Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

It may be hard for skaters who are competing in the Team Event.
Meaning, they'll be too busy to participate? I did read somewhere that some first competitive events do start Thursday, Feb.8th. But Opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Feb.9th. As to that, I had always assumed that all athletes will be assembled together that day. Team Event (Skating) Feb.11th (SD) &12th (FD). Later, Ice Dance: (for medals in individual discipline) Feb.19th (SD) and 20th (FD)

According to Canada's official Olympics 2018 website
https://olympic.ca/pyeongchang-2018-competition-schedule/

They have website but I don't think it's updated yet ...

Is there any chance Tessa and/or Scott carry Canadian flag at the opening Ceremony?

In terms of their status as well known, expected to win a medal athletes, yes, they fit the bill. But as was mentioned, this would be tough with the team event so close to the opening. I’m also not sure there’s even been two people carry the flag in the opening? It happens often in the closing ceremony that a duo will carry the flag, but can’t think of a time when two people carried in the opening ceremony. It will be interesting to see who they select to carry the flag.

Has any of these two said anything about coaching ? Just imagine if they do what Fabian Bourzat did : work in the school you were trained at, right after the end of your career. Can you imagine Scott working along Patrice and Romain, or Tessa doing choreography with Marie-France ?
Or maybe they have other plans ?

It's quite common for athletes who are competing in the days shortly following the Opening Ceremony to skip it and rest their bodies instead.
The Opening Ceremony is a long event and usually the athletes have to walk a couple miles to the venue and spend hours on their feet. Tessa and Scott skipped it in Sochi for that reason.

I wish for Tessa and Scott to be able to attend the Opening Ceremony. Didn't they say in Sochi that they were sad to have missed it? It will be their last Games, so I hope that they can experience everything they want to.

Here are Nazarova and Nikitin talking about Tessa and Scott (unfortunately it's only a google translation):
-You have not changed your liking in ice dance?

Maxim: Here we have not changed. We do not cease to admire the rides of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and this will probably remain with us forever. In our joint opinion with Sasha, the Canadian duo is the best in the history of ice dance. I am not sure that such masters will appear in the near future. What they are demonstrating is the art of the highest level.

- In your opinion, what is their secret?

Alexandra: Work, work and work again. Plus, so to speak, God’s gift. But there is hardly a recipe here.

-What do you think, how much time should a program “live”? One season, two?

Alexandra: I believe that there is no more than one season, otherwise it’s possible to stay in development. That is, if you want to grow, you have to constantly try something new and avoid long “stops”, long riding with one program. I would regard it as a step backwards.

Max: I’ll say more. Not only does the program have to “live” one season - an update needs every element. It is precisely this that we aspire to. We rarely repeat our elements, well, unless, at all, nothing comes to mind. It happens. But our goal is different. Every season - absolutely new elements that we have never performed, every season - a new image that we have not yet shown to the viewer. Why are Tessa and Scott the best on the ice? They have new programs every season. And such that no element, no movement can not be forgotten.

I love to see what an impact V/M have on the sport and young skaters.

And to finish off my post with a nice little video of my favorite skaters, here they are: https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/playback/canadians-confident-of-regaining-crown-in-pyeongchang/

I totally love N & N and think they have been undermarked this season.

Can't wait to see their performances at the Canadian National Championships. I hope the judges really appreciate their wonderful skating as I feel like they often don't mark them with the same enthusiasm that they do with the other 3 disciplines. I am not sure why.

I finally realized that I cannot live with the idea of never seeing Tessa and Scott compete live again... and so I bit the bullet and very hastily arranged a trip to Vancouver for Canadians. This will be the second time I have flown across the country specifically for them - the last time I was in Vancouver was to see them win the gold at the 2010 Olympics. (And the only time I visited Vancouver aside from those two times was for 2001 Worlds, drawn there mostly by B&K. Oh, what I will do for these crazy ice dancers!)

Woot! Yayyyyy!

So happy for you but also slightly jealous. As a European I won't be able to see them live in a competition. Enjoy it and cheer them on for me as well!! :)

Happy New Years dear VM fans! It’s been a great year and how lucky we are that Tessa and Scott came back to give us two more years. Now we’re down to two more competitions, I wish them the best for the rest of their competitive career. It’s been an honor to be their fan all these years. It’s because of them I’m a figure skating fan when I randomly caught them during their FD at the Vancouver Olympics 8 years and what a great ride it’s been. I love them (and the amazing people I’ve met being their fans). I hope they’re proud of themselves at the end of this because I sure am!

Oh and if you’re in Canada and like Cheerios go get a box with them on it https://68.media.tumblr.com/90a4ed8c349eee632ba40697c2ade031/tumblr_p1qp5rsA9j1r6wv1uo1_1280.jpg

Hmmmm, I wonder if they are also on the cover of the gluten free version of Cheerios.

Woah, music edit for 2nd part ? I did not see that one coming ! I'm guessing Tango de Roxanne is staying obviously it has gotten the better feedback. If the ending is even more "theatrical", it might means that after the last lift, the music isn't "fading" or softer anymore but the opposite : building even more ?
However, big changes to SD too ? Except the costume, I don't think there is anything to change at all  (but it might be just for FD)

Yes I think the new cut will have the music building and not fading. About the SD I'm confused too...maybe they changed little things in the SD and the big changes concern just the FD (I hope). I would be happy with something less animalistic for the costumes.

Thanks for the write-up. It was an interesting read.

I'm really impressed that they really choreographed their exhibition program on the spot at the gala practice. They did a very good job, I really like. However, now I would really like to know what they had originally planned to do for galas.

As far as the other changes go, I'm looking forward to seeing the new version of both programs. I like the ending of the FD how it is but a lot of people seem to miss the drama at the end. If this change gets them the gold, I'm all for it. As long as they keep the beginning with Tessa jumping onto Scott, I'm happy. That's my favorite part of both programs this year. This blind trust that Scott will be there and catch Tessa and her just jumping backwards is so impressive to me. Maybe it's because I always suck at these "trust your colleague and just jump / let yourself fall" exercises. However, if Scott were my colleague I would do it of course. :D

Edit: As an addition, here is Beverley Smith's article on the interview with Tessa and Scott https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2018/01/05/virtue-and-moir-reborn-after-the-grand-prix-final/

I hope when Scott says they have a lot of new elements he doesn't mean actual technical elements. Changing up the FD step sequences so often has made it difficult for them to execute them at their best. They really don't need to change them again. Or to come up with new lifts so late in the game.

It sounds like they're going to be simplifying their programs. Considering the programs they're competing against, it's probably the right call. But I still find it sad to see the way ice dance is going.

Anyways, with so many changes I'm not expecting great performances at Nationals. That's the risk, politically. Hopefully it works out for them in the end.

a lot of new elements
that part scared me too. But maybe he was talking about the choreo elements, considering they didn't maximize on goes with the ones they have and that they've been reworking the end where the ChLi is. Changing the lifts would be crazy: they almost always got 6.30 for the RoLi in the SD and the CuLi in the FD. So I think those two are staying. The StaLi is staying for sure, it got great response. Not sure about the RoLi...but even if I have an unpopular opinion I hope they keep it. They're for sure reworking the CiSt considering the lines about opening up the programs and not feeling constricted by the moviments, that was the most stuffed part I could think about. I don't really know what to think about the SD...I didn't really see a part where they could feel constricted...

agree.

We can’t worry about oversimplifying while also worrying about new scary technical elements.... We’ll just drive ourselves crazy. All this interview proves to me is that Virtue and Moir live up to their word when they say that part of their success comes from being willing to do things that others are not. They don’t stay in neutral. They learn from their setbacks, grow, and come out blazing even better than before.

Their new ending for the FD at Grand Prix was a big improvement, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they have in store for Nationals.
