Software/program to convert video files

I need a program or software to convert video files to mpg-2 I watch my files on a portable DVD player or my PC, not on any kind of cell phone or mobile device. I had been using freemake, but my security software has tagged freemake as riddled with adware and junk it can't remove, so I'm wary of any free converter programs now.

What are some good choices for converting files? I think I prefer buying a program at a reasonable price, I don't want my computer infected with junk or any kind of adware again. Thanks for all suggestions and advice.

I've been using VLC as a video player for years, but I only recently discovered that it also has a convert feature.

VLC is one of the best freewares around, IMO. No adware or add-on junk, works with virtually any video (or audio) format type, and it's very intuitive and straightforward to use.

I do have VLC and I like it very much as a player, but I've been unsuccessful in converting video files to mpeg-2 which is the only format my portable players recognize.
Since nationals is here I want a program to convert videos I find on line so I can watch later on a bigger screen. I'm not tech savvy I need something really simple and safe.

They were giving away free copies of WinX Video Converter Pro toward the end of December. I wished I would have known sooner so you could have gotten the pro software.

I did notice at the site that there is Winx Video Converter free. At least that what it says - 100% free and clean. The copy I have works really well and it can convert any type of video file.
