From Russia with love [#23]: Spring/Summer 2016

Big interview with Zhulin about Russian ice dance
"Ilinykh needs Katsalapov"
http://rsport.ru/interview/20160412/912510423.html
- M/K seems to be done because of her injury :(
- it's still not clear about B/S
- looks like he really really is interested in Z/G :cheer2: (the only positive part of the interview for me)
- talks about Shekhovtsova and Piseev
- S/B are still too juniorish

It is a great interview, a very honest one, maybe too much nostalgy though..

My personal opinion:
Russian authorities love talking about past and I/K too much, they can't glue them back or whatever... I also miss I/K somehow but it is non-real to make them skate together again.
However, Russian coaches and Fed continue talking about it, it's a kind of justice - "our ice dance sucks because I/K are no longer together" and not because of the system, of Kustarova's programs and Zhuk's inability to teach her girls how to skate..

If it is Lena's answer to Zhulin - I totally understand her feelings

I think the results at Worlds hurt the Russian Fed more than they are showing. I guess it's normal that they are all a little bit nostalgic.
I don't agree what he said about Elena and Ruslan and think with Shpilband's help they can do a significant jump in the rankings.

I'm not so optimistic, I partly agree with Zhulin on what he says about both I/Z and S/K. I do not believe in significant jump next season, but they should and will progress, IMO.

Unless Z&G show some magic, I really can't see anything positive in the near future of Russian ice dance. S&K have nothing special about them - at all (even less than B&S and even B&S couldn't challenge for World medals anymore) and I&Z have a lot of other issues - Ruslan's strength and look and Elena's inconsistent work ethic. S&B will never be a top team as long as they stay together

Khorkina's hair is just just I don't know soccer mom on steroids? She has potential to be hot - but does whatever it takes not to be. Although doesn't seem to be stopping her from being rich famous and successful.

My money is on Z/G. I love what I've seen of them so far!

And I'm not counting out Elena/Ruslan yet. I think they will come back stronger next year and odds are that they'll finally have better programs (but EYS, maybe I'm the eternal optimist).

I agree about S/B − there's an awkwardness and a forced quality that never go away. I thought at one point that she would grow into her limbs and learn to extend extend extend. But I haven't seen any real improvement over the last two seasons. He is still more or less dragging her around the rink.

Thanks for posting that, really interesting...at least what I understand of it in the garbled together automated translation. I/K are surely a loss, but they were never reliable either in their four years together in seniors. They would have (probably) continued being contenders for medals, but who says they would have ever gotten it together when it mattered? Sochi was the exception in their career. B/S also managed one Worlds medal in their senior career. And that was in 2013, since then it has looked as if they'd been passed over a bit. These two couples were/are stronger than the pairs they have now, but even they weren't setting the world on fire. At this point IMO it is sort of a cop-out for the Russian fed/system to look at individual pairs and ignore the systemic issues that seem to be going on. Why don't strong junior pairs transition into seniors successfully? Kustarova and Svinin/Zhuk haven't always delivered, and neither has Zhulin for that matter.

Appreciated that he said that B/S would have been probably 5th, 6th at Worlds (I agree with that more or less), it would have been easy to claim them as some sort of saviours to make a point against the Russian couples who were there. Thought that was very fair and realistic of him, noting that Russian ice dance in general is in a transitional phase and not excluding his own couple. At least that's how I understood it. I agree with some of the criticism he has of the current bunch, but I don't think any of them are hopeless. They might not be world beaters, but surely they're all capable of improving and bettering their results. It might not reach former glory days, or at least not in the short term, but it's what they have and what they need to work with. Moaning about the past (or even better, some imaginary future that might have been...or not) can't be the answer.

And I did get a kick out of him somewhat indirectly dissing Shpilband for that "P/C only do easy stuff" remark. That yeah, putting in difficulty only for the sake of difficulty and to make the program look busy isn't so hot either. :D

I love Zhulin's honesty. But he disses Igor and Marina more for not understanding ICE DANCE as more DANCE than ICE lol. So true. And he had the IT in his days, so he knows ;)

I am sorry to say I agree about I&K ... She's not doing well with Ruslan because they don't fit yet. And they have so little time to gel :(

Speaking of Peter T as a choreographer, when it was mentioned up-thread that Moskvina doesn't choreograph for Kav/Smi (I had always assumed she did, in large part), I was surprised to see that he has been the primary choreographer for several seasons, including their wonderful lp that they kept over into this season.

Its true about B/S. when they were at the gpf what did they do there? Not much and that was without P/C there. The problems are the couples as well as the systemic issues that don't produce Shubuanti's or Hubbell and Donahue's.

My gut feeling is that Elena and Ruslan are not going to make it very far as a team. If they win the world championship at some point, I will eat my words.

My gut feeling is that SinKat are not going to make it too far.
My guess - both of them won't be able even to medal at WC in this Olympic cycle
:(

I don't like Sin&Kan at all(!!!!!!) but I have to disagree with you. I think they have a chance to at least stay together because Vika appears to be completely devoted to Nikita and tries to please all his moods whilst not having a voice or personality of her own. I think that's just the kind of partner Nikita was looking for

That has nothing to do with skating though. Devotion to Nikita is not going to get levels. I am very impressed with their improvement though. Right now they seem to have more of a chance because there's an upward trajectory. Better to go from 4th at Nationals to 2nd than 1st to 4th like Elena and Ruslan. That is just unheard of and probably a career killer. However I wouldn't be surprised at all to see S&K screw up and miss the World team next year.

I hate the idea of any athlete being forced to terminate his or her career before he or she chooses.

But if Ksenia is really out, I am dusting off my hopes for a Betina Popova & Kirill Khaliavin partnership.

Sad then than he's totally inconsistent and she's a mediocrity. She's not even half the skater of papadakis.
