The Dance Hall 9: Bring the Bling or No Beijing 2021-2022

The Shibs were great with Zoueva. As was the vast improvement of the entire U.S. dance field, when she moved in and saved us from what felt like was every single team skating a Latin program. (I forget what year that was, but it was bad). The Shibs did exactly what I hope teams will do, which is figure out who they were as a team and take a certain amount of ownership over their own material. Of course, I would have loved to see them compete four more years; but with Maia's cancer & covid, I guess fate was on their side that they met major goals by 2018.
Yes I agree. The teams were stagnating with Igor’s lack of creativity in programs and the Shibs grew up and learned who they were as a team. I really thought their Latin SD at the Olympics was a technical tour de force.

Oh yeah, as well as their Sinatra Jay Z mash up. Not to mention their Smile from Nat King Cole, plus the FD they did in 2009 my word that was epic. That should have been their 2010 FD instead of that awful Tango mashup Marina gave them.

Oh yeah, they're missed.

Some of their worst received programs were from the 2012-13 to 2014-15 season where Igor was already out of Canton. I actually liked their Memoirs of a Geisha but it needed more choreo and I noticed their speed and ease of movement decreased a bit from that period. Their Buble SD was actually good in 2013-14 but their Michael Jackson FD never came together and they didn’t have the power to really skate it all out. I thought by 2015-16, they really improved their speed and power which let them do more and ended up with excellent routines. Not just Fix You, which I do give Marina and her team credit for in polishing and fixing after Nepela, but their Coppellia SD is one of my fave SDs ever. The Shibs had consistently great SDs, with their weakest probably being their 2014-15 Paso Doble, but the Barcelona crowd seemed to love it at the GPF as did the Nats crowd.

With discussions in various threads about a probable new partner and possible new country for Annabelle Morozov, it made me wonder if there is any news on Adelina Galyavieva. I don't think she said explicitly that she was looking for a new partner after Thauron's retirement but I got the impression that she was; I hope things work out for her.

In fairness that first period, except 2014-2015, was when both Davis & White and Virtue & Moir were still there and Shibutanis were thus less of a priority. And as we now know V&M were even significantly less of a priority for Zoueva than Davis & White by then.

It is too bad they weren't an amazing rank like IAM that can take care of everyone quite well somehow, including by using a lot of coaches. Probably another reason she is snarky towards IAM now.

The Michael Jackson routine was just strange. It was a good fit for B&K, for the Shibs not so much. And there wasn't even a lot of work done it seemed to somehow make it work for them either. At that point I was getting frustrated with Zoueva since it felt like she just didn't care. She seemed to do a much better job with them once the top 2 retired awhile, and Scali joined the team.

I have only learnt now that Galyavieva and Thauron do not skate together anymore. But then again I stopped following figure skating for a while. It's a pity as they were very good together!

Can't wait for Senior patterns to be announced, although I suspect it will be the Ravensburger Waltz for 2022-23.

I hope it's the full Ravensburger Waltz and not some butchered version.

I think it’s time for them to stop avoiding the Golden Waltz.

Agreed. What are they afraid of? How to cut it into one small piece? To think that we never got to see Papadakis/Cizeron tackle the Golden Waltz as a senior-level ice dance team.

If it's going to be a waltz, I hope it's the Golden, as it hasn't been out since the 2010/11 season, whereas we had the Ravensburger in 2015/16.

I wondered if they might do the Yankee Polka? I think it was slated (or maybe rumoured) for the 2020/21 season which, understandably, ended up being a repeat of the Finnstep.

Whatever it is, I firmly agree with @VGThuy that it would be nice to see a whole pattern, not just a little segment!

I would absolutely love that.

For what they're worth, the following are currently rumored via the Russian figure skating thread:
I think the correct question might be "who hasn't broken up", because the broken up couples I can think of off the top of my head are Shanaeva/Naryzhny, Shevchenko/Eremenko, Ushakova/Nekrasov, Skoptsova/Aleshin...
Dave from TSL just said that Annabelle Morozov has teamed with Devid Narizhny (Nikolai Morozov is visiting rinks in New Jersey right now, so he was the direct source).

Ichilov & Byelikov are now listed to compete at Worlds, with Nosovitskaya & Nosovitskiy listed to sub.

From the Japanese skating thread:
Ayumi Takanami and Shingo Nishiyama — 3rd in Senior ice dance at Nationals — have split
:(
according to their respective Instagram stories - a translated version was tweeted here: https://twitter.com/inthelopodcast/status/1501736663235633155

ETA that Nishiyama has since clarified his earlier tweet - “I will not quit the ice dance competition

I should start to keep a list of post-Olympic season splits & new partnerships, but planning to wait until after Worlds at least.

Pate and Bye are going to skate to Riverdance. I believe this is the first FD announcement of the new season?

They're inspired by S/K? Is Igor their coach? What prospects do D/S have for next season? Oops I forget they have no prospects regardless.
