2017-2018 Program Music and Choreographers

Just saw this on Twitter:

Shoma Uno released his program for next season.
SP:"Winter" from "The Four Seasons" by Vivaldi
FS:"Turandot"

I wonder if Turandot will have new choreo?

Ugggg why war horses?? Why????? The 4 seasons needs a 50 year ban at this point. I thought figure skating was such a great outlet to be creative. So why bust out R&J, Turandot, 4 seasons rehashes, POTO, etc etc. Id rather just go play football then if it was me. Sigh. OK, its Monday, let me vent. LOL

Also I dont mind Shae Lynn's Choreo.. Shes done good things for Wags and she did a very sophisticated Porgy & Bess for Radio......

Added later: @Dobre LOL, I just saw your post above mine after I posted my comments... I agree with you 5,000,000%. I mean.. why bother?

Added even later, LOL: @VIETgrlTerifa Arakawa could have recycled the SP of Techno-Swan for a decade. I didnt mind that recycling because it was an unheard of piece.. Her Turandot... once was enough for me (just because its not an original enough piece that warrants a rehash). But I LUUURVVEEE HER!!!!

But her Swan program I watched for Years!!!!! I really loved the costume on that too. GORG!!!!

@rosewood posted the source link in Uno's fan thread: http://www.shoma-uno.com/info#388
He says Turandot which he skated in his debut season in Sr field is the program he loves and he has lots of memories with it. He says he's excited, and it'll be fun as well as difficult to skate it again. He wishes to show how he improved since the debut season.

As for Winter, he says he'll skate it in summer shows although the image of the program is winter.

Not too happy about Shoma recycling his FS but the SP should be good at least! TBH I was hoping he would move away from the classical boring music and give us something more modern/edgy/stylized, but hopefully that will come in the future. I love watching him no matter what and I do like his Turandot program considering its Turandot. Hopefully we'll see a new costume and some new steps!

I think we generally see more warhorses trotted out for the Olympic season - skaters want to stick with the more tried and true. For the excitement level, I love anticipating this coming season, but I find the year after the Olympics is when we tend to get more variety in music choice and more experimenting with different styles/genres.

And the "Oldie Goldie Hits" keep on comin'!!!

The recycling of old programs is a somewhat-recent trend, maybe due to economics. "Back in the day..." long ago, the trend was the opposite, especially in the old socialist block. Katarina Witt debuted "Funny Face" in Sarajevo 1984, then kept it for the next season.

The general tendency was to greatly RESPECT the Olympic season by crafting new programs. Maybe a skater would keep one cut of music (like Fleming did in 68), but the Oly programs used to be mostly new. I miss the respect and importance of the old ways...just as I miss the banning of vocals and the mandatory long sleeves on dresses. :)

If a program has scored well or well enough in the past, and you've improved as a skater since then, and you skate cleanly and don't leave any points on the table, then I guess there's no reason for any skater to come up with new programs unless they want to do it for themselves. There's nothing saying they have to come up with something new for the Olympics, and it will be the first time many of the Olympic viewers will be seeing the program.

The Olympics is the most nerve-racking event these skaters will ever do. I can easily see wanting something old and familiar and comfortable to skate. Like a security blanket. :)

And honestly, there were times where we fans really wished the skater would rehash a program than keep the program they are trying to sell to us because we think the older programs were better showcases for that skater's talent. This is the time where the general public will be watching them.

Wow, Shoma's music choices are tailor made for the :blah: emoticon. I love the kid but calling those choices generic is an understatement, not to mention one is a rerun!

I'm glad Shae Lynn is working with Radio again, I like almost all the choreography she does. :respec:

Oh Frau....no....I live for power ballads and armpit hair! :40beers:

I don't remember ever wanting a skater to go back to an old program. Kwan in 2002?? But even then, I didn't want to see an old program. I just wanted a better program. :D

Perhaps these old programs will look fresh to the general public at the Olympics. For 5 or 10 minutes. However, for the entire rest of the season ..... :shuffle:

I am hoping we are just hearing about the warhorse/La La Land selections all in a row right now because these are the people who have good reason to announce their selections early. It's only the beginning of May. These announcements are coming from people using well-known music, letting others know now in the hope that it will dissuade the larger field from using those pieces.

In other words, I am hoping there are many more sparkling/original/rarely used selections yet to come.

It's a fluffy, safe romantic piece about pretty white people, so a lot.

It's the perfect vehicle for a Shpilband team.

I haven't seen the movie yet. The previews of La La Land were enough for me. I was glad the movie didn't actually win Best Picture Oscar. I liked Damien Chazelle's Whiplash, but apparently his idea for La La Land came first. However, Chazelle couldn't get anyone interested in taking a chance on his La La Land project until he won awards for Whiplash (short film and full movie version).

After watching Misha Ge's lovely, romantic choreo for his music cuts from La La Land, I don't need to see anyone else's. Beautiful and from the heart. Misha is special. :)

I didn't realize she did Nic's program either! She's so good. :)
Has anyone mentioned Shae's work with Kevin Reynold's? That was brilliant in drawing out his inherent musicality and developing a style that was compatible with his personality. She has the ability to choose music and choreography that develop skater's on-ice personalities without the end product seeming forced, in my opinion. Working with Elena will be a nice challenge for her. I'm looking forward to seeing the direction she takes Elena's current over-the-top-and-fully-committed-to-it style. A phone call here, and a skip there it will not be!

Yes, I too like her work with Kevin. I also agree that Shae choreographs to the skater and their personality and skill set.
I think many other choreographers tend to do programs that they themselves would like to do.

She choreographed Elena's SP from this season.
