RIP Cecil

Unless he went on the preserve to lure the lion off, it doesn't sound as if the guide did anything legally wrong.
It seems pretty clear that he did exactly that. I hope they both rot in jail.

I am with you here.
You do? Please explain beheading people on youtube and throwing gays, blindfolded and bound, off tall buildings. Because my mind refuses to process.
ISIS believes they are fighting evil. They are wrong, but pretty much everyone wants to see evil defeated, so it's at least understandable. I can't understand why someone would want to shoot an animal that is basically defenseless just so they can say "I killed it!"

This news ruined my yesterday and today too. Disgusting human being, and it's not just him, not just this case. There have been many cases like this. I don't get why human can become so low.

The sad thing this bastard will likely get away with his crime which is so disgusting to know beforehand.

And I have just read an interview in which another hunter defends this bastard. I swear that I would be happy if this bastard loses everything and being thrown out the street to get hate for the rest of his life.

Seriously I want to use some stronger words but I am not barbaric and psychotic as this disgusting bastard.

I am amused by how many times you used the word 'bastard'. Don't get me wrong. I too feel Very strongly against people that kill innocent animals (birds included) for 'fun' or 'adventure'. If they lived in the wilderness and the only food they could get by killing animals that's a different story. He calls this 'a sport I love'. If the court does not punish him adequately, I hope that nature will, by one of his targets attacking him.

In this case he knew that he was in a national park/protected area in another country. He bribed some locals to bring the lion out, then he killed him, skinned him and cut off his head. He is a barbarian and there should not be a place like him in a civilized society.

It doesn't seem like hunting when the lion was so tame he wouldn't even bother to get up when approached by a vehicle full of tourists.

I can't help wondering if these preserves are making the animals more vulnerable to poachers by getting them used to being around tourists and causing them to lose their fear of people.

That guide has a gold mine. He owns the land adjacent to the preserve. All he has to do is lure the animals off the preserve and he has $50K, no tracking needed and the animals probably don't even run when approached - an easy target for his clients.

I'm not sure how you would know that the animal had GPS until after the kill. Unless he went on the preserve to lure the lion off, it doesn't sound as if the guide did anything legally wrong.

That guide needs to be in jail too.

In his own defense/justification, Palmer said - I didn't know this was a popular lion.

What does popularity have to do with it? He killed a defenseless animal. It's different if the lion was about to attack him. He KNEW that the lion posed no threat to him, and yet he killed him to brag about it.

I am strongly against hunting, unless a person would starve to death if he/she didn't hunt. I know there are areas like that. I saw areas of Alaska recently where one could justify hunting, but those people don't kill for entertainment. The actions of this dentist are deplorable but even a court may not be able to punish him strongly enough; they are bound by the law. A better punishment may be if he loses most of his patients, his license to practice dentistry is taken away, and may be some day he realizes the seriousness of his actions.

This is the scene outside the dentist's office, which was shuttered today after all their social media was inundated with hate mail.

Here are a couple links to his hometown paper, and he sure sounds like a piece of work.

I doubt he'll receive any adequate punishment from the criminal justice system of this country or Zimbabwe, but I'm glad he is being publicly shamed. Hopefully, he will never work again and won't be able to afford his junkets around the globe to kill innocent animals.

"Palmer, 55, who pleaded guilty to a license violation after shooting a black bear in Wisconsin in 2008, said he has not been contacted by any authorities in Zimbabwe or the U.S., but added that he will cooperate with investigators. The public-relations firm that worked with Palmer on the statement said he was in the Twin Cities on Tuesday

“Again, I deeply regret that my pursuit of an activity I love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion,” the statement concluded."

He seems like a habitual law breaker to pursue this activity he loves. He is trying to blame the guides, while acting innocent. He had no business going hunting in the first place. I don't believe one bit that he regrets anything. I hope he lands in jail so he can at least regret that he is in jail.

Vash: I think this guy is such a liar and here is why: He had Cecil lured out because he wanted his rare and beautiful black mane as his trophy. No one will ever convince me that Cecil just happened to be unlucky. He was targeted and lured out and poached. And shame on the citizens who knew how important Cecil was and did it anyway. The whole thing makes me sick.

Coward ... How in the world can anybody be proud of using overwhelming technology to kill a majestic animal that is neither a threat nor intended to be a meal nor clothing? ... @@#%&%$&-#@ sociopathic coward

ETA: The Piece of Sh*t has also killed a rhino ...

I am sicked every time I think about his claim of legality and responsibility. He feels he has a clear conscious, and only regrets the social repercussions.
Also among his claimed "trophy kills" are a polar bear and an African elephant. :angryfire I am beyond sickened by his actions and lack of remorse and hope that his dental practice suffers enough losses to deter his global blood "sport."

So sad about Cecil and his cubs. :(

I really wouldn't mind at all if Palmer won't be able to afford any more trophy hunting trips and has to content himself with hunting cockroaches in his basement instead.

I would feel sorry for the practice's employees who don't make a habit of killing animals for fun. Although, if the sexual harassment accusations against him are true, they'd probably be better off if someone else took over his share of the practice anyway.

What a horrible person! I hope that some day he will be at the receiving end of his 'sport'.

So I watched the video at the bottom of Kimmel talking about it, and, if correct, Cecil is apparently the 2nd lion he killed. He killed another lion in 2008 ... This asshole felt a need to kill a 2nd lion!!!

http://time.com/3976423/jimmy-kimmel-cecil-lion-hunt/

Oh, he wants to brag about how many lions he killed. He may not stop with his 2nd kill. Quite possibly he never expected such an uproar over his killing a lion.

Something just occurred to me. He has so much money that he can spent $54,000 to kill a lion in Zimbabwe. Where did the money come from? His patients. if his patients drop him, he won't be able to pursue his expensive sport (although in all likelihood he has already amassed enough wealth to kill half the wild life in Zimbabwe, or another country in Africa).

He paid more than $125,000 to settle the sexual harassment suit, so I'm thinking that there likely is some truth there. From the Star Tribune article:
He told the newspaper that he can hit a playing card from 100 yards with his compound bow and that he eschews bringing a firearm as a backup.
One of his guides must have had a firearm as a backup, because Cecil was finally killed by one, after suffering for 40 hours from the wound Palmer inflicted. Just makes me sick.

I get the outrage over this guy, but with all these articles I am wondering about the outrage over the hunting outfit? It seems to me that the pro hunter did the luring (possible with or without Palmer's knowledge).

Palmer is not innocent, that doesn't absolve him, but for a pro hunting outfit to hunt adjacent to a National Park? they KNEW what was going on, and they should loose their licence to organize hunts.

Extradite him to Zimbabwe and let him face the judicial system there.

It's too bad he cannot be tried here in the USA. I suspect there are more animal rights groups here. OTOH I am sure Zimbabwe is proud of the wildlife they have there, and would want to precedent for anyone (local or foreigner) trying to kill their protected wildlife. I hope those guides hired by Palmer receive severe punishments, and Palmer should receive the harshest punishment possible under Zimbabwe law.

They have already been found and charged, particularly because they did not have a license for a lion.

However, by offering large sums of money, this piece of scum and those like him create a market that supports the outfit. While I do not think the pro hunters were poor by African standards, they were still overtaken by the cost-benefit analysis of getting caught vs 55,000 USD to be spent in Zimbabwe.

Sickening and disgusting!! Huffington Post has pictures of this guy with previous African animals he has killed like leopards etc. I can only hope people stop patronizing his dental practice so he cannot afford to hunt these rare and endangered animals anymore. If I lived in his town I would be front and center at the protests in front of his office. I am so MAD that people like him exist in this world. We must do something about this....but I don't know what we can do except hope the US can prosecute him or extradite him to Zimbabwe to be prosecuted!!

You can sign the petition for justice, in the link I posted just above your post.

I have already signed it. If there are other petitions, I will sign those too.

I signed it too. Also left a review on cowardly dentist's Yelp page...will sign any and all petitions. Is there one for the White House?
I'm so glad that Yelp page is still up: Apparently the dentist engaged in all sorts of bad behavior:
7/29/2015
"Dr. Walter Palmer, the Minnesota dentist who hunted and killed a famed lion in Zimbabwe in early July, sparking international outrage, paid a fine in 2009 to settle a sexual harassment claim made against him by a former employee. The employee, who was also a patient, filed the claim with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged "she was subjected to ongoing and unwelcome sexual harassment by (Palmer) including, but not limited to, verbal comments and physical conduct involving her breasts, buttocks, and genitalia."

She said she asked her supervisor and Palmer that the behavior stop, but it continued. She also said she believes she was fired for reporting the conduct.

The employee worked for Palmer from 1999 to January 2005 as receptionist and was also provided dental services by Palmer.

The complaint was dismissed in 2010 after the board determined he had completed all the requirement in the agreement. His insurer paid $127,500 to his accuser. In addition to the fine, he was also ordered to complete a jurisprudence exam and ethics course.

Palmer said he settled to "conclude the matter quickly and efficiently. (Palmer) did not admit any wrongdoing."

I won't be surprised if this guy tries to hide.
