No disrespect to Smart/Diaz I am still hoping Sara/Kirill can go to Worlds somehow....![]()
I've been referring to this team as "Team Sarill" since they paired up, but I'm open to any other nicknames.Because they need one....feel free to come up with a better name
Yes - Hurtado/Diaz finished 13th in Sochi.Congrats H/K! I believe their placement puts Spain one spot up from Sochi, yes?
I think even if H/K went to Worlds, it would be difficult to place in the Top 10 without more teams announcing they won't compete. Although Virtue/Moir won't be there, the Danes and Stepanova/Bukin will be. Currently, there would be 3 Americans, 2 Canadians, 2 Italians, and 2 Russians almost certainly in front of them, and H/K only narrowly defeated the Danes at Europeans. Soucisse/Firus also scored very similarly to H/K at 4CC. So unless more teams drop out, the competition for that 10th place spot would be extremely tough. If Smart/Diaz are smart, they will give their spot to them. With Oly momentum H/K may get a second spot, S/D am not so sure (more a no imo)
Adding that I totally forgot about Coomes/Buckland in the above discussion. They, in addition to the rest, would almost certainly lock out H/K from the Top 10. So I think FEDH might as well stick to the plan and send Smart/Diaz, and try to snag a second spot in 2019 after there are more retirements and H/K have another year of experience and reputation-building under their belts. I also think that politically it would be more beneficial to end the season as 12th at the Olympics than go to Worlds, with a deeper field, and risk placing lower.I think even if H/K went to Worlds, it would be difficult to place in the Top 10 without more teams announcing they won't compete. I dont understand Sarah & Kiriil not going to Worlds. I know they lost at Nationals but under the overall system they use they outqualified Smart & Diaz for the Olympics. Last year when they beat them at Nationals, Smart & Diaz got to go to Worlds over them due to this system, so why not the reverse this year. It seems unfair. I will miss them at Worlds if they dont go.
Probably because the it was the results of Golden Spin that made the difference for the Olympic spot, which was under a point, and there was a judging scandal at Golden Spin and the suspended judge was marking all the Zhulin teams really high. The fed decided to keep the result for Olympics, which was great for H/K (and they did amazing), but when you combine that with the fact that S/D won the Nationals, I'm not surprised they made the decision that they did. Since next year Spain has two spots at Euros maybe they can just use that and we won't have any controversies.I dont understand Sarah & Kiriil not going to Worlds. Don’t now if it’s their new program, but on a video they are dancing to Harry Styles “Sign of the times”
savchenkoboss - Yes, I would also like to see both H/K and S/D at Worlds. It would be great if whoever of those two teams goes to Worlds next year could get into top 10 and earn two spots for the 2020 Worlds - a dificcult, but not impossible task. Although, to be honest, I am also hoping for a top 10 finish from Fournier-Beaudry/Sorensen or Soucisse/Firus (whoever of them gets that third Canadian spot). And then there are Muramoto/Reed who are also wonderful and improving. All in all, this promises to be an exciting fight for the last Worlds top 10 spot(s).
Weaver/Poje have specifically said they'll be back for Nationals and got new programs choreographed, and Chock/Bates just changed coaches, so it would be pretty shocking for either to retire before worlds. And who knows if it is even just the last Worlds top 10 spot. I have an idea which 9 you are thinking will finish in the first 9 places, but I wouldnt say all those spots are set in stone. Much crazier things have happened than 1 of those dropping. And also someone like Weaver & Poje or Chock & Bates (especialy W&P who arent even doing the grand prix) calling it a day before worlds is hardly far fetched either.
