJS system, you gotta take the risk if someone else is out there landing the stuff.

Thank you @floskate ! I have to watch Terry Kubicka. It's really interesting to dig into the development.

As for your first two paragraphs: :respec:

I can't say enough about how much better of a LP Max has this year compared to The Lion King. :respec: Letting Katherine Hill take over the reins from Phillip Mills turned out to be a great decision for him IMO. Everything clicked here and there wasn't a moment of feeling :yikes: - now that's some major progress. I love his music edit as well.

Is he dealing with some sort of injury though? I saw a runthrough video of his program on YouTube (no jumps) from practice and he fell on a spin. I think this is his strongest program ever, its really solid material for him.

Nah I don't think so. Ice is slippery, Chan put up a video the other day of him kersplatting off a spin entry. It's just August, that's all.

But you're right, there is so much that is wonderful about this LP already.

So I've criticized men before for ignoring music when they are prepping for a quad. Max, who in the past has been very guilty of that, is now continuing his musical interpretation while prepping. It makes such a difference in the performance. So major kudos to him for that, because it can't be easy to change.

Just hoping he keeps this up throughout the season.

ETA: Now get him a real costume! Maybe something with dark purple?

I have a good feeling about Max this season at least in terms of being in a good place to be as mentally ready to compete.

That's an ideal principle for sure, though as it turned out, the long program component score rankings for the top 4 were pretty much the same order from the short (albeit with larger gaps for Andrew and Tim from the rest):

1. Torgashev 7.68
2. Doleknsky 7.57
3. Aaron 7.08
4. Johnson 7.07

There is a rough quality video up on youtube of Max's LP from last night.

His scoring was quite low, but I think he accomplished a bigger goal of landing multiple quads / two types of quads in the SP and LP of a competition. If he can do that, he can accomplish the melding of all the elements / components in both programs into something relatively great. I also think that the rise of Nathan and now Vincent have made it more of a do-or-die situation for him. Athleticism is his strong point and he's got to kick it up a notch if he wants a chance at Team Pyeongchang.

Dolensky seems battle-ready. He has so many positive qualities, so it's too bad the quad continues to be a nemesis.

Agree. Not a big Max fan. But this could be a confidence booster - with three 4's of 2 types, and a 3A/3T he could be in top ten.

But please someone fix the music ending. It's like he's skating along and someone just lifted the needle off the record because his time was over. End on bloody TONIC, please.

Words cannot express how much I (and the crowd) loved Tim Dolensky and Andrew Torgashev at the Philly comp. Not to mention a certain program based on Tequila!:D

Can someone remind me if Tim has a GP spot? (I know, I could look it up, sorry, I'm tired out from driving and sitting in a cold rink:lol:) If not, sorry, Josh, I love you too, but you already have one. Tim for SA!:cheer2:
