Harper Lee has died - authored "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Love To Kill A Mockingbird! Both the book and movie were fantastic! R.I.P.

I've read this book hundreds of times since I was a little girl. I think I'll pick it up again. RIP, Ms. Lee, and thank you.

I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks. ~ Harper Lee

And another death :( May she rest in peace!

(Does the after-life have a discount for celebrities this year? I think it's enough now! We don't need any more deaths)

I've never read "To Kill a Mockingbird" :shuffle:
(just ordered it on Amazon)

One of the best novels ever written in the English language!

This is an unpopular opinion, but I don't think the film does the novel justice. I loved the book sooooo much, but found the film a bit tedious (especially the kids).

Yeah, those kids weren't the greatest. They actually annoyed me.

Sad to hear this. . I have a degree in English and I don't think I ever knew that book was written by woman. . My bad to be sure.

My grandson is in the middle of reading To Kill a Mockingbird for school. They had an interesting discussion about the author (and her death) yesterday.

RIP

Sad news. My condolences to her family and friends. Harper Lee was more than just an author. She will always be a legend. RIP, Harper. <3

I've never read "To Kill a Mockingbird" :shuffle:

Me neither. I saw the movie. Gregory Peck was good. I had to read a bunch of other Southern Lit in college so I've never felt compelled to go back. (And it never came up in high school. Freshman "Language Arts" didn't involve novels, and I think I only took a World Literature class and half-audited a Nobel Literature course. I've had more Lao Tzu, Homer, and World got as far as Dante, just about, before we ran out of semester. Never read "The Catcher in the Rye", either, but the whole disaffected-youth thing never spoke to me anyway.) I've read more Umberto Eco, even if "The Name of the Rose" took a couple false starts and I still haven't managed to finish "The Prague Cemetery."

 You have at least seen the movie, haven't you?

Nope. Not much of a movie fan in general.

@danceronice, I'm with you, I haven't read "The Catcher in the Rye" either. But I have read Eco, and "Foucault's Pendulum" was pretty good, along with "The name of the Rose".

I adore "Name of the Rose". Especially for him being willing to go 28 chapters past an offhand reference to rabies to make a pun about "domine canes".

I did flip through "Go Set A Watchman" at the bookstore out of curiosity. I'm still not sure I'm 100% comfortable with the way it was published, but it's interesting as an artifact. Plus I liked the graphic design they went with making it look like a vintage cover.

That's insane. Especially the challenges to "sexual content" in the 21st century make me laugh. I bet the same kids are allowed to watch TV and play computer games which have 1000x more sexual content than "To Kill a Mockingbird" ever could dream of suggesting.

And the "institutionalised racism" challenge by black parents?! Seriously?! "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin" are the two books that should be studied in all schools! I cannot think of two novels that would make white people feel more ashamed and heartbroken over their history.

You are really missing out. It's one of the best novels in the English language.

And I hated the film.

I first read the book when I was about 4th grade age. My sister was watching the movie and I watched it with her, interested in the courtroom scenes. Then I found the book as part of my parents' Readers Digest abridged novels. I think I was drawn to it at a young age because it was written from the viewpoint of a child. Later on when I was in high school, I read the unabridged version and learned so much more about it. (It wasn't required reading in high school, so I got it out of the library.)

I've read it probably a few hundred times. It's my favorite novel of all time.

I haven't read it either and I don't remember if I saw the movie. It's on my "you need to read this one day" list but "one day" never seems to come.

One of my papers in grad school compared the themes of To Kill a Mockingbird with those of A Time to Kill. She remains one of my favorites. I can't imagine the pressure she must have felt afterward, but I'm so glad she shared her gift of words with us when she did. A truly remarkable woman.

To Kill a Mockingbird is A.) the only book I was forced to read in high school that I actually enjoyed, and B.) one of the only books (and I have read many) other than Harry Potter that I have read more than once.

RIP Harper Lee :(
