After seeing the announcement for season 4 of Downton Abbey (January 5), I checked the Masterpiece schedule to see what they have lined up in the interim. The full fall schedulde isn't up yet but we do have new Lewis to look forward to (3 eps starting Jun 16), and new Foyle's War in September. (Yay!) There's also Endeavour in July -- I can't say I loved the pilot of that one, but I'll give it another go.

I can also highly recommend Silk, starting Aug 25. It ran here a year or two ago and I absolutely loved it. Looks like PBS is only showing the first season so far but no doubt will air the second season later.

Now we just have to wait to see when they'll pick up season 3 of Sherlock. IMDB has it listed for Sept 15 in the UK, and the interwebs are full of stories of folks on both sides of the pond wanting it to air on the same date here as over there ... but both of those points are unconfirmed.

Exactly right. Since each episode is 90 minutes, each is like a feature film (especially with the high production value they offer). I just hope they can continue the series indefinitely.

Benedict and Martin are in such demand these days...especially Benedict. He's in Star Trek: Into Darkness and August: Osage County (November 2013 release). Recently he was in the mini-series Parade's End on HBO. He's to play the late Beatles manager Brian Epstein and the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in upcoming bio-pics. And he's interested in playing WWII British code-breaker Alan Turing.

And Martin is Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit...don't know what new projects he has, but I'm sure he's also in great demand.

P.S. Late last year I bought an inexpensive all-regions DVD player (<$50)...best thing I've bought in a long time. I've been able to find older DVDs from overseas that are out-of-print in the US (i.e. Testament of Youth), as well as more recent small films that will probably never gain US release (i.e. Third Star and Wreckers with Benedict) and from UK TV (i.e. Stuart: A Life Backwards with Benedict). Also, even with shipping costs, sometimes it's less expensive to order overseas copies of films (i.e. Carlos Saura's flamenco trilogy...was much less expensive from the UK than to buy it in the US).

P.P.S. Wreckers also stars Shaun Evans, the young Inspector Morse in Endeavour.

P.P.P.S. I'm hoping to find an affordable copy of Hawking with Benedict...all I've tracked down are super expense. But I do have a digital copy via Amazon Instant Video...for only $1.99!!

REMINDER: Tonight are the season finales of Call the Midwife and Mr. Selfridge (~2 hrs).

EDIT: In after-show interview Jeremy Piven reveals that Season 2 of series will skip ahead five years...to 1914...since 2014 will be the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI. Will have new twists, turns, and characters.

So, unlike Downton Abbey, I guess we'll skip the sinking of the Titanic, but will be there for WWI.

Selfridge was an innovative and successful man. But as portrayed in show, he's quite a jerk in his private life. Will have to do a little reading to see how accurately this part is told.

EDIT2: While not definitive, this article indicates that the portrayal in the series is, shall we say, exaggerated.

I more listened to it than watched it, but it was OK. But I think I still prefer the original setting.

I've seen other modern-setting updates of operas and plays (esp. Shakespeare...Hamlet...Macbeth). They're an attempt to give a new look/modern relevance to an old set-piece. I understand the desire to try a new approach, but sometimes it just seems like a gimmick.

Mark Gatiss, British actor and writer, is the co-creator of Sherlock, and plays Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock's older brother). He also said that any information on the Internet regarding transmission dates is bogus; said it will be months before those decisions are made.

Hello everybody, sorry to be repetitive but no, #sherlock is not (nor ever was) going out in September. We don't have airdate confirmed yet.

Sue Vertue produces Sherlock; she is also married to its co-creator Stephen Moffat (also of Dr. Who fame).

Not too long ago Benedict said that he still enjoys playing Sherlock, and would like the series to continue. I guess a lot will depend on his and Martin's film work/scheduling issues.
