Japanese Figure Skating 2016/17 season news, national team, updates

What top-notch program for Gracie??
 You may not agree but I think her two programs of this past season were well built up very good programs.:)

Talking about great programs from Lori, I'm still in love and repeating watching Benedictus almost a year after it was revealed in last season's THE ICE. I saw in a TV program that lots of Mao's ideas were included in the choreography of Benedictus as well as skating with Carolina and Joannie was Mao's idea to begin with. Now Mao is matured enough to create something interesting with Lori. I'm looking forward to seeing the programs and how she'll perform them. I thought Mao is talented in choreography when I watched the TV program. Yes, maybe I'm biased since I'm a huge Mao fan. :D:cheer: Carolina is a great performer and has good ideas for choreography/music-choices. That must be one of the reasons she skated great programs. Can't wait to see what Lori did with these two great skaters. :cheer: (But I don't know who is Carolina's choreographer for this coming season yet. :nopryde:)

:COP:Lori Nichol is sometimes from hell, but many times (like with Benedictus) she gets it so right that you'll never get annoyed with her choreo ever again, and everything looks like Lori Nichol-heaven. :swoon:

Benedictus is a great program that works.

My take: Lori's choreograph is always there, depending on which music and who's skating to the piece. But the truth is each skater comes with different abilities/talent/interpretations. Plus, if s/he/they is/are experienced enough, they find a way to enhance the performance with their own interpretations. I have a sense that Mao is moving toward that way (and hence not worrying much about re-used melodies given from Lori, as a long-term Mao fan)

I agree to a certain extent, but say for example, I can't imagine Gracie Gold's Phantom of the Opera being a masterpiece no matter how she skated it. And then there're also her work with the Chinese...

Dreams on Ice (annual show for national team members & invited skaters) will take place in Nagaoka, July 1-3, 2016: http://www.onice.jp

Men: Mura, Tanaka, Nakamura, Tomono, Miyata, Shimada; Shun Sato (Novice A champ)
Ladies: Miyahara, Hongo, Honda, Higuchi, Yokoi, Sakamoto; Rika Kihira (Novice A champ)
Pairs: Suto/Boudreau Audet
Dance: Muramoto/Reed
Synchro: Jingu Ice Messengers Grace
Special Guest: Evgenia Medvedeva
Sota Yamamoto is invited to Dreams on Ice as of June 23. It must be a good sign of his recovery from the injury. As of June 13 it was announced organizers had contacted with Hanyu, but it turned out to conclude that he's impossible to skate in DOI due to the injury in the lisfranc joint ligament in his left foot.
http://www.onice.jp/top.html

Average of skaters' age on Team Japan who skate in DOI looks much younger than it was before Sochi Olys. (DOI is the show where Team Japan skaters show their new programs for the new season.)

Apart from Team Japan skaters, adding to Medvedeva who was already invited, Elizaveta Nugumanova and Petr Gumennik were invited to DOI as guest skaters.

@rosewood or anyone else, will there be TV coverage again, and is it worth starting a new GSD thread for this show?

________

Not changed much. One notable thing is that a skater can be selected for Worlds even if the skater was unable to participate in Nationals in the case the skater meet the criteria. JSF used to have a strong policy to require skaters to participate in Nationals in the past.

I think her programs with Sui & Han last season and Mao's Madame Butterfly rivaled every other program at Worlds last season.

Lori's best work is very very good. But the awfulness of Gracie's POTO... And Zijun's boring greatest classical hits programs... And last year's ho-hum Denis Ten opera programs...

If you mean Wakaba's, I haven't heard the musics of her new programs. Latest update was here.
She's been skating her new EX Byakuya wo iku (Byakuyako) in spring-summer shows. Here are photos from ongoing Dreams on Ice where Team Japan skaters skate one of their new programs, either of for competitions or shows. She skted Byakuya wo iku here again.

thanks for this. I can't wait to see her new programs.
Every photo i see of her, she looks taller and taller - i was initially thinking she was one of those skaters who would hit her full height very early, but i was wrong on that one - she looks taller and leaner every time i see her.
I'm really looking forward to seeing her programs this season. i won't lie - this past season i wasn't happy at her progression initially, but as the season went on i definitely changed my opinion.

as an aside, i'm also really looking forward to watching the Japanese ladies in jgp this coming season!

Fumie Suguri at Adult Worlds, rocking a headband :glamor:
Each year, the International Adult Figure Skating Competition in Oberstdorf, Germany, attracts skaters from around the world who are passionate about the sport. The masters elite events feature athletes who have previous high-level competitive experience. Making her debut this year was Fumie Suguri, a four-time Japanese champion, three-time world medalist and two-time Olympian. Suguri finished third in masters elite ladies I free skating and won masters elite ladies I artistic [video linked above].
Icenetwork caught up with Suguri, 35, after she returned to Japan, and asked her how she liked this new approach to competition.

Satoko's SP music is from La Bohème by Puccini. In the article below she explained her SP as "Waltz. Lots of balletic movements. Cheerful music." Her LP has an "image of universe," and its themes are love and peace. She uses three musics in her LP.

Rika Kihira (13 years of age), whose 3A(fall) was ratified in a local competition last season, reportedly landed a 3A, 3S-3T and 3Lz-3T today in her new EX to A Whole New World at a small exhibition show held by Kansai University today. (Kansai Uni has a rink where lots of top skaters trains/trained such as Daisuke T, Nobu Oda, Satoko, Marin etc.)

Here is a group photo of the Kansai Uni's exhibition show.

There was another small event at Howa ice rink where Nagakubo and other coaches teach students. According to a twitter report Miyabi Oba landed a 3S-3Lo in her new SP to Mission. I'm glad if it means she's recovering from the trauma of concussion in last season. According to the same person Rin Nitaya's new LP is to Legend of Fall. Nitaya gold, Oba silver, Riona Kato bronze in Sr Ladies. Yuhana Yokoi won gold in Jr Ladies. Results (Sr L) (Jr L)

A 13 year old lady skater with a 3axel, 3S-3T AND a 3lz-3t?

I'll be keeping an eye on how Kihira develops for the next couple seasons, between her, Higuchi, Honda and Shiraiwa the future look bright for the Japanese ladies. I mean if things go well the Japanese ladies can have 2 ladies with a 3A that aren't Asada correct? (For some reason I'm thinking Higuchi has a 3A as well?)

In any case I'm very excited to see how the Japanese ladies do overall as these promising skaters turn senior.

I heard Wakaba landed a 3A during a practice of Fantasy on Ice this year. She worked hard on 3Lz-3Lo last season and it lead her to back pains. She ditched the combo since then. So it's doubtful she'll try harder jump(3A) or combo(3Lz-3Lo) than 3Lz-3T (she did two 3Lz-3T combos in her FS last season) in competitions in her debut season of senior field, but anyways it seems she can land 3A during training.
