Skating men in tights....

After posting in the M/D thread I started to wonder when the "no tights on male figure skaters"-rule was instated? Artur Dmitriev wore tights both for Don Quixote and for Rach at Lillehammer 1994, and I had no objections:smokin: Do the ISU wants to stop male skaters from looking to much like ballet dancers, as it's a sport? I feel the rule is kind of crap now that woman are allowed to wear pants, and so also tights, but men aren't? Sexist, much? I can't really see it becoming a big problem either, as I can't imagine a collected bunch of the skating men running out buying tights for their new programs. Some will, but the majority won't. So, what's the deal? We are being robbed!

I don't know about this rule (I'm not that much into rules and reglements).
What's the problem with men in tights ?

Oh, I see no problem with that what so ever:smokin:
Maybe there isn't a specific thighs rule, just "inappropriate comstumes" like Fadeev? But our commentators have several times spoken about the fact that men aren't allowed to wear tights. @Sylvia ? You're our guru.

Surely this thread deserves a link to the infamous Vanessa Riley comments? Strictly speaking not about tights, though fadeev's costume was tight

Tight and light! That was hilarious, haven't seen it before! Was Mira Leung deducted when her undies were showing. Fadeev was just :respec:in those pant:lol:

From the ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules for Singles & Pair Skating and Ice Dancing:

Rule 501

Clothing

1. At ISU Championships, the Olympic Winter Games and International Competitions, the clothing of the Competitors must be modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing may, however, reflect the character of the music chosen. The clothing must not give the effect of excessive nudity inappropriate for the discipline. Men must wear full length trousers and must not wear tights. In addition, in Ice Dance, Ladies must wear a skirt. Accessories and props are not permitted.

Clothing that does not adhere to these guidelines will be penalized by a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n).

For Ice Dance, exceptions to the restrictions may be announced by the IDTC if appropriate to the Rhythms selected for the Short Dance.

2. The decorations on costumes must be non-detachable. Part of the costume or decoration falling on the ice will be penalized by a deduction (see Rule 353, paragraph 1.n).

Hey, I don't make the rules -- I just know where to find them.

Thanks @gkelly But are these the latest set of rules? They say: Men must wear full length trousers and must not wear tights. In addition, in Ice Dance, Ladies must wear a skirt  No, not anymore. (but of course, no change for the men....)

Brian Boitano of course looking smashing
Max Aaron pushing dull rules, to our delight

These are the 2016 rules. They do state that there may be exceptions to the restrictions in the short dance depending on each year's rhythms.

I wonder what kind of SD rhythm would prompt them to allow tights for men that year. ;)

The rules, and when the tights restrictions for men were instituted, and how they appear to be enforced or relaxed is all very confusing. At the same time, I thought that last season the rules regarding men not being able to wear sleeveless tops was relaxed. AdaRipp told me at Skate America, that he was in compliance with a rule regarding sleeveless tops for men (despite one of the judges having taken a deduction for his sp costume). :D

LOL, the juxtaposition of these pics makes it look like Mariah is aghast at or in awe of AdaRipp

A judge seen in the background in this pic is definitely smiling at AdaRipp! :D ;)

AdaRipp in fairly tight trousers and gorgeous see-through top; this costume won awards and dropped jaws :D :COP:

Why don't TPTB concentrate more on eliminating antiquated competitive structure rules that are preventing the sport from growing? And just allow the skaters to use their own best judgement. FGS, too many contrary costume rules! :duh: :p

That rule allowed woman to wear pants for the "hip hop":p

Pairs and singles allow women to wear trousers and tights, but ice dance women still have to wear skirts. I don't get it either.

It makes no sense!

Adam is golden! Those photos and outfits are :respec:

I agree, it's just silly. Especially if no one can come up with a good explanation why those tights aren't allowed. Back to the dark ages.

You would think they would want to ban sequins, ruffles, feathers, baubles, and beads. :inavoid:

I remember the semi-serious fan push for everyone to wear an all black unitard, just to keep it fair.

It's amazing what is/isn't banned, no matter the rules. Isn't there also supposed to be a deduction for jewellery? Almost every skater wears bulky pendants around their necks, but never receive deductions.

Lol... from the moment I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of Artur Dmitriev. God, the guy looked GREAT in tights. Mishkutenok & Dmitriev had great programs but watching those where he is in tights? BIG plus for me. Brian Boitano also looked great in tights.

But would that even be fair though? Wouldn't some look more fab than others in such attire? Hmmm :COP:
Exactly! Unitards can be very unforgiving!

It started w/ the suggestion that costumes distract too much and hide or mask inferior, flawed skating. So, the recommendation was, if everyone were to be dressed in the same attire, the emphasis would be back on the skating itself and not be disguised by the window dressing.

It was quite a lively, but not necessarily enlightened discussion. And, of course, there was plenty of :argue: and :drama: to go around.

Good times! :watch:

IMO skaters should be allowed to wear whatever goes with the music. If they skate to for example ballet music, tights as worn by male ballet dancers should be allowed. I can understand if the ISU objects to too much nudity though and visible underwear is not OK.
