U.S. Men in 2018 - articles & latest news

I think it would have been really hard for the U.S. men to have gotten a third spot for 2014, anyway. I was fine with Miner going in 2013. 2011 was more questionable, though.

You could argue that if Jeremy being left off in 2013 motivated him to take 2014 Nationals more seriously.

NBCSN is still replying the men's LPs - if they were going to hype Nathan, they could have done a better fluff piece with him not coming across as so dull. He seems like an interesting guy off the ice - doesn't he skateboard a lot?

It's almost like USFS has forgotten how boring Evan Lysacek still was after 2010. Literally the most stale OGM the USFS has ever had. Yep - I said it.

Did they really replay Max's SP yesterday and not his FS? That's a kind of cruel kick in the face.

They've never played his LP - I pulled it on YouTube but it was from a stream.

I wonder if USFS will have a clip of Max in the "Rinkside Reactions" that they've been posting to YouTube after every segment. I don't think they've posted the men's LP Rinkside Reactions yet.

USA Gymnastics is also not looking very good these days . . .

USA Gymnastics has, well, a quite a bit of fixing to do. I'm still flabbergasted over how Dr. Nassar happened for (looks like) every U.S. World and Olympic team in the last 20 years. And that's by far not their only problem.

Not to be a troll, but Nathan is DULL! He's right out of SLC; the home of Mormons! What would you like him to do; get drunk and dance on tables? Not everyone can have huge personalities like Rippon, Weir, and Brown; so over the top! Being dull is not a crime and it doesn't bother me that he's quiet and unassuming! Eldridge or Kwan weren't real characters and they did fairly well for the country over a very long period of time! Nothing's wrong with being a little withholding! :barrel

Why do they do anything the way they do? They show it in little pieces and then they wonder why they can't get ratings for it.

Well, my mom's happy. She saw the schedule for last night and thought there was skating on network. My parents don't have cable TV. I do, but just Broadcast Basic, so I don't get NBCSN or Olympic Channel. I've sadly become an "every 4 year" observer - and I have several dozen VHS tapes from when Nationals/Worlds/GP skating was on ABC/ESPN. The last competition I recorded was Sochi.

Me too! Skating was so huge after Tonya/Kerrigan drama! It was playing on all 4 networks, prime time telecasts on Fox; not to mention the Pros got in on the $$-train! Those were great days, but after Plushenko and Yagudin rivalry, it just hasn't been the same! Asada and Kim gave a small blip of interest 10 years ago, but since then it's been a graveyard where you actually have to search for coverage! It was nice to see Evgeny one more time and win another GOLD for his team, but that's really been it for the most part! The Olympic channel's helped; esp. going back to past Games so I can re-tape them! I wonder will Olymp. Channel survive after these games? :40beers:  :barrel :plush: :respec:

Not in a non-premium line up where you live, I do not have premium cable, and I have NBCSN.

Just depends what service you use! I probably have OC & NBCSN as part of my premium basic on RCN! Comcast, TCI, & Satellite all have different lineup requirements for various parts of the country I guess! :COP: :lynch: :watch: :respec:

I have Spectrum- the first 60-70 channels, and no packages. If I wanted NBCSN I'd have to subscribe to digital cable, and I can't find a carrier for Olympic Channel. And I'm in a good-size market - Albany NY, not in the sticks.

United had NBCSN; I watched a replay of men's short on a plane.
Sadly, Marriot in San Diego does not.

And I am in the sticks, and I have it.

I'd need to upgrade to digital cable and that's out of my price range. I'm paying $84/month for cable and Turbo WiFi as it is.

I can't even find a local carrier for Olympic Channel.

I do have digital, but NBCSN was part of the basic package. My cable company does carry the Olympic Channel, but it's on a more expensive package.

Shit... when did Boitano shave his head??? They just did a fluff piece on Calgary '88 - I didn't recognize him.

As I pointed out in my post, them looking bad had nothing to do with the selection process, which is why I think US Figure Skating will have no long-term PR problems with the selection process.

If, on the other hand, USFS is hiding a secret like USA Gymnastics, then they'll have PR problems and a federal investigation on their hands. Though a topic for another thread, I do wonder if Figure Skating has any coaches/staff like that. On their website most of the people banned are for sex abuse allegations, so I'd imagine they are strict about it when they find out, but one wonders if there's anyone with allegations they're sweeping under the rug. I hope not. (I don't have anyone specific in mind, but if this year has shown us anything it's that creeps in power tend to be protected by those around them)

Well it definitely wasn't a shock from years gone by that there was abuse of these kids! Many even knew how sleazy a coach was only to send their kid to them anyway with the excuse, "well I have a daughter so it'll be ok!" There were shocking tales that came out in the 90's; some of the coaches continued to work for a while before being run off! :kickass:
