Ice Dance old school style! Towler & Ford were the bridge between the old school and the new style that would develop through the 1970's and ultimately pave the way for T&D and all that came after. This is a real gem!

Sorry if this was posted already but I enjoyed finding Moiseeva & Minenkov's FD from the 1976 Worlds. The program lacked any real content but their skating is so beautiful, especially in the middle section.

Who loves old school gigantic jumping and beautiful axel variations? Who doesn't? We don't get to see them nowadays but back in the 1970's, Yuri Ovchinnikov had it all going on. Held back by poor figures and Soviet politics he was one of the greatest free skaters of the era and actually won the short program at the 1975 Worlds ahead of John Curry and Toller Cranston. Here's all his best bits!

This is quite a rare program. Sandra Bezic skating with her brother Val at the 1971 Worlds in Lyon, France. I don't know of any other existing footage of Sandra skating as an amateur. Enjoy!

We mostly remember Ken Shelley for his great pairs skating with Jojo Starbuck, but we can't forget that he was the 1972 US National men's champion and was a brilliant singles skater in his own right. Here is a rare performance of Ken skating at the 1971 Worlds in Lyon, France. He placed 5th in the free - much too low given how everyone else skated - but he certainly won over the crowd. Great skating!!

He was wonderful; nowhere near as appreciated as he should have been.
When you consider that in order to compete in singles, one had to master figures also; his success in both disciplines was remarkable.

Competing in multiple disciplines was once fairly common.
However, the time and effort required to achieve mastery/success at the elite level would be prohibitive for most to even attempt it,

The youtube channel by Sk8FraSch has recently uploaded videos from the 1987 Worlds. I especially enjoyed the ones showing the compulsories, OSP, and FD in the ice dance event.

Watching the compulsories from these worlds, I have to say that Annenko and Sretensky had some absolutely glorious posture, extension, and line. They were beautifully smooth too. But I can understand why they often finished behind B&B and K&P as the patterns they made on the ice weren't quite as impressive. But I did like their Westminster Waltz and Blues better than Wilson & McCall's.

I would've thought the Viennese Waltz would've suited A&S very well but I found their OSP underwhelming, especially in comparison to Klimova & Ponomarenko's. The video of K&P's legendary waltz that Sk8FraSch posted includes their marks and it was nice to see them receive a 6.0 from at least one judge.

And I believe that Ken (and JoJo) were also attending regular high school (at Downey High) while training for Grenoble in 1968.

I don't know, but those arm variations during the 2F and 2Lz look a lot like what we now call a "Rippon".

It is interesting to note that she was doing the arm position on jumps where doubles were required, and in 1988 she was doing the required 2A from a counter with hands on her hips. It goes to show how hard Ito was working to get any recognition from the judges.

Just listen to Toller's whole commentary on this performance. She was going for the equivalent of level 4 and +3GOEs on everything relative to standards of the time.

11 year old Midori Ito with a short program exhibition at 1980 NHK Trophy that would have been very competitive had she actually competed vs Denise Biellmann and Katarina Witt.

Commentators Emi Watanabe and Minoru Sano were pretty excited too.

Isn't this fantastic? The free program exhibition has been around for years but this one was new to me. Brilliant skating so far ahead of her time!

It is funny to note that footage of Norbert Schramm is used to demonstrate the 3F, but he appears to take off from the outside edge :2faced:

. . . it is apparent that he does a proper 3-turn into the jump but he actually hops and turns to ends up on the outside edge. Is this a common defect?

Well the outside edge on the flip is pretty common, and it is more common than I realized before the IJS went into effect. I haven't seen many skaters do that hop on the 3 turn though.
