Question About Cats

After decades with dogs Boo is my first cat. Today she appears to be sneezing and coughing. What has been your experience with colds or upper respiratory infections in cats? I’m worried because it is so close to days when help might not be available.

Could be a number of things. Get her to your vet. Cats have tiny bodies and an infection can spread within hours. The sooner she is looked at, the better. You won't be sorry.

It might be a mild URI - does Boo go outside? But I agree since it’s your first cat and her first illness, go to the vet.

I would get Boo to the vet. Don't want to mess with respiratory infections.

Is the picture in your profile Boo? Or is that another kitty?

Funny how all the cat lovers have their cats in their profile 😺

Yeah, my experience is that when a cat gets sick enough for me to notice, they can get worse really fast so it's better to take them in to the vet as soon as possible after I realize one is sick. My experience with respiratory infections is that a lot of those infections get better with simple antibiotics, but still, I need the medication. (At least with a cough. Sneezes, of course, aren't always a sign of an infection).

That is Boo. They will work her in this afternoon. She does seem to be feeling better today: She ate and asked for scritches. Also, DUH, I had the carpet cleaned on Monday. It said the products are pet friendly but possibly she had a reaction.

Glad she is feeling better.

Boo and I had some hits and misses at the vet. On the third visit they noticed something abnormal in her mouth and did a biopsy. It is cancer. They had to remove the teeth on one side of her mouth. They thought she might have weeks. It’s been a few months. We just take it day by day. She is such a sweet, little cat. There ought to be a law when comes to cancer in children or animals.

I'm so sorry to hear this, @Cachoo . My first cat was a stray that died from cancer very young. It's so hard to lose any loved animal companion but especially when they really haven't had a chance for s long life of love. But the garden kitty lived to 21. At least you will be there to make sure Boo doesn't suffer.

That stinks. I'm glad you at least know what it is. I took my cat to the vet a number of times, had her go through imaging and meds for the wrong condition, and she was at the vet when she died. The vet didn't diagnose her with cancer until after she died. I would have done things very differently if I had known. After that, I was incredibly careful when researching vets for my other cat.

I’m so sorry. I hope she will be able to be comfortable with you for a while yet. It’s never easy, and they never know exactly what the course of the disease will be. I had a 15-year-old cat who developed a tumor in his sinus cavity. He lived about a month after the diagnosis; the vet was amazed, only thought he’d live a week or two. He was not in a huge amount of pain, but I could tell when it was time. I’m sure Boo will let you know too, and she will be comforted by your presence.

Really sorry to hear this @Cachoo. My first cat as an adult was also named Boo. He was stray and an awesome kitty. He died of kidney disease when he was only 11 but I treasured the last months we had with him. He remained a loving feline companion to the end. I’m sure your Boo knows that you’ve been a wonderful human to her and have given her much love. Take care.
