Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

Think of all that Olympic experience they have, especially skating last like they did in 2010. They are prepared, and they know how to bring it. Korea LOVES their Moulin Rouge as evident by the TE, so I have a glimmer of hope that they can actually WIN this!!

V/M are in a world of their own. There is no reason whatsoever why P/C have higher PCS. With V/M, the depth and precision of their edges, the flow and speed out of elements, the incredible transitions, the closeness and weaving in and out of each other in hold, the balance of work between them, the exceptional musicality, all the detail from the tip of their heads to their toes, the complexity of choreography, the way they move as one with their whole bodies, the energy and attack....it's beyond ridiculously awesome. No other team, including P/C, can match this. Seeing V/M and P/C back to back it is clear to even the casual viewer. I really hope the ISU steps in before tomorrow to make sure the tech panel and judges understand that any whiff of cheating or medal fixing will more than likely result in such a backlash that the sport could be removed from the Olympics. The tech panel and judges need to do their jobs according to the rules, based on what was skated on the ice. If P/C were any other team, they would have scored much lower than they did tonight. It's not right.

I feel a little bad for Weaver/Poje. Once again low-balled. They should be ahead of the Russians, and about tied with the Italians.

If we assume V/M and P/C take 1st and 2nd place, any team in 3rd to 8th could still capture bronze. May the judges and tech panel please do their jobs properly tomorrow!

you know what's gonna happen? and i really hope this won't happen but the judges will score p/c more than 2 points ahead of v/m on their PCS, even if v/m skates clean

Yes of course, but I was just pointing out that of all things that I thought would happen a costume malfunction for P/C was something I did not see coming. The ice is definitely slippery. This just goes to show to that we really just need to see what happens tomorrow; if both teams skate clean and V/M lose by 1.5 points, then I hope we aren't the only ones to pick up on this because that is something that should not happen. All this said, I am sending all my positive thoughts for a clean FD skate of MR tomorrow.

The thing is, at least IMO, that because of the judges their points are worth even more than the simple numbers. They have to fight hard for every single one of them. There are no handouts and that makes the score even more impressive.

The first interview is up https://vimeo.com/256361738

Well, the judges had them 0.24 points ahead, the rest was because of levels. I really hate that they needed a wardrobe malfunction from Gabby to have a shot at winning but if P/C had actually had a strong skate...

Omg it wasn't because of the wardrobe malfunction that they are ahead..gmab

but noooo, no deduction taken since it's, hey, P/C! the judges can't do that to them, heaven forbid!
Just checked the rulebook, and what I saw for costume deductions was:
  • Costume and prop Rule 501, paragraph 1 - 1.0 per program
  • Part of the costume/decoration falls on the ice Rule 501, paragraph 2 - 1.0 per program
The rule 501 specified in the 'costume and prop' rule states
At ISU Championships, the Olympic Winter Games and International Competitions, the clothing of the Competitors must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing may, however, reflect the character of the music chosen. The clothing must not give the effect of excessive nudity inappropriate for the discipline. Men must wear full length trousers and must not wear tights. In addition, in Ice Dance, Ladies must wear a skirt. Accessories and props are not permitted. Clothing that does not adhere to these guidelines will be penalized by a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n).
So while Gabby was unfortunately exposed, it doesn't seem like a wardrobe malfunction of that sort is in violation of the rules. With two wardrobe malfunctions in ice dance so far at these Games (Koreans in the team event, Gabby here), I wonder if the rules will be adapted.

I know we like to be negative BUT if V&M can skate MR clean & full of emotion..skating last will be emotional too for them I am sure..there is NO way the French can take this from them. The judges cannot cheat & give the gold to P&C if V&M skate clean..it would look so obvious imo..

I am so glad I watched them live. I tried my best to enjoy their SD in real time and not look at the score box, but it was very hard since I'm so familiar with the TES they got from Skate Canada (where they got level 4 for all elements) and can see whether they got level 4 for each of their element in real time as the cummulative score changed throughout the SD. When the skate was done, I did 2 fist pumps and then kept looking at my screen trying to will the yellow box to turn green and for the TES to remain the same, reflecting all L4s.

Is it just my computer, or is it taking longer than normal for the PDF of the judges scores to be loading on the ISU site? I click it and it goes to a blank white screen.

P/C had an iffy twizzle that should have seen a GOE deduction at the least. The lift position was not solid, and the step sequences were tentative. There should have been a costume deduction. It was not a great skate. Any other team would have received much lower marks.

Just got the link to the judges scores. P/C got level 3 for their partial sequence, but SOMEHOW that twizzle was level 4 and got all +2 and +3. If they'd gotten even zeros (which I could handle, since they weren't horrible, just not worthy of increasing the mark), they'd be another 1.3 behind, which is about where I think they should be.

VM had all level 4, and almost all +3 across all elements (6 of the judges gave them +2 for their rhumba pattern - P/C had all +3, except for two judges who gave +2)

and ben agosto already has p/c winning gold tomorrow. so there you go! that's why i'm still disappointed at the gap not being wider between p/c and v/m, as i know the judges will just hand out high PCS scores for p/c tomorrow

What is he high? Lol IF both teams skate clean & V&M skate last...no way can the judges just take the gold from V&M..don't see that, Ben needs to calm down..

i appreciate your confidence, but i'd rather be realistic--though i'd love to be pleasantly surprised tomorrow if v/m does pull off a magnificent and clean skate, and actually win gold!

Oh I am never confident just trying to stay calm & think it through, I mean if V&M come out last & skate a clean emotional program with how the audience reacts, I cannot see them being overtaken...maybe I am naive..

What did he say?

Do you really believe that would happen? P/C have an appealing FD that they usually skate well, and the audience will mostly have forgotten about the SD. As long as they don't fall or have a really obvious mistake, they can easily win overall without too much backlash.

As a V/M fan, it's so frustrating to see them grossly underscored (vs their rivals) in two consecutive Olympic SDs. Skate Canada is either seriously incompetent at politics or they aren't even trying. "Let the skating speak for itself" is not a viable strategy in ice dance.

I'm waiting the panel draw to be too pessimistic. And it's not out of discussion for them to win on levels tomorrow. The judges are against them it's clear though.

So, maybe a stupid question, but Sharon Rogers, the French and Russian judge were on the panel for the SD. Does this mean they are out for the FD or can they be drawn again?

they can be drawn again. 4 of today's judges are gonna be replaced, let's hope it's not the canadian and the japanese.
I still can't get over USFS baking FR and not CAN

Re-posting:
There's a media advisory that covers all of this.
https://www.pyeongchang2018.com/en/...e-skating/media-information-report-n1314-.htm

"For the second segment of the event, the four judges not drawn for the first segment will automatically be assigned to be in the panel of nine judges for the second segment and all other judges serving already in the first segment will participate in the draw to complete the panel of nine judges for the second segment. Out of the nine judges drawn for each segment, the highest and lowest scores are deleted and the average will be taken from the remainder (trimmed mean)."
CHN ESP POL SVK will replace 4 of the judges for the FD panel.

In more entertaining news, "The Beaverton" (a Canadian satire news publication and TV series, for those not familiar) has chimed in, claiming "Grandmother watching Olympic figure skating thinks Virtue and Moir should just f*ck already"

Replace the * near the end with the letter 'u' after you click (FSU won't let curse words be posted in links so it won't work)
