Thanks to TripleAxel1996, I now know why Rory Flack-Burghart was a successful pro skater. All of I knew of the story was that she was one of the only skaters to make it as a pro without having been an Olympic eligible previously, and I figured that she had the two easier triples and a very nice style. It turns out that she also had the flip, the loop, great spins, and splits that rival Sasha Cohen's.

I wonder why Rory didn't follow through and go "eligible" later that year? I remembered she was talking about it back then, and thought how weird Nationals would be with her fighting for the title with a 14 y/o Michelle Kwan (who was the anointed one) since it would be like two different competitions.

Did the USFS basically tell her to stay away? I could have sworn I also saw a performance of hers when she landed all five triples.
 
"Before they were stars..." ;) The 2009 U.S. National silver medalist pair team of Caydee Denney/Jeremy Barrett originally teamed up in the summer of 2006. They split up before Eastern Sectionals later that year (she went off to Colorado to focus on singles) and, 2 years later, she returned to Florida and reteamed with Barrett in the summer of 2008. These 2 home videos of their 2006 competitive debut were just uploaded last night.

Oh, she had been Olympic eligible previously. What she hadn't been was internationally successful during the amateur/eligible part of her career, so she hadn't been shown on TV before she was a pro.

Flack won a bronze medal in junior ladies at US Nationals in 1986, and she competed as a senior a couple of times, including at 1988 Nationals. She would have been eligible for the Olympic team if she had placed high enough.

It is hardly fair to bring up a 14 yro Michelle Kwan and call her the "anointed one". The only thing that made Kwan appealing was that she did not fall as much a Tonia Kwiatkowski, Lisa Erving and Nicole Bobek. Under most circumstances Michelle would have stayed in Jrs at the international level.

I remember seeing Rory as far back as 1980, when she was competing against Debi Thomas as a novice at Nationals...pretty stiff competition.

I believe that they often faced one another on the way up (Were they in the same section/region?) and that it was difficult for Rory to achieve success comparable to Debi's.

Happy to see a great skater like Janet remembered and appreciated.
Two female commentators from the original Japanese broadcast
doing nothing but gushing fes about how great Janet was.
Midori commented on her very intricate Jumps sequence
and how much curent skaters can learn from her beautiful skating.

Then they compared her Sappro performance to Mao's GPF performance.
They were basically saying
both of them did not lose the beat afet having a fall.
Yeah, but I do not see much similarities besides that.
And lastly they showed a part of TV commercial film
Janet did for Japanese soft drink.

Not only does he know zipadeedoodah about figure skating, he won't STFU during the skate. :rolleyes: When will these people learn that we don't want to hear their mindless natter - we want to watch the skater(s) interpret the music.
