Was This Personal or Professional: (UHC CEO murder)

Feel free to answer or not - do you have investments in private healthcare?

No, not directly. I have a simple, passive, boring investment strategy. I do not own any individual stocks or anything with a tilt toward healthcare. I do own shares in broad index funds -- e.g., Total Stock Market index funds -- that have underlying investments in healthcare companies.

I think the point stands that if you have a healthcare safety net you are more likely to be able to take risks in your professional life.

The question is whether Obamacare is sufficient for that. I'd argue yes, at least for younger entrepreneurs, and it might be preferable to 40+% federal tax rates. Bernie Sanders was polling very well in the Democratic primary until he unveiled his universal healthcare plan, which included an honest assessment of what it would cost. He hemorrhaged support after that. People say they want it, but don't want to pay for it. Which means they don't really want it.

I get your point that many people may be passively profiting from industries that they don't support, but there are plenty of mutual fund options that don't include holdings in health insurance companies, and divesting from healthcare does not automatically guarantee a 20%+ loss to one's portfolio.

No, divesting from healthcare does not guarantee a 20% loss, but making significant changes to 17-20% of the US economy (what healthcare spending represents) will create shockwaves in the economy that will almost certainly result in enormous stock market decline. I actually agree with Barbk that it's not a reason not to accept the status quo, but we have to be realistic about the consequences. Maybe there's a way to get A without causing B that some very smart group of people can figure out.

In terms of exposure: Any passive investment strategy is going to include healthcare stocks, and most active funds will also have significant exposure to healthcare stocks. But that's almost beside the point because the knock-on effects will be severe. There are good reasons why neither party has touched this even when controlling all three branches of government.

A person has been detained for possession of a fake ID as well as a weapon similar to that used in the murder. He was reported by individuals at a McDonalds in Altoona, PA about a 4 hour car drive. (NBC)

Listening to the press conference right now...

Multiple fake IDs including one from NJ that he used to check into the NYC hostel; clothing that matched what the suspect was wearing in the photos released; and a 3-page manifesto that demonstrate his frame of mind & motivation. Sounds like they DEFINITELY have the guy who murdered Thompson.

ETA - they believe the gun & suppressor in his possession was made by a 3D printer; suspect has no previous arrest history anywhere in the country (that they've been able to discover); they believe he attended college in Pennsylvania; no reason to believe he had any accomplices.

Just did a quick search based on what they're saying about him, and found a shot of his high school graduation - he was valedictorian - and his Good Reads list, another image there that looks like him. He has no record. One wonders what it takes for someone to go from zero to sixty like this. I'm sure we'll find out more soon enough.

So bizarre to just be sitting there eating at a McDonald's knowing your picture is everywhere, and you've actually got all the evidence on you? After all that effort to evade?

Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of the UHC CEO, left a 4-star review of the Unabomber's manifesto: "When all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive. You may not like his methods, but to see things from his perspective, it's not terrorism, it's war and revolution."

Thank you to the McDonald's employee who did what (I'll spare you the word) "experts" would not do for selfish reasons. I hope this person gets a gigantic, life-changing reward as well as national recognition.

And, yeah, we probably need to move to PI, but clearly this person has been radicalized by the left with extreme anti-capitalist and climate change messages.

Based on his social media profile, the man who murdered the United Healthcare CEO is an Ivy leaguer and fan of Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson, Peter Thiel and other right-leaning personalities. He also attended a $40,000 per year prep school.

And yet, reading the review he wrote of the Unabomber's manifesto (which you also linked earlier), his views certainly do not align with any of the right-leaning personalities you mention.

Based on what we do know, I'm inclined to agree with PC's assessment of his political leanings, no matter how the mainstream media wants to try and spin it the opposite direction.

All we know right now is that he graduated from Penn in 2020 and that some of his media posts are kinda trad-guy. I'm sure his history will be available soon, he went to fancy schools and didn't live in a cave.

Some of the very far right groups are very anti-big corporation, anti-health care system, anti-government (and taxes) and want everything to be like it was 100 years ago. There seems to be some overlap with the far-left ideals as well in the trad community.

In any case, what does it even matter?

This kid is clearly messed up and bringing it to the political level is missing that point.

To me it reads like someone who has someone in their family or friends circle who had some illness/death attributable to environmental disaster, or continued things like ag fertilization or smog.

But we will each interpret social media in the way that supports our political viewpoints.

Here is a local article from Baltimore about the suspect -

The Mangione family is well known throughout the state.

Mangione's cousin is sitting Maryland State Delegate Nino Mangione, who represents District 42A (my note - Del. Mangione is a Republican).

The extended family owns Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, and WCBM, an AM talk radio station based out of Owings Mills.

Or maybe it's not as black/white left/right as the MSM wants to paint it?

The horseshoe theory is real! But of course if an insane violent person is involved it can only be a leftist

Some people have never met a vegan yoga mom who is also a qanon tradwife doomsday prepper and it shows.

Whoa. Those country clubs are very high-end, that’s not just “comfortable” but real wealth. Whatever health problems he might have had, his family could afford to pay for it.

On bluesky, there is a pic on his profile of a spinal fusion. That may not mean anything, but it is interesting
Whoa - the screws in the spinal fusion picture looks just like the recent surgery pictures of a good friend.

I find anarchy makes some strange bedfellows. Interviews with an accepted Trump insider, Steve Bannon, always leave me aghast. The extremes on either side never seem that far apart to me. Bannon could have just as easily went left instead of right and I'm not sure he would be so different than he is today.

Perhaps he was aware of this, but realised that he had to be that wealthy to afford it, and that others' lives would be ruined.

It's not only money. You might have the resources but pain is also a factor. Or friend or family who can't pay.

A person by the same name attended a private high school in Baltimore, Maryland, where they were a wrestler and graduated as valedictorian.

A spokesperson with the University of Pennsylvania confirmed that Mangiano attended and graduated with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering.

Super smart, handsome young man born to and raised in a financially privileged environment. Big fan of the unabomber, apparently.

This profile is an exercise in cognitive dissonance. He admires Elon Musk, one of the biggest business whores on the planet; ditto Peter Thiel, etc., yet he went after a CEO who exemplified his value system. Something is not adding up.
