The Voice - Spring 2017 (threads merged)

It must be tough to be on Team Gwen. Lots of good performances tonight.

On Team Gwen, I definitely thought that Hunter, Brennley, and Troy were the three strongest. I find Brennley annoying for some reason. Maybe because, unlike Gwen, I don't find her "authentic." Or maybe it's just because Gwen went on about what a pretty little girl she is with little mention of her singing. But she's talented and earned her spot. I want Hunter to enunciate better. I hadn't noticed that before, so hopefully it was just an issue for tonight.

Quizz was cute and talented, but not ready for the show. That was a bad song choice for JChosen. Bummer for him.

IMO, Lilli and Jesse clearly were the best on Team Adam. But I thought Adam's reaction was out of proportion to the results. That was not "by far" the best vocal of the night. Adam is such a salesman.

I thought Johnny was better than Mark, but it was clear before the voting that Adam wanted to keep Mark, so no surprise that he chose to save him. I don't think Adam helped with the song choices. That song didn't do much to showcase Mark's voice. I thought Josh was painful to listen to at points. That song wasn't in his range. Hannah was cute, but she's got control issues.

I couldn't get past Hunter's mumbling. I know the song well, yet only picked up a couple of words. I hope he plays it back and learns from it.

My favorite is still Lauren. I remember how much I enjoyed her blind audition and she hasn't disappointed. Since I'm not into country, I'm shocked as heck that she's my pick.

Thanks to those supporting and/or voting for Lauren! She is my cousin's daughter, so it is really exciting for all of us to see her do so well. She has always been a bit shy and humble - that is not a fake persona. I like that she is a more quiet/reserved singer, because listening to huge voices and scream-singing for 2 hours is tiring. (Or maybe I'm just old.)

For the 1st time I picked all 6 singers who advanced last night. I agree with @Allskate that Hunter should enunciate better but that's good advice for most of the male singers. Some of them I could understand only because I knew the song.

IMO Jesse did have "the best vocal of the night". Sir Duke is extremely hard to sing, it has lots of words & you have to get into the syncopation or you sound stupid. In fact that's true of most of Stevie Wonder's songs. He did a wonderful job IMO.

@KCC, how exciting for your family that Lauren is one of the top 12. She has a beautiful voice & it doesn't hurt that she's a beautiful girl. I think she will be in the final 4.

Before the live shows I felt Hunter, Stephanie and to a lesser extent Lilli stood out from the rest. But the ones that performed well at the live performances were Hunter, Lauren, Stephanie and Troy in that order. I still think Hunter is the leader of the pack. I didn't think America would like him, but apparently they do so far, having both songs from battle and knockout rounds reach the top 30 prior to the live shows. Hopefully he can keep up the momentum. Alicia must be kicking herself for letting him go to Jack who lost the knockout, came back, and immediately left. Lauren was the surprise of the night b/c I usually never enjoy a country vocalist. Maybe it's the song? Let's' see if she continues to impress me. Although Troy did a good job with his version of 'A Case of You', I like James Wolpert's version better. I even downloaded James' version, the only song I've ever downloaded from the 'Voice'. However the studio version isn't as compelling as the live performance. It seems like there is less soul in the studio version.

Still don't get why Adam is so enthusiastic about Mark.

Looks like Gwen has the strongest and Blake the weakest team.

Why did they bring back the comeback artist? Most of them don't make it to the top 12 anyways.

I don't think it's the song. I think she's been strong from the beginning. I'm not a country music fan, but I think she's really good. I think she's going to go very far. I'll be surprised if she isn't in the finale. Hunter, too.

But I totally agree with you about Alicia being stupid to choose Jack. Again and again.

Although Hunter is a front-runner for me I thought his song last night was pitched too high for him resulting in him sounding reedy & squeaky to me. America apparently disagreed because he was #16 in iTunes. (Also 2 of his previous songs are still charting in the top 200.) Ten of the 12 charted in the top 100 & Lilli was #117. Mark didn't chart at all so he may be going home. I didn't like his performance at all & think he's not ready.

No one really blew me away last night. I have several favorites but either song choice didn't wow me or performance wasn't up to previous songs. Lilli is one of my favs but don't give her a Shania Twain song. That's the kiss of death. Some of the other choices were overused & some were just not suited to the voice.

iTunes:
7 Brennley (she seems a little pretentious to me but beautiful voice - Linda Ronstat sang it better)
10 Lauren
16 Hunter
27 Chris
40 Vanessa (A Song For You is so overdone in the 1st place & I hated her version, at least she didn't wear that stupid hat)
42 Stephanie
46 Jesse (he should always play guitar)
59 TSoul (he butchered Always on My Mind)
67 Aliyah (give her something current & age-appropriate)
77 Troy
116 Lilli

My favorites are Hunter, Jesse, Aliyah, Lilli, & Brennley. I like Vanessa's voice but I feel that she's trying to be Janelle Monae.

@taf2002, I agree with most of what you said. I think Brennley is talented. She sings better than Taylor Swift does. But she reminds me of Taylor in that she seems like she's trying to be sincere and authentic, but is pretty phony. OTOH, I didn't think that Vanessa was trying to be anyone else. She seems to be very comfortable in her own skin and very real.

ITA with you what you said about song choices. That was the biggest problem with last night. Not all of them were terrible choices, but none of them were great choices. Lauren needs to find something that contains a little bit more in terms of dynamics and emotion.

I just realized that no country male singers made it to the live shows. There were a low turnout of make country singers that made it past the blinds this year compared to the other years.

Overall, it was not that great of a performance last night, including Hunter. I would have to say the best was Vanessa.

It looks like Brennley might make it to the finals based on being the only one to chart in the i-Tunes top 10 the first week. In the past seasons, most of the winners charted in the iTunes top 10 the first week or was the first contestant to chart the iTunes top 10. I don't think she's that great. Lauren is better. Brennley could be another Danielle Bradley. Blake could be kicking himself for letting her go and be coached by his girlfriend. Gwen might have 2 in the finale.

I hope Mark is not another Chris Jamison, overextending his stay. Man, Adam really knows how to pitch for his contestants. I still don't know what he sees in Mark. Troy should've been saved, although his 'save me' song was boring.

Hunter's performance last night was his weakest besides his blind audition. I didn't like the arrangement and his enunciation was worse than last week. I hope he steps it up next week or he might be going home sooner than expected.

Many of the song choices missed the mark. I hope that Lauren sings a more lively song that shows off her range more. She is getting way too much of the "comforting" edit, and that will work against her if it keeps up. It was fun to watch Lauren play off of Blake a bit when the team sang Crippled Inside.

As for the others, I liked Chris Blue, Hunter, and sometimes Vanessa, Aliyah and Brennley. It will be interesting to see how things go the next few weeks.

I enjoyed this week's performances better than last week. Definitely some better song choices.

I am in no way a country fan but I love Lauren. There's an honesty, and simplicity, in her voice that really cuts through. And Chris Blue is a STAR.

Everyone charted on iTunes:

#3 Lauren
#10 Hunter
#13 Brennley
#16 Chris
#17 Jesse
#36 Lilli
#55 Stephanie
#59 TSoul
#67 Vanessa
#68 Aliyah
#69 Mark

If there's a sing-off between Mark & Aliyah then I think Mark will be going home. I would rather it be TSoul or Stephanie because I don't like their styles at all. I'm getting used to Vanessa's (stupid) hat but I still think she's channeling Janelle Monae. It's not just the hat, it's also the black-and-white clothes.

I enjoyed the top 6 people above. Brennley & Lauren sounded absolutely beautiful. Lilli was good but I want Adam to give her a current song, not one that was sung to perfection in the 1960's. (Gene Pitney :swoon:) Chris was a little hokey & the song is way overdone but he still sounded good. I didn't know Jesse's song but as he sang I liked it more & more. I like Hunter's voice but I don't think I'd ever buy his downloads.

There's something I can't stand about Aliyah's singing voice. Probably the combination of a very nasally tone (which I strongly dislike), poor pronunciation, and being slightly off tune most of the time... It's unfortunate, because I think she has one of the most likeable personalities on this season's show. Plus, she's very pretty. Just wish her voice was much better...

I thought Mark would be going home until they sang for the save. "Issues" was a bad song choice for Stephanie.

Exactly my reaction to the situation. I wanted to like Stephanie because she had such a compelling backstory but I hated her tortured style. I want music to be entertaining. Issues was horrible but honestly I didn't like anything she sang.

I think Adam needs to start choosing songs for Mark; I get that Mark is picking things that HE likes, but 1) they don't show off his ability at all and 2) they don't really appeal to the Voice audience.

Maybe that's Adam's plan, so that he doesn't overtake Jesse or Lilli.

Yay! Hunter and Lilli rebounded from last week. Hunter is back on top again (in my book). It looks like Mark may stay another week until all of the coaches' saves are eliminated. In that case T Soul is probably the next to leave. Then maybe Mark will be gone.

I would vote for either Jesse or Lauren because I kind of liked both from the start. The others leave me cold.

Coaches' saves? AFAIK there aren't any left. It's purely voters & tweeters now.

I believe moebius means the people saved by the coaches when the final 12 were determined. So Mark and T-Soul are the remaining coaches' saves.

I wonder if the contestants are told what questions they would be asked on the results show ahead of time. It seems that most have an answer prepared, unlike the beauty pageants where the contestants don't know the question ahead of time, hence some of them have trouble answering the questions.

Is anyone still watching? I thought most of the song choices were :blah: My favorite was TSoul's At This Moment. I love that song & I love that he sang it to the melody. Apparently the download buying public doesn't agree because he was behind 6 others on iTunes. I also liked Jesse, Brennley, & Lauren. I wasn't in love with Mark's number but I thought it was his best so far. It's hard to believe Hunter beat all of them on iTunes. I hated the way he sung that song. I had to FF thru it, also FF'd thru Aliyah, Lilli, & Vanessa. Chris suffered by comparison to Bruno Mars - he was just ok.

#9 Hunter
#10 Lauren
#14 Brennley
#17 Jesse
#19 Aliyah
#22 Chris
#26 TSoul
#69 Lilli
#89 Vanessa
#99 Mark

It looks like Mark will be singing for his life again but this time I think he'll actually leave. And I predict it will be Lilli in the bottom 2 with him. Apparently people didn't like Vanessa's rap (I didn't either) enough to buy it but I think she got plenty of votes to stay in the competition based on her body of work.

I think it's very clear that Hunter and Lauren will be the final two. I don't get Hunter's appeal at all, and I like Lauren IN SPITE of the fact that she's a country singer, as I do not listen to country. I thought (meanly) that if Aliyah hadn't broken down she would be near the bottom as she didn't sing very well last night.

Overall, the only ones I like are Chris, Lauren, and Vanessa.
