Anatoly Samokhvalov's interview with Alina Zagitova for ria.ru

AZ: You learn more from the defeats, hence the next competition you know better what you should do. How to get ready mentally. Every athlete has a habit: some step on the ice with the right foot. I go through my successfull skates, recall what did I do, what did I eat. That's what the athlete is about - these small things.

AS: Was a competition in Canada hard because of the time difference?
AZ: It's the first time I was jetlagged. It's easier in Japan - feels as if I woke up very early when the sun was shining. The weather outside matters. It's just the way I am - if it's sunny outside am good, when it's grupmy it's hard for me to feel my body. Here in Canada I had to take sleeping pills - I was unable to fall asleep and felt like I'll fall asleep in the practice.

AS: Sleeping pills?
AZ: Yes. Think all the athletes do it to fight the jet lag. It's not always a good thing, so I try to fall asleep, because it effects you the next day. It was the only time I tried a sleeping pill.

AS: What were you thinking before the LP? The points between you and Rika Kihira, or something else?
AZ: There was that. For some reason I recalled the Worlds. My worst competition ever. I recalled being 2nd there as well and thinking in Italy overnight what do I have to do to become first. Am more experienced now. I set myself differently: what do I have to do just to skate my programme clean. When you think of beating someone it's wrong. Wrong to have such thoughts.

AS: But how do you learn it?
AZ: Just keep repeating the same sentence till you remember it. `Only a clean skate'. And nothing else.

AS: Is it true you were injured in Vancouver before the LP?
AZ: I already warmed up before the skate and decided to run a bit. I stumbled over an electricity cable. It just happened.

AS: Did you need a doctor's help?
AZ: Of course. Fortunately our doctor came with us and he did his job. The shot. The leg was a bit swallen.

AS: Have you considered withdrowing?
AZ: No. At that moment I thought of Hanyu, who was competing in Moscow with a much worse injury. I realized: you have to overcome hardships in order to be an athlet. Things don't always run smoothly.

AS: what were the conclusions after the GPF?
AZ: I have to polish both my programmes so I won't be skating as stiff as I have. I have a place to improve. My record, if I'm not mistaken, about 238points. I only got 226 here. So there is a lot to work on.

AS: Do you have to watch the rivals who land a 3A?
AZ: The most important lesson I learned in the GPf is don't count on someone failing. You have to skate great yourself.

AS: During the GPF you said don't blow the Russian nationals out of proportions.
AZ: Right.

AS: And yet you will be working towards it? It's not just the nationals anymore, people will have the Olympics in Korea in mind.
AZ: Really? I had no idea. Hope there won't be too many comments before the championship. I will take any comment after, but I love the silence before the buttle.

AS: Do you read what is being written about you in the social networks?
AZ: Not on purpose. When I enter the instagram to see some new photos and perhaps recepies I sometimes see some headlines. It's impossible not avoid.

AS: That's fame.
AZ: Sometimes it's a bother.

AS: Have you tried laughing it?
AZ: I did. But still sometimes it annoys, but I realize sometimes it's the only way. However, you will never be loved by everyone.

AS: I spoke to Medvedeva in France and she said that she is most annoyed to be called a traitor. What annoys you the most?
AZ: Am annoyed when I skate not as well as everyone wants me to and get the comments: ok, that's it, she is done. It's easy to comment from your couch. They have no idea what the athlete is like. It's the same as if I went to comment on some other sport not knowing a thing about it. They are not in my shoes, they are not athletes, they don't know how hard it is to be a sportswoman on such a level. I'll repeat: they are not in my shoes and they never will be. When I realize it I calm down.

AS: There are people who laugh at their haters and do even better, looking down on those couch commentators.
AZ: I try to laugh it off, because indeed it's sometimes funny.

AS: Sorry for the awkward question, but when I asked Medvedeva in France why you stopped commenting on each other she said so many nice things about you: that she haven't seen a person who was more hard working than you are. Why aren't you commenting on Medvedeva after the Olympics?
AZ: What do you want me to comment? We said it all during the Olympics. We said all the nice words. As for the rest, I don't want to.. It's our own business and I don't want the others to know it.

AS: But are you in touch?
AZ: No.

AS: It seemed perfect during the Olympics: you won, Medvedeva took silver. She cryed a little and then helped you during the press conference. It seemed like an amazing sportsmanship and a relationship of two great professionals. Why did it end there in Korea?
AZ: First of all she moved to Canada. We didn't communicate all that much in general, especially before the Olympics. It's hard to explain why. First because we were rivals. We were never best friends. Ever since she left she never wrote me, so I haven't either. I generally dislike writing. Or talking. I'm sometimes even too lazy to talk on the phone to my parents.

AS: Is a friendship even possible between the rivals?
AZ: I guess not. I don't know though. I was watching the Olympics in Rio where our rhythmic gymnasts Mamun and Kudriavtseva were competing. They seemed best friends. But I think they are rivals first of all. I'm in touch with Mamun, but I haven't asked her how were they communicating during the Olympics. I know they were separated. They used to share a room, but at the Olympics they were put in different rooms. But only they - Mamun and Kudriavtseva know what went on there.

AS: Who do you share the room with?
AZ: Either I live alone or with Tiffany Zahorski. I love sharing a room with her. She is such a sunny person, you can talk anything to her. That's a first thing. Second she is an adult, an experienced athlete who shares her experience with me. And it also matters that she is an ice dancer and am a single skater - we are not competing with each other, which calms.

AS: Which language do you talk to her?
AZ: Russian. Sometimes she says something in English and then I remind her `Tiff, you forgot I don't speak English?'. But she is kind of my English teacher. She is so calm. She behaves the way people usually do abroad. So when I am nervous she calms me down. It's great before the competitions.

AS: What question would you like to answer yourself?
AZ: About my dog. She is good. Are we done?

AS: Do you imagine what 2022 Olympics will be like?
AZ: A funny question. I don't even know what will be tomorrow. At the beginning of 2018 we didn't even know who will go to the Olympics.

AS: What do you mean? Zagitova, Medvedeva, the 3rd spot is open for grabbing.
AZ: I wasn't so sure about it till the Nationals. Think during the Nationals 2022 it will become clear who will compete at the Olympics. And don't forget about the injuries.

@taz'smum

@Tinami Amori , well, didn’t you claim how close friends they were? Alina now says that they never communicated that much in general and that they were never best friends. All the photos you posted to prove how close they are! It didn’t prove anything. They were not close. They stood next to each other and smiled for photos.

Just curious, how close is Trusova, Scherbakova and Kostornaya? Also BFF?

I wish people would quit bugging Alina and Evgenia about each other. They don't have to be friends. It's their own business who they're friends with.

Really what would you expect her to say. Irregardless of how she feels her training, her career is in the hands of a spitefull, lying child. If she says anything bad about Med she will be trashed by half of Russia and a good part of the rest of the world. If she says anything nice about Med Eteri will take it as a personal betrayal and make her pay. I am sure Med fully understands this. If either of them communicate in any way the media would be the last place they would say so.

No, I don't think so.

Wrong! Alina said they are not communicating now, after Med went to Canada. Prior to that they communicated every day, laughed, played, took selfies, shared clothing, and chose to sit together outside of official events.... and there are many IG videos which both girls taped themselves, but it's all been posted 100x already.

The one who claimed (and heavily advertised) the fact that "they are friends" was primarily Medvedeva, and Zagitova followed her comments. If you don't want to read their words, it is your problem... :D If you're now wondering if Medvedeva was being two-faced and tried to create a favorable image? well, that's up to you to decide..;)

Fotos are fotos, and then there are written documented words.... and out of dozens of interviews and videos, here are two..

Med: "I hear often what they write about us, that we are rivals, on the ice and off the ice. No, we are friends, we're girls. We're little girls. We (hang out) chat with each other about everything and anything. When we're on the ice, then it is real sport, we compete, at every competition, and it is a little battle. We need to do our best, not be nervous. When you step on ice, you're on your own. Yes, your friend is next to you, competing, but yes, you must compete".

Medvedeva: "On the ice you're alone. But Zagitova and I are friends"

Zag: Outside of the sport, Zhennya and I are friends. But when i step on the ice, i start feeling competitive, but not in a mean way. Once Zhennya lend me her dress.

If you have issues with "we're friends" part then and "no communication" now, then send Medvedeva a tweet and ask if she just PR-ing herself back then, or something changed after the olympics and why after using every photo opp to hug little 14/15 year old girl Zagitova who honestly thought they were friends for the last 3 years, Med did not send her even a short note after leaving for Canada... :p

Love this girl! :respec: and the fact that they are friends with Tiff! did not know this until the interview, but thrilled to no end! Tiff is cool, inventive, elegant and creative! :inavoid:

I'm very glad that Alina has a friend in Tiffany. As the girls are all so young, train together and then also go to school at Sambo 70, I think it's good for her to have a friend that is outside that world.

At this precise point in time, Zagitova's closest Russian threat is probably Tuktamysheva, so I'm not sure why the media is still fixated on this Medvedeva/Zagitova thing. Perhaps not enough effort to research and consider proper questions.

I just wish the interviews with Zagitova weren't so confrontational. You know, if the journalists had a few fun questions at the start about her dog and her hobbies, then maybe it would break the ice and relax the situation for a better interview. They all drill her (and Medvedeva) like she's taking a test. No wonder Alina is like ‘are we done?’ towards the end.

Have you noticed that Louis Theroux always gets his interviewees to do things like show him around their house etc before they start talking? It’s to relax the subject and get them ready to open up.

Zagitova is really aggressive in this interview.
I never believed that Medvedeva and Zagitova are best friends, not even friends. This doesn't mean that they didn't have a respectful relationship.

Ohh, please, Zagitova is nothing but naive... she knew how things are in reality. She may look innocent and shy but I bet that she isn't at all like this. Appearences are deceptive.

Actually she was until recently, very innocent and naive, and that's why in the recent interview she said how depressed she is partially because "those who she thought were her friends turned out not to be"... But i am sure she is learning now how not to be naive and how manipulative people can be, after all she had a good "friend" to learn from...;)

I don't know what you read about Zagitova, but she always stated that she doesn't trust people. As I said, I doubt she is or was ever a naive person.

It's likely that the relationship between Zagitova and Medvedeva is much like that between many work colleagues. Everyone is civil, socialises at work functions (and often quite a lot) but when the work association ends, everyone goes their own ways. I just don't know why it's such a big deal to argue about. I'm sure we have all had work colleagues with whom we talked everyday, had Friday drinks with etc but moved on after changing jobs - particularly if you moved abroad.

It's also part of growing up that we learn about different kinds of relationships, including working relationships with colleagues.

It's really unfortunate that this kind of rivalry is being stoked. There was something great about the 'may the best man win' attitude there has been in men's skating over the past quad where everyone realised that all the top skaters were great talents and it just came down to what happened on the ice that day and the winner could be any of Hanyu, Fernandez, Chen, Uno etc and it didn't mean that one was bad if they didn't win that particular day.

Alina did not "always said" that she does not trust people, she was never asked before because that was never an issue until recently... if you get the drift.

What i do remember "always" reading about Zagitova and "from Zagitova" is her talking about skating, trying harder, working with Eteri and her pets.... and of course, feeling restrained to show her happiness about wining Olympic Gold because she did not want to hurt Medvedeva's feelings...
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DWsegQcVQAAnetC.jpg

.. and then quietly waiting in the corner, alone like an orphan, while the whole team had to deal with Medvedeva's entitlement tantrums..

Yeah, the "human games" are new to her... :D at it is quite obvious, but she is learning.

@Tinami Amori I trust that your loyalty to Zagitova will remain strong when she likely finds herself in the same situation as Medvedeva did when the junior girls move up with quads. Or will we be dropping Zagitova like a hot stone the moment she is beaten by Trusova etc?

Actually, she said in this interview that they did not communicate that much, especially before the Olympics. So she doesn’t talk only about now, she talks about before the Olympics. And posting hundreds of other links doesn’t change that your version of events is different than hers.

ITA! It also makes a lot of sense for two athletes who train together are going to try their best to get along. There was a lot of similar coverage during the last decade or so of COI -- all these competitive rivals were supposedly "best friends" when they were touring together (especially during the "post whack boom" when the tour lasted several months), but when the touring ended, the relationship changed.

I appreciate the honest interview from Alina. To me, the interview didn't seem all serious. I guess the tone can be hard to read. I believe what Alina is saying. Most skaters(or any other athletes in an individual sport) who are competitive at an elite level aren't really friends even though they have to act that way in front of the general public. It is hard to be competitive and friends. This isn't just Alina. I have heard interviews from various women tennis players over the years too (as an example of a different sport) who always say how lonely it is at the top. She brings up the point of Tiffany being someone who she can talk to freely. There is no threat there. As an elite athlete, you have to devote your life selfishly to your sport which means there is little or no time for friends.:(
Alina has accomplished quite a bit at a young age. She really doesn't have any reason to continue other than her love for skating. I wish her well.
Thanks for the interview TAHbKA.

Eteri herself said Medvedeva and Zagitova friends and it was Medvedeva who felt uncomfortable with the rivalry. Made it sound Medvedeva put value in friendship but Zagitova the competitive nature. Both Eteri and Zagitova are smart with media. Probably Medvedeva also. Medvedeva seems more private.

Yeah, the "human games" are new to her... :D at it is quite obvious, but she is learning.
Zagitova grew up in a competitive environment. I doubt such "games" are new to her.
