Dunno if anyone else is watching this, but there's a new anime about men's figure skating just started. Trailer here, I watched the first episode on crunchyroll.com.

Bit early to pass much judgement on it, but it's interesting that they have an actual skater/choreographer, Kenji Miyamoto, helping with the choreo for the programmes.

Actually, the fun bit is guessing which real skaters the characters might be based on. Main Russian guy Victor will be pretty obvious to most here, I think. ;)

Evgeni Plushenko.:plush: This is obvious ;)

I liked it, it was funny and the opening was beautiful and I like that there's detail in how the choreography was done. Overall the animation is really good. I'm going to keep watching.

OMG, that is SO NOT Evgeni Plushenko. Did you see any flailing? I did not notice any flailing... Did you see a preening egomaniac? I did not see a preening egomaniac.
And although he thinks he's hot stuff, Plushenko is no androgynous Adonis. With his skating artistry and kind spirit I think Victor is perhaps Stephane Lambiel, or more likely David Bowie (if David Bowie was a skater).

And Yuri is NOT Hanyu. Hanyu was never defeated because he lacked "nerves." Hanyu lacked stamina. And Hanyu had early success. I think that Yuri could be Oda. Short, and younger than he looked, under-performed in competition.

But I prefer to believe that these characters are original.

The skating is beautiful but I wish it was more down into the ice. It's like the plane of the ice is not horizontal and the skaters are a couple inches above it. There is no relation to the ice, no blade marks. But these are frivolous complaints. The animation and drawings are stunning, the opening credits are thrilling. I cannot wait for Episode 2!

LOL! Victor mainly inspiration was Plushenko. He is incredible popular in Japan, I can show thousands mangas, anime figures about him. He is an artistry skater. The Japanese people adore him since....from the beginning. He was the most popular foreign athlete in every sports not once in Japan. Many people begun to start to learn Russian language because of him. When he was in a Japanese TV show he was the twitter trend in Japan. He is a kind person, the Japanese people like his personality so much!!!
Plushenko performes in Japanese shows many times every years. In 2010 Plushenko ordered a conatiner because he wanted to take every gift in Russia! Gifts were more than 500 kg.
Plushenko is Yuzuru's idol from his childhood, even his hair cute was like Plushenko's hair cute. Plushenko thinks Yuzuru is the best!! etc.

And about his skating. If you would know Plushenko's movements, skating you recognize his moves in Victor's skating. How Victor moves his hands, Biellmann spin etc.

Do you know Maya Plisetskaya, Roberto Bolle, Filin( The choreographer in Bolshoi) Yuri Smekalov, praised Plushenko's skating???

I like that Victor Nikiforov is literally just Evgeni Plushenko and they got PLUSHENKO'S ACTUAL CHOREOGRAPHER TO DO THIS ANIME https://twitter.com/tiffako/status/779897095050231808
and look at this! This is a fan page but interesting https://www.instagram.com/polunin.plushenko_art/

And I'm not the only one who think he is Victor

The thing is, regardless of how far Victor is actually similar to Plushenko, Victor is clearly how some of Plushenko's fans saw Plushenko.

As someone who never had much time for the guy myself, it makes me screw my face up and go "really??", but it's sweet, I guess.

For those who are interested, here is link to a podcast of my daughter's and my conversation about Yuri on Ice. She is a student of animation and anime (a self-described "weeaboo") with a lot of interesting insights as to why Yuri on Ice looks as good as it does, its intended audience and stunning homoerotica.

http://momcastonice.tumblr.com/post/151527079474/momcast-on-ice-episode-1-born-to-make-history

(My contributions are mainly babbling about the beauty of the work, my obsession with all the ways Victor is not Plushenko and all the ways Yuri is not Hanyu, and my petty gripe that the skating seems to take place a few inches above the ice.)

You think what you want because this is a fictive story, no one says this is an anime about Plushenko's life or about anyone else life. But I show why most of the viewers think the main inspiration was Plushenko:

-he is Russian
-he is incredible popular in Japan since 1998 and they were amazed by his looks: his blond hair, icy blue eyes https://www.instagram.com/p/BGKr5kRy6yP/ - he was the Russian prince from fairy tales
-his midle name is Victorovich
-he was 27 when he came back to the competition( Vancouver), Victor's age
-the Japanese call him emperor today, and think he is a living legend
-he could do Biellmann spin
-he adores the quads and thinks that is very important in the men skating
-his anchievements: four medals at OGs, 4 time GPF winner etc...
-his skating style, his hands similar to Victor's style
-he has rock star-like charisma
- many fans thought Yuri's character also similar to Plushy:

Victor Nikiforov, a 27-year-old "living legend" who has garnered the attention of the world. He is a skater who has won five consecutive world championships. He is popular with men and women of all ages, and he has a rock star-like charisma. Yūri has been chasing after him since he was a child. Victor begins to take an interest in Yūri for a strange reason.

The show's story revolves around Yūri Katsuki, who carried all of Japan's hopes on his shoulders to win at the Gran Prix Finale ice skating competition, but suffered a crushing defeat. He returns home to Kyushu and half feels like he wants to retire, and half feels like he wants to continue ice skating. With those mixed feelings swirling inside him, he confines himself inside his parents house. Suddenly the five-time consecutive world championship ice skater Victor Nikiforov appears before him, and along with him is Yuri Plisetsky, a young Russian figure skater who is already defeating his seniors. Victor and both Yuris take up the challenge on an unprecedented Gran Prix series. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...al-character-designs-october-premiere/.104794
-some fan arts, japanee mangas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6wh_uSorY8&t=54s and these are a Japanese manga artist's works http://chihiromangaart.tumblr.com/page/5

But you can imagine anyone to that role.:)

Review on ANN of the first two episodes.

"Yuri!!! on Ice differentiates itself from the average sports anime by starring adults (mostly, since Yurii P. is 15) who are already the best in the world at their sport. This spares us the high school antics that sometimes seem like an inseparable part of the genre. There's still some of the typical training angst, but that's already being de-emphasized in favor of the characters' expressiveness as artists/competitors. As subject matter for a sports show, ice skating has a bonus perk in being both a sport and an art. Akin to dance, skating ties the characters' emotions directly into their athletic performances in a different way from chasing around balls for points."

(Evgenia Medvedeva is Into It.)

Aaaand an article on the making of/research involved.

When I came here again I rewatched your post and you used this word : adonis. And I remembered for this article: EVGENI PLUSHENKO - A SKATER FOR THE 21st CENTURY
http://plushwinner.narod.ru/eng/eng_article050.htm by an American journalist.
"He is at the peak of his technical ability, a blond Adonis with the face and flawless pink and white complexion of a mischievous cherub painted by Rubens."

And you absolutely don't know his personality.

About the anime:

https://twitter.com/en_eeen/status/787681860658745345 the main characters

Do you recognize Plushenko's movement? This decided the debate Victor is based of Plushy https://twitter.com/chirimen10/statu...14531584942080
and the real movement from ice https://twitter.com/raikaira/status/787674482504667136

Sigh. Clearly we have opposite views about Plushenko's looks. Yes, obviously, Plushenko is a 27 year-old Russian champion. For me, replace "blond hair" with "stringy mullet" and "icy blue" with "beady." However, it does not matter whether I think he is ugly in the face and flails artlessly; the Japanese, I guess, are enthralled with him and are okay with fan-fic where Plushenko engages in sexual innuendo with a sensitive young Japanese skater. Oooookaaaayyy.

I think you are ugly. Inside.

Oh jeezus. Seriously?

Lala: Victor is Plushy, everything about him is Plushy, so Plushy, only Plushy and forever Plushy and nothing but Plushy.

JTI: He's not Plushy because I hate Plushy, ewwww.

Guess what, you're both wrong.

But if we're discussing who's based on whom, apparently Yurii is based on Julia Lipnitskaya and Yuuri on Tatsuki Machida.

To move things on topic:

It's well animated, has got decent plot, and is hilariously over the top, especially in terms of fanservice, although making mountains out of molehills is not far behind, with some major what-the-eff moments. I'll be sticking with it.

You are right about our debate with "just tuned in".. :D But Victor is Plushy.. Everybody knows it who is fan of Yoi. The people started to see his old videos. https://twitter.com/search?f=tweets...henko -petraev -RT -kanna_ plushenko&src=savs

My thoughts so far:

- Viktor is so Plushy.
- But I actually think R-Yuri is Artur - as he could have been, if he broke in a different way from his treatment by the RuFed.
- J-Yuri is very adorable and extremely relatable.
- I saw the music bait-and-switch coming but that didn't make it any less hilarious.
- J-Yuri, your Eros is totally not pork cutlet bowls.
- R-Yuri has Jason's spins in episode 3.

And Viktor is my favourite character. Everything he does is hilarious.

I was reserving judgement, but OK, fine, I am dead on the floor after Ep 3. Because while trashy queerbait fanservice is one thing, and sometimes all we can hope for when actual lgbt characters are not going to be included openly, the show seems like it's really breaking free of that. This gay subtext is text. Yuuri is examining his sexuality, his own sexual and gender expression, and whether or not he and Victor become a couple, this is lovely to see. And deals with issues of "femininity" in male figure skating generally. And I should not have had coffee in my mouth, during that one line of Yuuri's, watching Viktor. You know which one.

I loved both the SPs we saw. Had to go rewatch Stephane Lambiel's Flamenco LP afterwards.

More links: article about the costume design.

Interview with Javier Fernandez:

He comments on his relationship with Plushenko. He says Plushenko is a great athlete and a great person. He gets along very well with him. P. loves all kinds of sports, among them football and golf. They have talked about how Javi and Yuzu have been pushing the level of the sport higher with their difficult elements. Javi has great respect for P., as he has won everything there is to win!

How is Plushenko at short distances? Who you go out with to party in Canada? He says Plushenko is one the greatest persons and skaters ever, and makes him laugh a lot.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLx7EtFgZs5/ Yuzuru's was asked what was the heart beat moment on ice?
He told that it's when he watches his idol's skating video. And his best heart beat moment on ice was when he had practiced with Plu at Sochi Olympics.

We are back with MomCast on Ice - Episode 2/3: Quadruple Entendre

http://momcastonice.tumblr.com/post/152266442889/momcast-on-ice-episode-23-quadruple-entendre-a

We discuss the implications of animated workplace sexual harassment, and learn Dog Facts. Also, we dissect the character of Russian Yurio, the troubled teen. And my daughter explains the some of the fine points of anime.

Mostly, we talk about animated workplace sexual harassment. I’m not ashamed to say that I am a bit of a prude, and I find Victor’s behavior towards Yuri quite inappropriate. It makes Yuri uncomfortable, and as he is the point-of-view character, I too, am uncomfortable with Victor’s clear disregard for Yuri’s personal space, "quadruple entendres" and what can easily be taken for sexual advances. If in fact Victor is not interested in a sexual relationship with Yuri, then perhaps he is dooming Yuri to disappointment, as Yuri has now determined that the way to catch Victor’s eye is to move in a womanly fashion and he has sought to do just that. I guess time will tell if Victor purports to be straight or bi.

I squeamishly look forward to the next episode when Yuri and Victor celebrate Yuri's win by eating PCB together, sensually.

I suppose @lala will tell us whether Plushenko has ever provocatively handled the face and touched the lips of a sensitive, queer Japanese lad and asked “Will you satisfy me?” Also, Lala can tell us how Yakov is Mishin, and whether Plushenko has a big dog and lives alone. Maybe between his marriages.

ETA: My favorite part of Ep 3 is when Yuri and Yurio are looking through Victor's old costumes and Yurio says, "Some of these are stupid." I know I've seen that black half-skirt number lots of times, and ditto the white thing with the feather epaulets. Johnny Weir, maybe? A better fan than I will probably recall.

How is everyone watching it? My daughter said she has a lot of popups.

I signed up for a trial of premium crunchyroll. So I can watch it pretty much straight away with no popups.

Before I did that I was just scouring youtube. But you have to be quick.

@just tuned in
