Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

I never realized that with G/P nobody wants injuries.

Thanks for posting the videos!
Any time Poirier is in need of practice time on the ice, he should be given some ice ... in a different place and a different time so that he and his partner are the only one practicing.

Thank you!!!

Okay, so first time I watched, I was very upset to see the changes and found the new version of Come What May somewhat jarring.

Second viewing, I felt much better, lol. The new lift at the end is stunning. The skating is always exemplary so that is never a concern for me. My biggest concern right now, is that they will have no international competitive feedback until they skate at the OG. They have done what they felt they had to do and I trust them.

Still love the program. God, their performance and execution are the best I have ever ever seen. Even in just the practice.

Post Script: I just watched it again and ya, the changes are actually awesome. I think I was just in shock. Hahaha. Phew. Panicked there for a minute.

Ok I just watched and I need to rewatch it. But I think I prefer it to version #1. It’s definitely more grand and more Olympic that’s for sure. I really appreciate how they just go for it even in practice. Can’t wait to see it in competition.

@kittysk8ts there’s really nothing to apologize for it’s not a big deal IMO.

ETA: Ok on second rewatch I think this was the right decision. The ending pose though, must Tessa die? Can't they do something else like hug or something.

I am so glad I made the trip across the border to watch them live. I missed the morning practice but made it to the afternoon practice where they practiced the free dance. It was a strange sensation to see people I've only seen on TV previously in the flesh (passed by Scott's aunt and Tessa's mother on way to our seats; sat a few rows back from where Marie-France and Patrice were at the boards).

It was great to see the interactions between V/M & their coaches at the board. It's very clear their coaches are very supportive and invested, pointing out specific body movements they want to see.

With respect to the changes, it was a lot to take in watching live. I haven't had to chance to watch the links posted here yet so what I'm about to post is the feeling I got immediately after watching it at the rink (so it may not reflect all the changes that were actually made). First, the music edits as a whole seem less jarring as there seems to be a similar proportion of vocals throughout the program and there seems to be a beginning, middle and end (compared to previous edit). Second, the change in music for the ending is easier to anticipate (i.e., you know it's about to end and be ready to clap). Third, I really appreciated some of the choreographic movements that were placed where the music transitions occur. I do miss the choreo that prelude her death in the original version but understand why they had to remove it because it wouldn't work with the new music edit and with the increased flow they are trying to achieve (this is part of the ice dance trend that I don't appreciate - there is more to ice dance than pure flow).

When I have more time, perhaps I'll post more.

Thank you for your impressions. I’m glad you guys get to see them one last time (unless anyone is making the trip to Korea). I went to Ottawa in 2014 because I really thought that was it, but I couldn’t make it this time.

The new choreographic lift is stunning and really works. Did you guys notice they were singing to each other.

I too wish they had a chance to perform this before an international panel before the OG, but I don't think it's feasible given the timing of 4CC.

I really really hate the changes they've made... Part of it is the terrible music but now the whole second half is generic romantic shmaltz of the worst kind. There's nothing special about the way they're moving, it doesn't match the music, it's really empty and it all feels very forced and "trying hard to be crowd-pleasing" instead of "trying to be true to themselves and what they want to express". They cut out the best part of the original program, the ending, where they had a real artistic vision, to make way for whatever that was. Why?

It's been apparent since the beginning of the season that they've wanted to do the opposite of what they did in 2014. But I think they've clearly overcompensated. Last time around they didn't make the changes that they should have made. This time they changed way too much. Even if the changes were actually positive, how are they going to make 1/2 a new FD polished enough in 2 months of practise to be competitive at the Olympics? You could see in the video they were really thinking through every move and not really performing like they usually do at this time of year. And this is practise, one month away...

I'm sorry, I know I'm being a downer. I wish V/M all the best and I hope many fans will genuinely enjoy their last FD. And I hope it'll be worth it and that the judges will like it too.

Wow that lift is amazing. I really like the changes!

I remember watching them in 2010 winning the Olympic gold on tv live and I was so happy .. then later on kinda sad because that meant retirement right? I am so happy that they countinued on - and I think this is their best program ever which says a lot.

Finally, more Nicole! I always thought it was odd how little of her character’s voice was heard singing in the FD.

The program is definitely more coherent. I do kind of miss the tragic ending. I’m a sucker for a program that makes me cry.

They look SHARP.

Me too.
I think the vocals help sell the story more.
I miss the falling ending but I also love the choreographic lift, stunning.

I think this is an OGM battle of ethereal vs drama.

Bummed their backs are to me for the leap stationary lift. But there right close for the Carmen lift.

I still think the French will take it but certainly hope I'm wrong.

Can't wait until tomorrow

The ending pose though, must Tessa die? Can't they do something else like hug or something.

Agreed. It just feels like they had investment in that pose that no longer fits the rest of the ending. Enough of the dying, just embrace each other with love...

As much as I loved the original version of the FD, I think that the changes they've made are fantastic as they've effectively addressed the concerns about the end of the program. There are absolutely no compromises, every movement and edge is executed and performed to perfection and fits with the program.
Contrary to those who've expressed doom about modifications to their programs and the timing factor, I think that they are performing the new choreography spectacularly, and all things being equal they should be rewarded for it.

But she does die at the end. The vocals of the last part sent a chill through my bones ... just so beautiful.

I love the music personally.

In the movie, she dies. Does she have to die in the program? In their revised more upbeat ending, it doesn't make sense to me (it did in the two previous versions where we saw her dying). Obviously mileage varies.

I don't know yet which version I prefer, I have to wait until I have seen the final competition version.

Until that: I just LOVE Scott. He is so hilarious (but please don't fall during the competition!!!)

That was a great display of how easy it is to mess up one of those miserable rhumba choctaws!

Wow! I was a nervous mess during their whole skate (especially after Andrew's fall) but I'm even happier now. They are simply the best! However, now I have to wait for a video of the sd to come up to watch it again without being super nervous ;).
