I don’t know if it’s right to have Retton in the mix. The difficulty level has increased so much since Retton’s gold medal.

With compulsories: Miller and Dawes

Without compulsories: Biles and Raisman

Amy Chow was competitive with or without as a specialist.

See, I never thought Dawes with her bow legs ever really excelled at compulsories. She certainly benefitted from reputation boosts towards the mid nineties but, nah.

Nastia is the best ever in my eyes, better than Miller. Gabby is up there too. I would never begrudge Biles talent, but neither she or Raisman were ever my cup of tea.

Uh, if you're counting awards, Raisman should be considered here.

I would rather see the bowed legs of Dawes than the double jointed pencil point knees and elbows of Liukin.

Miller had better lines than both of them.
Agreed. Liukin always seemed a bit floppy/underpowered to me, with only twisting elements and barely a double back.

I liked Carly Patterson's gymnastics the best. She had the best of both worlds - excellent line and powerful tumbling. Closest US gymnast to the ultimate standard Podkopayeva.

Biles is clearly the best U.S gymnast of all time, and it isnt even close. Some consider Biles the best gymnast ever, so of course she is by a ton the best U.S gymnast ever when no other U.S gymnast would even make top 10 all time. A very distant 2nd best is probably Liukin, particularly with all the medals she was robbed of by controversial judging, but you could make a case for Miller or maybe Shawn Johnson too. Maybe even Raisman based on longevity I guess. So any of those.

I also think Biles is clearly the best.

But then again, I'm very biased as I couldn't stand Shannon Miller. I used to call her Miss Prissy.

Well bias or not, knowing Biles eclipses Miller with ease is not biased. Biles record at this point destroys Miller in every single category. Even in Olympics 4 Olympic Golds including the coveted AA (which Miller was too weak to ever win) overcomes 7 medals to 5 but only 2 golds.

Comparing the two in sheer ability, taking into account their eras and standards of the time, Biles is light years better on vault and floor, and Miller a bit better on bars and beam I guess. Again that is taking into account the eras since obviously if you put Miller's 90s routines vs Biles's today she would get destroyed on ever apparatus, but that wouldnt be fair. Easy to see who comes ahead overall in this category too.

And any so called tougher competition for Miller doesnt amount to much. Her competition might have been a bit better since some of the former world superpowers have fallen off bigtime, but not that much. Gogean winning 20 world/ Olympic medals in that era, and a gymnast like Milo becoming the first to win every apparatus gold lays waste to any small suggestion of this being some super tough era. The All Around had tougher fields then by quite a bit, although even here Miller won both her world AA titles with major mistakes so they still werent that great

Top 10 U.S gymnast ever:

1. Biles

------enormous gap-----

2. Liukin
3. Johnson and Miller tied
5. Raisman
6. Retton
7. Dawes
8. Wieber
9. Sacramone
10. dunno, Zmeskal maybe

Top 10 world gymnasts ever:

1. Casvlaska
2. Silivas
3. Biles
4. Commaneci
5. Khorkina
6. Podkopayeva
7. Latynina
8. Shushunova
9. Tourischeva and Korbut tied
11. Milosovici
12. Liukin
13. Boginskaya
14. Miller and Gogean tied

As you can see Biles is the only one who even makes top 10 in world all time, and she makes top 3 (or at worst 4th if you put Commaneci over her which is reasonable).
