Unpopular Opinions

If ice dance was scored correctly P/C wouldn't be getting higher GOE marks for their lifts and choreographic elements compared to most of the other top teams - they should score either the same as the rest of the field or lower, depending on the performance. They would also not be getting higher PCS for composition, performance, and interpretation (transitions are debatable as well).

On this note, I think half the ice dance fandom refuse to see just how extremely physically-demanding Virtue/Moir’s 2018 Olympic programs were and the way they went above-and-beyond IJS with that FD. In terms of athleticism and difficulty, they were on another stratosphere. I’m glad the broader, worldwide Olympic audience saw it and they were able to be better appreciated by them. There’s a reason they came away even bigger stars than they were before and it had nothing to do with 3,000 North Koreans being planted in V/M’s favor…:lol:. I still can’t believe some fans took that conspiracy theorist seriously.

Oh well, I’m totally rooting for P/C now but H/D should be giving them more of a run for their money in terms of skating skills even if I find P/C to be ultimately superior to every currently competing team in almost every aspect…except for lifts. Speaking of lifts, during their Igor days, I never understood how C/AB’s GOEs on their lifts started to decrease as they lost favor as that was still the most brilliant element of their partnership by 2018 and in many ways better than almost every other team competing at those Olympics outside of V/M, most notably.

I also think P/C have been found to be sloppy with their feet and body positions on the pattern dances in their earlier, dominating seasons (like not even doing proper chasses and Gabi exiting holds with sloppy posture) but it was ignored due to their “overall intangible beyond IJS quality”.

Maybe that's the case here, but this is not an unpopular opinion on FS Twitter, Tumblr and possibly Reddit at all. It's literally the only acceptable opinion. :lol:

ETA As for the conspiracy theory, I was actually surprised that person took the North Korean cheerleader route. :rofl: I mean the broken dress could be the perfect material for a conspiracy theory to happen, but in another direction, ha.

I bet you’re right. I am way too scared to step my foot on that side of fandom. There are V/M fans there I would never ever want to interact with for fear I’d get canceled over something I didn’t even do.

As for conspiracy theories, a dress one would have been so much better and juicier.

Would you say it was it an Ultra-C free dance? :D

P/C did win the FD - TES and PCS - so I guess the judges saw it differently ;)

I guess that's my unpopular opinions - I do think Davis/White was one the greatest teams

and I suppose another unpopular opinions is that Virtue/Moir was very boring to watch. Some times this doesn't feel that unpopular though? I'm not sure what opinion would be truly unpopular.
 
I wouldn’t call myself a fan of Davis/White but the last 4 or so years did make me miss the sort of dynamism they brought that would have given a real contrast to IAM style of ice dance. Zhulin isn’t really a worthy rival to that school though I did like some of his work with Bobrova/Soloviev. If only Carol Lane had more of an internationally challenging stable outside of Gilles/Poirier.

Every Korean girl looks amazing out there. It kind of surprises me why the Russians don't try to keep up with them in that regard. Wealthy parents. Most of the Russians don't have them and they recycle their costumes. Costumes can cost thousands of dollars and not every skater has that kind of funding.
 
Here are some more -

I love Linda Fratianne. She was under-appreciated, wuz robbed in 1980, and had a big influence on Women's costumes.

I will take Jersey girl Elaine Zayak over Roz and her swingy, unstable triples any day. The distance the USFSA put between them was criminal, and Zayak holds up better under IJS.

I didn't mind Scott Hamilton's commentary or his unhidden excitement while commentating

I find Kwan's 2002-03 Worlds LP boring and I never ever rewatched it online after the initial telecast (and I rewatch a lot of skaters and their programs)

I preferred M/D to G/G at Lillehammer

I really liked Flatt's EoE SP in 2011-12. Yes, she was a moving sunflower being attacked by a swarm of bees in the FW, but it worked for me. Speaking of which, I was always entertained by Slutskaya's choreography.
 
I'm not sure if this is "unpopular" per se but there does seem to be some dubiousness about M/G's free (mostly the second half) but I just watched their performance from Sochi and think it is really promising.

Million bucks, too right. To me they look like overdone wedding dresses. Well tailored but too much.
 
Despite all the cries at the time, Michelle Kwan didn't do that badly with her first time and one-time stint with COP. Look at how all the top contenders were scoring at their GP debuts in the 2004-05 season. She still got bronze small medals for the SP and LP.

As a huge Shibs fan, I have to say, I'm a disappointed in that I never saw them coached by anyone other than Marina. Out of the three world medalist teams that were with Igor/Marina, the Shibs suffered the most from the split because they were still young and in the essential developmental stage when the split happened (as were Chock/Bates). Even now, I still think they were only able to hit like 75-80% of their potential with her, and had to fend for themselves most of the time (creating their own programs, editing their own music, coming up with their own concepts). Sure they liked the creative aspect, but they could have used a stronger coaching team to help direct their movement/choreography and help them come up with new lift positions, etc. Their success is a testament to them considering Marina had no idea what to do with them whatsoever, and despite her huge team, she was no tech coach to help them hit levels and such.

Orrrrrrrr....... :sekret:...... we now know where Julie McDonough has been busying herself. Fortunately she only had to remove just a few beads and sequins from her daughter's old dresses to outfit the entire Korean team, too! lol
 
I’m just going to admit it…this may be an unpopular opinion because I never read any post saying this while I have read other posts salivating over other men, but I find Evan Bates the most attractive man currently competing in ice dance right now. I don’t know why. I just do. I kept it to myself for so long.

And I don't want to derail this thread, but have to quickly add to this topic that Brian Johnson in tight skating trousers is one of the porniest things in skating right now

Now I understand your arguments about Evan having good rhythm and dance moves. You’ve been paying close attention … and have noticed things the rest of us haven’t! ??

Is it because he seems like he is always eager to please and therefore would be a present, attentive, and tender lover?
 
I really don't get Nathan Chen's PCS. To me it's jut a whole lot of nothing between his elements, until the jumps are done and he lets loose a bit for the 20 seconds of his choreographic sequence, regardless of the music.

Oh, and add me to the list of those who loved Liza's muumuus. They really worked on her, and they made her stand out. And the purple colour of her FP one was gorgeous on her

I don't like most of the Russian ladies costumes - I find them to be too 'busy' and with a lot of unnecessary straps and crisscrosses thrown in. Which makes Liza's muumuus even better.

I dislike bedazzled competitive skates. It takes away from the look (that Edea skates already take away from, since they look so clunky)

Evan is definitely attractive. It's just that next to Chock it's hard to notice that he's there.

Evan is definitely attractive, as are most figure skaters. The most attractive man currently in ice dancing ? That's highly debatable, LOL. I think what make Evan attractive is that he seems very approachable. I mean I think he's someone that I can approach and maybe even ask out. Cizeron? Nope, I'd be too chicken sh*t, LOL; I'd imagine he wants to be with another Greek God.

See, I don’t find Cizeron attractive.
 
If a skater is unable do a jump without it being Rippon style, it should not count as a feature towards GOE.
I dislike cantilevers, especially when they're used in every program and don't fit the program at all. Same with besti squats, and the move where one heel drags along the ice.
