Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir, #46 : Until the End of Time

IMO their amazing skating (I am showing my bias but I do think V&M are among the best ice dancers, ever) are overshadowed by their cheap and tacky programs this season. :( They are so much better than their material and it's disappointing to me as a fan. I assume many changes will be made by the time Skate Canada rolls around.
Tessa and Scott need a lot of work to do, but "cheap programs"? Where did you find this? Just because girl could dance Latin? Give me a break, please.

You need to read messages under VM videos from YouTube. One woman from France is so funny, when she wright about Scott.

We've heard the expression how clothes make the man, right? What would you like new Scott's outfit for FD to be? I'm partial to him wearing a slightly unbuttoned (light grey hue) shirt with folded sleeves & maybe sleeveless vest too (like the relaxed version of Ewan in MR). Kind of like what he wore in Umbrellas. But of course, not the colour brown. I went with light grey because if Tessa goes with red, it's less striking when they go together than if it's off white or something.

*Correction: rolled up sleeves

I want vest for Scott in the FD. And haircut. But in black will be OK.

For SD not so much sparkling shirt.

I'm not a VM uber but I respect their skill and longevity. I especially love Tessa. My only hope is that judges mark the dances fairly and objectively (for example, I'm lovin Coomes and Buckland SD this year - hope judges reward them). If I may offer some constructive criticism, Scott's overall look this very important year, unfortunately, is not appealing, sorry. I think he bulked up (but not in a good way) and he needs a hair cut or if he wants it long, a better style. He looks greasy and stout - sorry. His body movements represent a nice try - but again, sorry - it's not convincing; appears he's trying too hard. Let's face it, Tessa carries this team - it's obvious. Unfortunately, however, competition will be fierce this year and one person's effort may not be enough. In any case, Tessa needs to ditch all the SD heavy makeup and extraneous upper body movements. She's a true beauty when she is the most natural. Good luck to them. And a shout out to all the VM fans who are the best I've read in years - good luck to you also! Barring any mishaps, I see at least Olympic silver or gold for VM this year. I'm loving the FD, by the way; not sure if it will beat PC overall but I especially love the last minute of the program. Tessa totally brings it with the dramatic, swooping falls into Scott's arms (twice) -really brilliant.

Maybe I just skimmed these threads in the past, but I never realized how much people talked about, criticized, and sometimes ripped apart figure skaters' appearances. I understand aesthetics and liking certain dresses or styles, but this really should have no consideration when it comes to scores in sport. People are obviously free to post what they want, and maybe I'm the only one who gets uncomfortable when I read some of it that goes beyond clothing preferences....

 People do realize there is a search function on this board right? And other boards where they use the same username ;)

To me Scott is still the best male ice dancer, the skating skills, the body movement, the musicality, the acting range. He is the LEADING MAN and he's cute with long or short hair. And Tessa is his perfect match! Enough said.
YAAASS!!!!!! And as for the comments that he is over-performing during the SD, he is doing Mick Jagger, and quite well in my opinion. He "Moves Like Jagger" as sung by Adam Levine. I am so freaking happy with both programs.

Tessa and Scott in SD - is die for. This idea is so interesting, they had so many moves from ballroom, there body moves ..... Nobody could he close to this :) I even didn't pay attention to costumes, when they start first move of this dance.
And for the first outing they showed so much speed and power ;)

Coming out of lurk mode to say that I think both of Tessa and Scott programs are fabulous already. Never felt that way in the run up to the 2014 games but did for 2010. They look so happy when they are on the ice this year and no matter what the results end up being I am thrilled to be able to see them compete again.

As for the artsy fartsy brigade, I guess they are worried about their team not winning again. Can't say anything about the skating so they resort to insults and name calling. Says more about them than about Tessa and Scott who are not and never will be trashy.

tabby cat - I agree with almost everything you said, and I absolutly agree that calling Tessa and Scott's programs tacky and vulgar and even mentioning prostitutes is simply absurd, but "artsy fartsy brigade" is name calling too. Please, let's not resort to the level of those whom we are reproaching (or whatever is the word).

lauravvv it is funny that of everything posted lately you take offence to artsy fartsy. Perhaps you should try lecturing P/C ubers about the nasty things they are posting instead. See rustyskates post above to start.

I personally do not like costumes from SD and the whole concept of this program in simple style "let's go party". Maybe I expected from them more tender, sophisticated and sensual Latino based on original music and dance, more in Brazilian, Cuban or Cape Verde vibe. But in MR Tessa does not look like a prostitute and she is not vulgar, however "Roxanne" is a song about a prostitute, isn’t it. So maybe this remark was rather about that and Satine character.

Hmmm everyone has an opinion on how they interpret V/M's SD. For me, I don't get the sense that this is a "let's go party" vibe, rather "let's try to go Latin ballroom style since we (v/m) haven't done that style under Zueva" vibe. Really if you look at the movements choreographed for this SD, it literally screams Latin BALLROOM. From the samba rolls, the 2 sec paused pose, hip shake or even the costume pick (though some think it's OTT and believe me, I've seen even more skin or sensual borderline foreplay movements, if it were a real Latin ballroom competition).

Most importantly for most of us watching, they NAILED it!

Even so they are still very, very restraint in their (accused overly sensual) movements. Go watch a real floor competition and you'll understand what I mean.

It may be that some prefer to stick with traditional Latin music to dance the Latin or tend to think that if one dance Latin use Latin, right? That's absolutely fine. But I've watched via YouTube right now Latin style competitions are using non traditional music to dance to. Again, go see for yourself.

However having said this, the point is this season skaters can choose whatever music they'd like to skate to as long as its the correct rhythm. Correct me if I'm wrong, ok?

And no, I won't be obtuse here. When someone previously commented here or elsewhere about vulgarity or prostitute, it wasn't even close to referring to Tessa's portrayal of MR's Santine's character. (Note, yes I'm aware that Roxanne & Santine's is about that. Yet Tessa chose sophistication over vulgarity)

But back to my point, those comments was targeted specifically at v/m's SD (i.e. choreography and/or costumes) because they (v/m) chose NOT to skate the style they were (supposedly) supposed to (according to some), unlike other skaters.

That's exactly's lauravvv's point. Not to fall into the trap of name calling just because you think others are doing it. As a V/M fan, I'm sure lauravvv is more mindful of what people are doing in the name of defending V/M and how it paints the fandom.

lol... just for the record, Satine is simply a variation of an archetypical character which is the "kind-hearted courtesan". the most famous one is Marguerite Gautier aka La dame aux camélias. it has become a great symbol of love and sacrifice in the face of moralistic middle-class prejudices. Satine is nothing new then, she's a noble heroine who gives everything for love. I think that, in 2017, we can cut it out with certain rethorics.

This eye-opening style of arguments is unnecessary, I'm a professional dancer, (not ballroom dancer), but I know perfectly this technique and whole specific aesthetics. I'm aware about dance styles, dance techniques and cultural references associated with dance origins. "Let's go party" - it's a "short cuts" expression and frankly I was referring to Scott's own words, when he was talking about their "unorthodox" music choices, that SD will be like a big or great party. As for interpretation of Latin dance, it's very clear that Tessa and Scott are trying to capture strictly ballroom dancing style, the certain articulation of movement and the body expression. Yes, they have right to arrange their program in style they like, they can choose "Sympathy for the devil" instead of "Besame mucho" because The Rolling Stones song has required samba rhythm, (however song and music is not only about rhythm). But when I watch the program as a complete composition of choreography, music, particular style of dancing and costumes, it's natural that i will have my own personal judgment based on my sense of esthetics and cultural experience.

Where did you found rumba rhythm in "Sympathy for the devil" ?
(however song and music is not only about rhythm)
Really? So dancers don't need to move on rhythm, but on melodie, words what else?
It's not about ice dance. You could read in ice dance rulebook they need to move on rhythm and this is most important part of ice dance.

Problem is Satine is no Carmen, and so far, she's playing it Carmen like in the Tango part.
That is why there is a problem in the choreography connecting the two parts and they have lot of time to correct that.
