What Does Your Name Mean?

I go by my middle name, but my actual first name is easily recognizable as the name of a Hindu goddess however that site completely misses that. But the name poster is nice!

I've known what my name means (stranger/foreigner) since at least high school Latin class, if not before then and didn't like the meaning, although I do like the name. What I didn't know is that according to the link above, it is a name that is "commonly given to girls." I have never, ever known or known of a boy with my name -- it's as bad as being a boy named Sue. (((All the baby boys given my name.))) It peaked in popularity in the decade before I was born and has sharply declined since then, so now there aren't even that many girls being given my name, so hopefully no more boys.

My name is Irish and means Pure

I've always wanted to know my DNA results and did the 23andme test this year. I'm 34% British and Irish so yeah, that part fits.

Pure, not so much :p -- unless it's describing my household products which are free (of perfumes) and clear (of dyes) because of allergies.

The meaning of my real name and nick name is "Messenger of God". I've been called a walking miracle by several of my doctors. The three doctors that looked like they had seen a ghost when I came out of the coma also told me I had received a miracle. So, I guess I can say that miracles really do happen ... that is in some people's eyes.

my name is short, not uncommon, but it has 4 different meanings/origins, in 4 different languages/countries/cultures. the site above only gives 1, and not the most accurate.

I like this site! It's interesting, being able to see how many babies were born with a certain name in a certain year (in the U.S.).

Little Goth - as in the Gaut tribes in Germany.

I've also seen it said to mean happy or joyful, but perhaps those are 20th century applications.

Cute. I've always known it means "Lily" (so what does the name Lily mean? ha ha). I remembered that Stockard Channing and Sigourney Weaver changed their stage names from Susan (how dare they!) I was born in almost the peak year for Susans. I know it was the third most popular name that year. The rest of it kind of doesn't make sense (Susans are timid AND self-confident? - gotta love the internet quizzes).

Crown (from the Greek), and, amusingly to me, most popular by far during the years just before and after my birth - i.e. right in the middle of the Baby Boomer era.

I knew already, but it's "White Wave" or "White Phantom." And it's originally from the Welsh, not English (goes back to "Gwynhwyfar," the source of the Anglo-francophoned "Guinevere"). Sadly, despite my mother choosing it entirely for her own reasons (a character in books she read as a child), it was also the #1 name the year of my birth. As such I've always been lukewarm about it.

I've always known the origin of my name, and it is the one listed.
My name was in the top 40 in the year I was born and reached it's height of popularity in 1961.
Just recently my granddaughter had a classmate with my name which is the first time in years that I knew of a child who had my name

Mine is a Dutch shortform of another name that means "pure".

I love name meanings!

I always knew it was Spanish for "pretty" (although not in every Spanish speaking country), and I always knew baby girls with my name were a drug on the market in the 50s, but seeing that chart...well, someday we'll all be gone:cool:

Growing up, every time I saw one of these lists the origin was European and the meaning was noble. On this list the orgin is Arabic and the meaning said wishes and desires.

I also like the info given about each name. My name was popular in the 40's and 50's (sort of) and then it took a steep dive in numbers and is hanging on.

My name peaked in popularity 15 years before I was born, so I was not cool from day one! No one names their kid my name; I don't think it's the type of name that will ever have a resurgence.

My user name didn't make the list, but it did tell me this :cheer2::

P is for pure, the spiritual side of you.

U is for unite, you bring people together.

R is for relax, you know how!

P is for patriot, your love of country.

L is for lucky, who is more?

E is for enjoy, your life can be fun!

(I don't like what it says for my real name.)

Never say never. Names go in cycles, it seems. My name was at a low point in popularity when I was born (growing up, I only knew one other Claire in my school district), but now it's in the top 50.

I'm guessing what your name is based on the meaning. If I am right, my friend has a 5 year old who shares it.

My name means consecrated to God, from the Hebrew original. I've always hated that meaning and want whatever the name is that means crazy sexy lady.

My name is from the Hebrew and means bee
I went to Purim one year dressed as a bee.

My name must have peaked the year I was born. My 5th grade class had 4 of us!
