The Adam Rippon Good News Thread

:watch: The new LP is working and I love it. Great job on the quad attempt :rockstar: its a beautiful program.

It needs more MIF like a bird would do, birds love to do moves in the field and they do them all the time. All on one foot too because they have wings in case they fall over, birds just love transitions Adam. (I'll probably get flipped the bird for the suggestion somewhere, but whatever - fly on).

The music screams spirals.

That broken wing thing almost looked like a cat arm. :P Why didn't he rest it across the torso instead?

A (deep) thought for Adam worth pondering.. :COP:

:glamor: How in the hell you gonna have such a beautiful program about birds, and you don't have any spread eagle's. or Ina Bauer's with an arch back (bird.), or a spiral with extended freeleg (bird.) like a broken wing flying again? It doesn't have to look like Jason, but this is a case where Benji just Doesnt. Know. About. Them. He does not, but you do. It's beautiful for Skate America. (y) Flip the bird all you'd like (fly on)

I'm really impressed with Adam's choices, especially the LP (it'll work extremely well on him IMO). Original for skating and offers lots to work with. Well done. :40beers:

(ETA.. The background does sound slightly like the opening of Jason's LP music ;) but I'm not mad at it.)

I am too. I love the idea of the bird in the long but I love how comfortable he is in the short. It suits him and for me it is such a celebration of his personality and full of life. There is a lot of pride there and I salute that. These are my favorite Adam programs by a long shot. And I don't what he has done but he definitely looks older in a very good way. I've always been a Jason fan and remain so but now I'm torn about the Nationals podium. And that feels good. I feel like this could be a special year in the singles discipline for all of us worldwide. And dance too....I'm not sure about pairs yet. I want the Russians to get back on track.

Not sure if this British Eurosport version will retain its audio - Adam's Trophee de France free skate that won him the bronze medal earlier today (one day after his 27th birthday): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQiDVE7Ucuk

ETA excerpt from the Men's FS recap article by Jean-Christophe Berlot on IN:
Rippon's program to "The Arrival of the Birds" and "O" was a pure delight. The American perfectly executed all his jumps, including his quad toe -- a first for him. Skating first in the last group, he landed two triple axels and six triples in total, and three of his elements were rated Level 4.

"I just wanted to skate smooth and beautiful," a relieved Rippon said. "I'm so proud of what I've done. These last years have been so much hard work. Here, I felt mature, ready, prepared. I just felt like practice.

"I'm so glad that everybody saw my quad finally. It just took 27 years!" he continued. "But I can tell you, age is just a number. This is really a big step forward for me, and a huge monkey off my back. No one can say that I've never landed a quad!"

Rippon flew over the ice, moving his arms as if they were wings, flexing his torso like no other man does, playing with his hands and head. Not only did he skate a perfect program -- he also delivered a masterpiece on its own.

"More important to me is the storyline. At home, I focus on those technical elements, all the jumps and spins, which I let go (of) when I am here," Rippon said. "Here, I can really think of my story."

That fact was reflected in Rippon's program components, which were the second highest of the field. His interpretation, for which he received a mark of 9.11, especially stood out.

That was just incredible. I feel whether Adam or Jason get to go to Worlds will depend on who lands the quad.

He may not have the hips for it. I can't remember if he's done any extended spread eagles or Ina Bauers. Jeremy Abbott never did 'em because his hips just weren't open enough. Could be the same for Adam, maybe.

SO proud of him and love the bird LP.

Thanks for posting this. As much as I like US team there was still too much "chatting" through this gorgeous program. I don't mind Johnny talking about the technical aspects, for example, but we also talked about the birthday, the sad anniversary date in France and a number of things we could hear before or after the performance instead of DURING the performance. Come on guys...when they are having a skate that will stand out please quiet down.

ITA. They have a tendency to talk to hear themselves talk. I would view either the Eurosport(love those guys!) version or that which Rockerskating has posted without any commentary.

I came across an old thread here titled "What should Adam Rippon do?" that was created after his lowest finish on the Grand Prix, 10th place at Skate Canada, in October 2014, and this post resonated:
If you have ever seen Adam train and practice, you know why this performance is so disappointing. He works so damn hard that you just want him to do well. ... So, what would I do? I would bring a hungry and eager attitude to practice every day , draw the best out of Rafael that he has to offer and work on my concentration. I would also work on what makes me confident and ready to compete and give it my best. I would set a goal of consistently competing with a landed axel and all triples. I would train a consistent quad toe and be happy with what i present to the judges and crowd. I would also make it my business to retire proud of what I accomplished and look forward to my career as a coach and choreographer.
The latest good news for Adam is that, in his 9th season on the Grand Prix (18 events total), he has qualified for his first Final with 2 bronze medals in the same GP season. He has shown resilience in overcoming the low points in his career, and I'm glad he is able to enjoy and appreciate these high points as well.

Adam Rippon will skate in a holiday show in Allentown on Dec. 1

or most importantly, four miles from my house:D
And as I said, I need to figure out from the organizers if he is just spinning to some Christmas music, or actually performing a program.:cold: Because if it's the latter, I have no excuse, none, and the spousal unit may even come too:cheer2:
@el henry, did you end up going or not? Jeremy Abbott ended up filling in for Adam last night in Allentown and had a good time, as this fan cam clip seems to show (posted in his fan/uber thread) here: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/ind...abbott-uber-thread.81547/page-26#post-4942998

I just saw on his official website that Adam taped a phone interview with a local PA public radio station to promote his appearance with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra before he had to cancel. His interview was made available on November 28 here: http://www.wvia.org/radio/local/artscene/
Direct link to listen (the female interviewer has a very soothing voice that's great for radio): https://soundcloud.com/wvia-public-media/adam-rippon-champion-figure-skater-november-28-2016

@Sylvia , no I did not go to the show. As a newcomer to this era of skating and Christmas shows, I contacted the local FS club to see what Adam would be skating. They said the rink would only be one third regulation size, so no competitive or exhibition programs, and as much as I like Adam, I did not want to sit through high school choruses singing carols to see him twirl to to some carols himself. And as it turns out, Adam now has to prepare for GPF (yay Adam:cheer2:sad for Jason:wuzrobbed) so it was Jeremy.

The radio program was also interesting (the interviewer does have a lovely voice, classical music announcers often do) in that it was the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton NPR station, the area where Adam is from. Here in the Lehigh Valley we're about 70 miles away. I don't know how many spectators they would have attracted.

Adam's LP is a masterpiece, loved it. My favorite men's program this season! Happy Belated Birthday to Adam!

It really is, so that's why it was somewhat disappointing even after the kind of freeskate Adam gave at Trophee de France for David Pelletier to still feel the need to say "I don't like it" on the CBC broadcast.

We know David P. really dislikes certain program choices/styles, but that wasn't the right place/time to express one's dislikes, IMO.

I was thinking that Adam should try an SP jump layout of 4T, 3A, 3Z+3T. He skates across the rink for execute the opening 3F+3T, so there would be room to slot it in there. In fact, he puts FW into the 3F+3T as it is. I'd like him to add tech content to get a higher base value, so he can challenge those above him.

Adam isn't planning any changes to his programs for the Final, according to IN's preview article: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2016/12/06/210443320

Ice Talk podcast Ep. 9: Adam Rippon/Johnny Weir
U.S. champion Adam Rippon talks to host Nick McCarvel about his last-minute decision to change his free skate this season and why he's skating better than ever despite his relatively advanced age in the sport. McCarvel is also joined by NBC skating analyst (and fellow podcast host) Johnny Weir, who shares his thoughts on the field for this week's Grand Prix Final.

Rippon is up first (~30 mins.): http://web.icenetwork.com/fans/icetalk

He told McCarvel that he didn't know he had made the GP Final until he woke up in the morning and saw tweets from fans and then he still didn't believe it. He also recounts the aftermath of his 8th place finish at 2014 Nationals and how he picked himself up afterwards.

ETA: He drew #5 of 6 for the SP on Thursday.

His short program is really growing on me. Love the long program, it's exquisite. But I really am enjoying the hell out of his short now too. It's a great piece of performance that does a fantastic job of creating the atmosphere he's set on portraying. I feel like I'm transported back in time a bit to a NYC gay mega nightclub circa 2001 and it's around 2:00 A.M. in the morning and the real world outside doesn't exist. It's a great piece of choreographic art imo because it captures those sorts of places/nights so well. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it succeeds in what it sets out to do very well imo.

Ripppon's jump takeoff technique will forever bother me, but it's really nice when a skater puts out 2 programs out there that they can truly call their own. It really does make all the difference. His LP is my favorite of the season so I really hope to see him compete and skate well in Helsinki.

Jean-Christophe Berlot interviewed Adam in Marseille: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2016/12/08/210651412/rippon-my-job-is-to-get-the-audience-to-its-feet
A few years after skating to the soundtrack of Jonathan Livingston Seagull [2009-10 SP choreo. by David Wilson], Adam Rippon is back with another bird-themed program. When he skates it, his body lines and extensions, as well as his pure glide, make him fly over the ice. This season, he qualified for the Grand Prix Final for the first time of his career. On the eve of the men's short program in Marseille, Rippon talked to icenetwork about the way he balances artistry and athleticism in his programs.

Scott Hamilton Show: Ep. 7 12/08/16 | 00:24:40
Episode 7 of "The Scott Hamilton Show" features an interview with U.S. champion Adam Rippon. http://web.icenetwork.com/video/v1215313683

Good news - Adam was announced on Feb. 6 as returning to the Stars on Ice cast (first of 7 shows is on April 13 in Fort Myers, FL): https://www.facebook.com/starsonice/posts/10154190094930936
(From his SOI profile: "During an off-ice warmup on January 6, 2017, Rippon sprained his left ankle and fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot, resulting in his withdrawal from the 2017 U.S. Championships.")

It looks like he has begun his rehab. at the Olympic Training Center in CO: https://twitter.com/Adaripp/status/829845585557614592

Thinking of AdaRipp!!! Hang in there! You are missed, but your presence is felt all around because of the impact you have made on your peers! :encore:

It will forever be a disgrace that a rousing, clean and wonderful performance like this in his home country did not receive sufficient marks for him to place at least 5th over an uninspired error-ridden program by a veteran, and in view of another uninspired imperfect performance by a pesty quad-endowed newbie to seniors

Too bad Adam didn't enlist Rafael immediately after this performance -- Adam may have strengthened and improved his technique straightaway, instead of losing his confidence and his 3-axel in subsequent seasons; but whatever doesn't kill makes us stronger!!!
