I loved Tarasova and Morozov but Putin and Tutberidze doping scandal has ruined my fandom.
I’m sorry that those things ruined your fandom.

All I know is their skating still brings me joy (one of the few things in this world that does) and I will continue to watch. They can’t help where they were born and they sort of only ended up at Sambo 70 because they had a hard time getting ice time to practice last season and that could not happen again in an Olympic year. Also… when Putin first ended up president after Yeltsin suddenly resigned in 1999, Evgenia had turned 5 less than two weeks earlier and Vladimir only 7 a couple of months before.

There were plenty of times I hoped the world wasn’t judging my values by the actions of the president (the Bush and Trump years, so I try not to judge individual civilians by who the leader is, especially when it’s a dictator who first got power when said individuals were young kids.

I’m not trying to change your mind, but just putting it out there as another way to look at if and only if you want to.

That would mean a 4th citizenship for Tiff 😂
She is also entitled to an Irish citizenship via her Irish grandma.
Truly a citizen of the World 🌎
I have three passports without even needing skating as an excuse. The Irish Consulate in Sydney were very helpful with one of those if Tiff wants to pursue that avenue.

Glad to know Tiff is safe - she has managed to miss the worst of the rain as today was a glorious sunny day for the first time in about 3 weeks (at least in NSW - can't comment on any other state).

Also by the logic in this thread, nobody should have watched skating in the 80s when the Soviet Union and the GDR competed, but I don't really see anybody having cancelled their skating fandom back then cause Kati Witt competed in the Olympics :shuffle: The state systems of Soviet Union and GDR were certainly just as bad as Putins Russia. Which was also not Kati Witts or Bestemianova & Bukins fault.

No one has cancelled China’s skaters either. China also does not great things, has a state-run sports system, and although I can’t recall any doping cases, they have been caught falsifying ages in gymnastics (with the aside there are suspicions Sui and Han’s birthdays were fudged early in their career so they would be under or over age limits as needed.)

The Channel One Cup is a Russian domestic cheesefest, not an isu international competition or US domestic qualifying competition. I find know what it would be expected for US-based Peacock to carry it.

Peacock wouldn’t carry Channel One Cup but I’m 99.99% sure that anyone can watch for “free” via YouTube. Just search первый канал . Juggling that with Worlds could be interesting.

Russian skaters are banned from international competition, this is different from anything that has happened before. This has nothing to do with the state sponsored skating system, nor with the doping controversy at the Olympics. It is part of a worldwide effort to isolate Russia in an attempt to impose costs on the Putin regime that will force it to stop its war in Ukraine.

It seems to me that it circumvents this to access Russian domestic competitions including "cheesefests" and shows IMO, as an international audience.

I'm sure there's a good argument why it doesn't make any difference to watch Russian skaters in domestic events but there are also arguments why this or that is just a small thing that doesn't make a difference in regards to all sorts of sanctions.

It isn't about the skaters themselves. It is about a situation where the world is trying to isolate Russia to pressure it to end its war in Ukraine. Its easy to say well what difference does a few skating fans accessing Russian domestic skating events have to do with that, but where do you draw the line?

The RSF has deliberately scheduled this cheesefest at the same time as Worlds to get attention, and to make a point. Which is that they’re going to do what they want … regardless of the larger interests of the sport or anyone else in it. It’s an FU to the ISU and the other feds. And that sounds … kind of like Putin in Ukraine, doesn’t it? taking over a country because he wants to, and screw everyone else and what they want. Coincidental? I think not. 🙄

Everyone can make their own choice, but I’ve got no interest in supporting either of the key groups that would benefit from me watching this cheesefest.

It’s unfortunate, but Russian athletes are competing for a federation and a leader that, it’s becoming evident, are willing to do just about anything to advance their own interests (perhaps preferably at the expense of everyone else’s).

This is about what is happening now, in the present moment. Actions we need to take NOW to help bring the end of death and destruction in Ukraine. I am personally canceling China too because of its shocking support of the Russian invasion/war. I expected it to at least condemn the invasion, which it has refused to do. China has a prominent “journalist” embedded with the Russian troops and the Chinese population is being fed the same propaganda of the Russians. Thomas Friedland has an excellent column in the NYT about how China is the one power that could stop the war. But of course it won’t because it has similar designs on taking Taiwan.

No censorship, please. It’s great that anyone who wishes to see the Russian competitions can do so. Otherwise, why tout our democratic ways?

I’ll try to watch both Worlds and the Russian event. It will be very interesting to see the points of the Russians in Pairs and Womens events vs points achieved by Worlds medalists. We will see with our own eyes and fairly assign points - at least for TES - rather than go with points given by the Russian panels (inflation).

What does that have to do with them or any of the athletes. They worked their butts off for their achievements, and to be honest, all of these athletes owe their ability to that state sponsored system of Russia. That's where all of that high quality comes from.

Well, looks like watching the Channel One Cup on YT is out of the question now since YT just announced the following:

"Our Community Guidelines prohibit content denying, minimizing or trivializing well-documented violent events, and we remove content about Russia's invasion in Ukraine that violates this policy.

In line with that, effective immediately, we are also blocking YouTube channels associated with Russian state-funded media, globally."

Love the censorship.

Yup, censorship.

No, sanctions.
No, it has nothing to do with sanctions and everything to do with presenting one viewpoint. Because heaven forbid people develop a view that is opposite with the one view pushed by the Democrats/United States. Blocking a channel entirely, including its entertainment, is right in line with that other regimes do to control thought. Maybe they will block all Russian sports and maybe even Chinese, and present a narrative that pretends they never existed.

A private company decides not to platform misinformation and propaganda and it's Muh Censorsh1ps! every time.
People always love to cite that they are "private companies". If you only knew how much cooperation goes on between law enforcement and the Federal government with "private companies" like 23 & Me, in which most of the DNA samples are willingly given by customers for entertainment purposes.

Now Facebook and Twitter just pick up from where the NSA left off, and they can influence thought as well.

I know there are political threads so I'm not going to go more into this.

I support the Russian athletes and their livelihood.

RusFed's site is slow to load these days - March 11:

The First Channel Cup will be held on March 25-27 in Saransk on the ice "Saransk Arena". As part of the competition, a jumping festival and a team tournament are planned, where two teams will compete for prizes.

Competition schedule:
March 25
jumping festival
March 26 short programs
March 27 free programs

Jump festival starts at 18.00, team competitions at 17.00.

More details about the rules of the competition and the lineups will be announced later. Not all athletes declared for participation in the jumping festival will be included in the teams.

I just tried to access this channel and I was told it was forbidden by my carrier.
When I posted the link, it worked. Now it's not working with firefox (same response as yours). Still working with Chrome. I guess there will be quite some back and forth regarding the accessibility of Russian websites. Sometimes not even VPN works.

The ISU can really screw them and say that the competition is non-sanctioned and all the athletes who participate will lose eligibility for ISU events.

you can watch here https://www.1tv.com/live. You can get all the different views on the world, as much as you like and as long as you like to watch. So no censorship, just one channel of distribution is shut down.
This is what I get with Chrome

403 - Forbidden . That’s an error.

Client does not have access rights to the content so server is rejecting to give proper response. That’s all we know.

It's a matter of personal choice for the potential viewer. I am sure some people would have watched video streams of domestic German competitions in the late 1930's or Zola Budd's races in South Africa in the early 1980's had that been possible.

This stuff just got very very real.

But as I said before, the Russians will play amongst themselves and award each other platinum medals and such....etc, etc etc. On to more pressing news next Thursday is the Last Episode of Flip or Flop on HGTV. I will miss Christina, sigh.
