Yuzuru Hanyu Cheer Thread

If the 4A continues to not be close enough (and it's really not-- landing the jump forward constantly and actually getting it all the way around are two very different things regardless of the enthusiasm in articles), then he's going to get << on it which knocks him down to a 3A value with -5 GOE, therefore he's ending the element with ~4 points. He could do a double Axel and score higher than that. It's giving away a ton of points even with a <.

I'm not saying he can't win in Beijing with a poor 4A attempt because we don't know how the others will skate (nor how the SP plays out), but he really needs to decide if it's worth it and if his only goal remains to land it cleanly.

IIRC it used to be worth 14-15 points before they recalibrated the BVs for quads. I think they should have left the 4A alone because it's not like its value factored into any skater's risk-reward calculations at the time and, as you say, no one has even landed a clean one yet.

He said after JNats that he doesn't think he can win the Olympics with his current layout, but he will do his best because now that he knows he's going, his competitive fire has been rekindled; however, if he does win, he wants it to be with a clean 4A.

I agree with you and many others that he could maximise his chances with a different layout (TSL suggested substituting a 4Lo for the 4A in the FS layout he used at JNats and I've seen Hanyu's fans throw around various layouts with lutzes and flips on Twitter, though they always include the 4A), but it sounds like he wants to go for both at the same time: the 4A and the gold. I think that carries the risk of missing out on both, but it's his choice.

If I were him, I'd come up with a strategic layout for the Olympics and try my best to get the OGM & then I would go to Worlds with the sole goal of landing a clean 4A there. That would give him more time to master the jump too. But I suspect his injuries are bothering him a lot and he may not have the reserves left to go to one more World Championship after Beijing.

I didn't want to say what I felt since this a "cheer" thread, but I guess you can tell! As he's aging out, Hanyu's pushing himself as if he's still a kid; adding that 4A insane IMO! I don't think this will end well! This is so reminiscent of Federer in tennis who's ego's telling him he can compete as a 40 y.o. for as long as he wants no matter how beat up his body! I guess I could have sent a private message, but you wanted to know publicly! :40beers: :wall: :40beers:

Anyone will be exhausted after a 4 min skate with that many quads, spins, footwork. Nobody is denying the age. We are all aging day by day. It is Yuzuru's body. He is the best judge of what it can do. He is prudent in not trying a 4Lz or a 4R. He still believes he can do the 4A. Let him try if that's what he wants. I am afraid that he may miss the opportunity to win a third Olympic gold. He lost too many points on the 4A at the nationals. Any clean triple will get more points than that. Anyway, it is his life. I don't agree with the comparison with Federer at age 40 either.

Whatever; just my thoughts and observations! He's only going to be hurting more with his recovery time lessened in an Olympic season! It's right on point with Federer who's breaking down and had to pretty much withdraw from competition after competition this season! I think we're finally rid of him after his dismal showing at Wimbledon! You don't get better at 40 or 41; same with Figure Skating or Plushenko would still be leading the Russian team! :D:40beers::wall::barrel

Hanyu is 27, not 40. Not even 31. Plushenko helped Russia win the team gold at that age.

Please remember this is Hanyu's cheer thread. Concerns for his health are appreciated but I think you may be crossing the line.

Lol, he' not actually 40.

When Hanyu was 17 his lips would turn blue at the end of FS and at 18-21 he'd collapse on the ice. Believe it or not, but he actually seems less winded at the end of the FS these days than a few years ago.

Dude probably didn't slept any between the SP and FS, doing a dozen interviews.

Interesting analysis. I think he is right that Yuzuru is not likely to get the 4A by the Olympics.

My advice to Yuzuru is- Go for the third OGM. It is more attainable than the 4A at this time. Go to worlds 2022 and go for the 4A there.

After reading the interview of Dmitriev Sr posted in GSD by TabHka, I am even more convincrd that Yuzuru should not try the 4A in the Olympics. He could actually win his third OGM if he replaces it with something he can land cleanly.

No man (except Grafstrom?) has won three OGMs. Only two women have, one of them in pairs (Rodnina), and one in singles (Henie). It will be a great achievement for Yuzuru. Why not save the 4A for worlds?

Please Yuzuru, set the right goal. An OGM is bigger than a jump.
 
I’m wondering when & how Yuzu will arrive in Beijing…will he parachute into the Opening Ceremonies? Still waiting for my Pooh Alert!

And it has already been calculated even with a 4A his base value is significantly behind Chen's. It is basically Chen's to lose whether Hanyu does the 4A or not. He is best to try and skate clean and hope Chen has mistakes. Try the 4A at worlds like you said.

For me it is a tie between him and John Curry. John Curry (RIP) is just godly.

Nothing against Plushenko, Dick Button (like 30 years ahead of his time), Yagudin, and of course Nathan Chen who are all historic Champions too, and so many others, but those are my 1a and 1b.

Agreed.

I hope he goes for that 4A. I mean, why else even bother to compete at the Oly again?
He's already a legend. He has nothing to prove to anybody else. The only one who's in competition with is himself. I say go for it. I'd rather have him lose trying.
