Preference: Ivanova's 1984 Olympic SP or Sotnikova 2014 SP

Ivanova

Sotnikova

Interesting that the commentators called Ivanova's camel-change-camel for what it was - a simplified version of the classic attitude. Well, they were less direct...

Preferred Sotnikova, but Ivanova is the better skater overall.

I think Peggy and Uncle Dick were completely wrong about Ivanova's camel spin. It was lovely, but it was done with cool disinterest, which was totally opposite of how Peggy and Uncle Dick skated. Ivanova skated for herself while they skated for the audience. I don't think Ivanova was ever interested in being a "show skater".

Ivanova's straight line step sequence was very difficult.

I agree her straight line steps were difficult. They looked like the 2006 season steps, not 1984.

Nobody can redesign a beautiful dress to be ugly, go out on the ice like she doesn't care and has better thoughts than you, and skate the best short program of her career as if it does not matter like Kira Ivanova.

😂 I knew I always loved Ivanova! She's just SO voidy 😍

Ivanova's 1984 SP is actually one of my all time favorites. The footwork sequence is divine :swoon: Thanks for putting this program into conversation!

ETA I love, love her opening positions and her triple toe/double loop is so enormous it's easy to imagine her being capable of adding an extra rotation onto BOTH passes if she skated in this era.

Kira did in fact attempt 3Lp at 1984 Worlds.

She attempted it in pretty much every event in her career!

My wording with ambiguous - I meant that she couldn't tacked on a triple loop instead of a double. Or a quad toe instead of a triple - her other triples didn't have the amplitude of her toe loop, but that jump usually huge.

I always had a soft spot for Kira Ivanova, but I voted Sotnikova, who is by far a better athlete with much better flow across the ice, and who really sold the hell out of her programs.

Still, Kira skated well in 1984 and 1985. She got her figures really good, to where she was almost always the leader after compulsories in every competition. I don't know what happened to her at the 1988 Olympics. Kira was still leading after figures, but looked totally defeated in the short and free programs. She didn't rotate even one triple and landed forward on two feet. Oddly enough, she tried a 3Lz in her free (along with a 3T), but was nowhere near actually doing it. No attempt at a 3Sal or Loop.

I think it's awful that she was murdered. Stabbed to death, I believe.

The judging of the top 3 women in the Sarajevo SP was correct. Kira Ivanova's abilities were under-appreciated and she's one of those skaters when she was at her peak, was interesting to watch, especially if you go back and watch her w/o Dick & Peggy's commentary.

One smalll comments - Zayak wuz robbed! I would have had her in 4th in the Sarajevo, close to 3rd

In that era overall results could be impacted by Anna Kondrashova, who was objectively dreadful at compulsory figures but could be wedged into the 3rd position in the SP and/or LP at any given time to make a championship or break a championship.

I recently rewatched 1987 Worlds and was struck by how much better the Soviet ladies were than I remembered. Lack of smiles and harsh commentary can really shape a view of someone.

Still prefer the 2014 Sotnikova SP, though. It has aged extremely well. Great choreo by Peter T.

Wow, Ivanova looked so good in 1984. Does anyone have insight into why she looked so meh in 87/88?

Wear and tear!

In the Soviet Union and East Germany, life was so much better as an athlete that it was better to just keep being an athlete as long as possible. Most ladies in "the West" would have retired to show skating about 17-22 years old.

In 1988, Kira would have been about 25 years old and Katarina was 23 years old. By contrast, Debbie Thomas and Caryn Kadavy were about 21 years old while Jill Trenary was 19 years old.

Really, Kira should have peaked in 1984, and she did.
